- ItemIndices of job stress and job satisfaction among academic librarians in selected federal universities in South West Nigeria(2013) Ogunlana E Ka; Okunlaya R O Ab ,; Ajani F Oc; Okunoye Td; Oshinaike A OeLibrarians around the world, like other professionals, experience stress caused by different factors.. The study examined the relationship between job stress and job satisfaction among a population of 87 librarians. Descriptive survey research method was used. Job stress levels were assessed using the Job Stress Scale (JSS) adapted from Stress Indicators Scale (2007) and job satisfaction levels were measured using the Job Satisfaction Questionnaire of Linz, (2002) and graded by Likert scale with degree of agreement range between low to high (1-5). This research was designed for the librarians employed in the libraries in South West Nigeria. Data were collected through the questionnaire designed and were subjected to statistical analysis using simple percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test statistics and Scheffe post-hoc analysis. The study revealed that the mean scores for satisfaction were low for workplace characteristics. Female librarians had significantly lower job satisfaction (mean job satisfaction score difference = 12.2; 50.5%, p>0.05), as compared to their male counterparts (mean job satisfaction score difference 21.0: 49.5%, p<0.05); and a positive correlation was found between job satisfaction and librarians’ job stress (r = 0.69, α < 0.05). The findings also revealed that majority of the librarians had low job satisfaction level and higher levels of job stress. These results have implications for addressing job stress and job satisfaction in academic libraries.
- ItemKnowledge and Use of Electronic Information Resources by Academics in Colleges of Animal Production, Animal Health, and Veterinary Medicine in Nigeria(2013-12) Oyintola Isiaka Amusa; Abdusalaam A. Salman; Florence Olabisi AjaniAbstract This study adopted survey method to investigate the knowledge and use of electronic information resources (EIR) among the academic staff in animal health, animal production, and veterinary medicine in Nigeria. These areas of knowledge are interwoven as they all deal with animal reproduction and wellbeing. Two hundred and seventy-seven (277) lecturers responded to the questionnaire from four universities, FUNAAB, UI, UNILORIN, and OOU. Analysis of data revealed that the lecturers are quite knowledgeable of electronic resources and they use them for teaching, research and professional purposes; the respondents do not know the electronic resources subscribed to by their libraries among those they know and use; and their effective use of the resources is hampered by inadequate skill and knowledge of e-resources, power fluctuation, and slow internet access among others. The study in conclusion recommended adequate publicity for the library based e-resources; periodic training and retraining of users; regular subscription and updating of e-resources; provision of alternative power sources and; improvement in bandwidth subscriptions.

- ItemIssues and Trends in the Provision of Public Library Services in Nigeria: A Literature Survey(Journal of Balkan Libraries Union, 2014) Abdulsalam Abiodun Salman; B. Janneke Mostert; Tinashe MugwisiThe philosophy, orientation and nature of public library are routed in the responsibility of disseminating diverse and current information services to the members of its community. Waller and Mcshare (2008) posit two major challenges in the provision and use of public library services which are; lack of obtaining a thorough understanding of the nature of the environment which bothers majorly on information provision and use; and the development of policy frameworks that clarifies institutions goals and brings coherence to diverse and sometimes conflicting policy demands. This paper looks at issues and trends concerning some of the challenges bedeviling the provision and utilisation of public library services in Nigeria such as in-appropriate policies, lack of sufficient professionals, inadequate facilities and services and lack of awareness and proper understanding of the concept of public library services which led to non-use of the available services by potential users. Yield shift theory of satisfaction phenomena was used to explain the satisfaction phenomenon of public library services by users. Identified challenges were discussed and recommendations made towards developing a framework for improved public library services in Nigeria.

- ItemThe governance and management of public library services in Nigeria(Emerald Insight, 2018) Janneke Mostert; Abdulsalam A. SalmanPurpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the managerial and governance issues that impact on service delivery in public libraries in Nigeria. Within many countries this seems to be a challenge often resulting in an ineffective service delivery resulting in underutilisation thereof. This study was conducted among administrators and managers of public libraries in Nigeria to establish the current status quo concerning governance and management issues impacting on service delivery. Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative study using interviews was used to illicit data from three permanent secretaries, six public library directors, and six heads of rural community libraries, purposively selected for the study. Findings – The findings show that variables such as relevant academic qualifications, years of experience, and designation of the administrators and managers of public libraries affect service delivery. A huge dependency on government bodies for decision making and funding was established. Impediments to good management of the libraries were found to be inadequate funding; lack of involvement of stakeholders in public library administration; and inappropriate public library legislation. Practical implications – The study recommends the promulgation of a public library-specific act in order to regulate the administration and management of this public unit, involve stakeholders in public library administration, as well as the provision of alternative forms of funding in order to alleviate the dependence on governmental budgets. Originality/value – With very little research available on these issues in Nigeria, this paper will create awareness among all stakeholders of specific governance and managerial issues impacting on effective service delivery to public library users so that it can be addressed.
