- ItemAcademic library services during and after the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences, University of Ilorin, 2022) Ajani, Florence Olabisi; Nallah, Bilqees JumaiAcademic libraries are considered the information centre and backbone of the institution to which they are attached. They acquire and organize information materials and services to support the teaching, learning and research objectives of the institution. In the past, academic libraries are usually considered as the physical structure that house the print books, journals, theses/dissertations, reference materials etc. but now this has changed, with the advancements in ICT tools, we are now in the era of electronic materials/resources. To cope with the challenges of COVID 19 pandemic that has emphasized the need for a more online learning platforms to keep staff and library users safe, academic libraries will need to provide online information resources and services to suit the present realities. Academic libraries will have to redefine their services to adequately provide information resources and services to support the objectives of the parent institution. This paper suggests strategies and services that academic libraries can adopt to cope with the changes in learning environment and sustain their services post COVID-19 era.
- ItemAccess to and use of public library services in Nigeria(http://sajlis.journals.ac.za doi:10.7553/83-1-1639, 2017) Abdulsalam Abiodun Salman1; Tinashe Mugwisi; Bertha Jantine MostertThe study investigated the factors hampering access to and use of public library (urban and rural) services in Nigeria. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods were employed through the administration of a questionnaire to users in both urban and rural public libraries in Nigeria and conducting interviews with the public librarians. The objectives of the study centred on identifying awareness and utilisation of library services, including utilisation patterns. The study also sought to investigate levels of satisfaction among users as well as make recommendations for improved service delivery. The population was the registered public library user group from which 394 users were randomly sampled from twelve purposively selected libraries – two from each of the six regions. The respondents were mainly an educated male user group representing a wide variety of occupations. Awareness of services was restricted to a few services, and accessibility to the major library services was found to be a challenge to many. Utilisation patterns indicated infrequent use of only a few services, and very low satisfaction with what is being offered. Challenges identified included unawareness of services, too few copies of materials and lack of information literacy skills. Recommendations included the enhancement of community participation in decision-making concerning services, that relevant and enough materials be supplied, and that effective marketing be employed to improve access and to promote services among users and potential users.
- ItemADOPTION OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TO IMPROVE LIBRARY ADOPTION OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TO IMPROVE LIBRARY SERVICE DELIVERY IN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES IN KWARA STATE, SERVICE DELIVERY IN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES IN KWARA STATE, NIGERIA NIGERIA(DigitalCommons@University of Nebraska - Lincoln, 2023) Abdrahman .A. MOUSTAPHA (CLN/NLA) & Ibrahim .O. YUSUF (CLN/NLA)Due to the increasing presence of artificial intelligence (AI) in developed countries, this paper examines the adoption of AI for effective library services in academic libraries in Nigeria. The paper defines artificial intelligence while chronicling its history. He also identified the advantages of adopting artificial intelligence in academic libraries, which include ease of use, endless functionality, and the ability to perform complex work, among others, and the challenges faced by library management towards adopting artificial intelligence, which include financial uncertainty, job loss, and technological defects, among others. The paper concluded that adoption of AI in academic libraries sets a new level of efficient and effective library service delivery, but adoption in developing countries such as Nigeria is low due to some identified challenges. The paper recommended that government and library management should come together to suggest the way forward for academic libraries in terms of meeting the latest standard for the use of AI in libraries; library staff must undergo training and retraining in the use of artificial intelligence in providing library services, among other things.

It adopted the survey research design with four objectives to guide the study. The population of the study comprises 27 librarians of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) Library. The data for the study was collected using the structure questionnaire and the census sampling technique was used since all the study population were used. The instrument yielded a 100% response rate. Data collected were analysed using the descriptive statistics which showed the frequency counts, mean scores and standard deviations, while the corresponding hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance with the chi-square inferential method. The findings revealed that library services necessary for automation in academic libraries by librarians include acquisition, circulation, cataloguing and classification, etc. It also showed that the facilities needed for automation of academic library services are computers, printers, scanners, effective internet services, etc. The study further revealed that the status of automation of academic library services in the academic library under study is not effective. The study showed the problems of automation of academic library services in Abia State to include inadequate funding of academic libraries, inadequate ICT skills of librarians, por internet access, etc. However, the test of hypothesis revealed that there is a relationship between automation and effectiveness of library services in academic libraries by librarians in Abia State. Consequently, the study conclusively recommends, among other things, that management of academic libraries should provide adequate funding to academic libraries to enable plan and execute effective automation of library services in academic libraries.
- ItemARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ADOPTION AND UTILIZATION BY LIBRARIANS IN UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES IN KWARA STATE, NIGERIA(DigitalCommons@University of Nebraska - Lincoln, 2023) Abdrahman .A. MOUSTAPHA (CLN/NLA) & Ibrahim .O. YUSUF (CLN/NLA)The study investigated how librarians working in various university libraries in Kwara State, Nigeria, adopt and use artificial intelligence. The study raised four research goals as well as four research questions. A descriptive survey method and random sampling techniques with 450 randomly selected librarians from Kwara State Universities, Nigeria, were used for the research. Five research assistants were trained on how to contact respondents and secure their consent before distributing the structured questionnaire designed by the researcher, who assisted in the tool distribution process. The researcher was able to retrieve 410 copies of the 450 questionnaires that were given to the respondents. However, the rate of return was 91%, which is a respectable amount. A self-designed questionnaire was used to elicit responses from the respondents, and a simple percentage was adapted for data analysis. The results showed that there was little adoption of AI in university libraries in Kwara State, Nigeria. The research also reveals that security scanning devices at the entrances and exits of university libraries are the most prevalent AI systems, while other AI systems such as bots, chatbots, face recognition, touch recognition, RFID technologies, humans, AI classification tools, machine-readable catalogs, and not smart AI features are still missing from the Kwara State University libraries. A self-designed questionnaire was used to elicit responses from the respondents, and a simple percentage ratio was adapted for data analysis. The findings revealed that AI has received minimal attention in university libraries in Kwara State, Nigeria. According to the study, the most common AIs are security scanning equipment at university library entrances and exits, followed by robotics, chatbots, face recognition, and touch recognition. RFID technologies, humanoids, AI classification tools, machine-readable catalogs, and AI smart features are still lacking in Kwara State's university libraries. The results of this study also indicate that librarians in a university library are aware of the many ways in which artificial intelligence can be applied to provide services. The results of the study indicate that obstacles to adoption include significant disruption caused by artificial intelligence in traditional library services, a lack of skills and a need for training prior to adoption, irregular power supply, and a lack of adequate infrastructure for adoption, among other problems. The study recommended the need to organize training for librarians to enhance their skills in using artificial intelligence to provide services, and the university administration and libraries should commit and provide the necessary support for the adoption of artificial intelligence by providing the necessary infrastructure to ensure its rapid implementation.

- ItemAWARENESS AND UTILISATION OF REFERENCE MATERIALS AND SERVICES AMONG UNDERGRADUATES IN PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES IN SOUTH-WEST, NIGERIA(2021) DR. AJANI, FLORENCE OLABISI; BURAIMO, OLAYINKA; DR. ADEGBAYE, SARAH IRHERHIMENA; OLUSANYA, OLUFEMI FRANCISA functional reference section with relevant information resources provision remains an asset to the library and its parent institution. Inspite of numerous benefits associated with reference materials and services, many academic libraries in South-west Nigeria still lack functional reference sections. Even in universities with good reference section and services, majority of the undergraduates are not aware of the existence of such units and services while very many cannot fully exploit the reference sources to fulfil their information needs. This study thus examined the level of awareness and utilization of reference materials and services among undergraduates in four public universities in South-west, Nigeria. The descriptive research design of ex-post-factor type was used. A sample of 400 out of 20,698 registered undergraduate library users in the selected universities constituted the respondents for the study. A validated questionnaire with Cronbach-Alpha 0.89 was used for data collection. Out of 400 copies of questionnaire administered, only 284 copies were found usable, which gave 71.0% rate of return. Data collected were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The study revealed that dictionaries, bibliographies, handbook, and encyclopedia were the most available reference materials. Studies also revealed high level of awareness and utilization of reference materials and services among the undergraduates. More so, it was discovered that lack of access to Awareness and Utilization of Reference Materials and Services Among Undergraduates in Public internet facility within the library, obsolete reference materials among others were factors hindering the utilization of reference materials and services. Findings further indicated that awareness of reference materials and services relatively and significantly influence utilization of reference materials and services among undergraduates. It is therefore recommended amongst others that universities library should concentrate more on purchase of reference materials such as index, abstract, handbook, encyclopaedia, dictionaries and lay more emphasis on services like Library instructions and literature search. University libraries should also make provision for 24- hour Internet facilities free for undergraduates amongst others

- ItemBioclimatic Modeling of Current Geographic Distribution and Future Range Shifts of Selected Edible Mushrooms in Nigeria(Faculty of Life Sciences FUDMA, 2024-03) Tiamiyu, B.B.; Lateef, A. A.; Ajadi, I.; Adeyemi, S. B.; Owolabi, P.O.; Sagaya, A.; AbdulSalam, M.; AbdulKareem; K. A.; Mustapha, O. T.Mushrooms, as part of the fungal kingdom, are essential components in nutrient cycling and carbon retention in terrestrial ecosystems. Monitoring the impact of climate change on fungi in their natural habitat is difficult because most species reside below the soil surface. As a result of a few reported occurrence records in Nigeria, we model the species distribution of two edible mushrooms, namely, Pleurotus ostreatusand Macrolepiota procera, using MaxEnt to predict the potential future range shifts under different climate change scenarios. In this study,we have calculated high model performances based on the Area underCurve (AUC) values generated (0.778-0.873). Using this modeling approach, the two species were predicted to have an expansion of their localized fundamental niches, pointing to the influence of precipitation as an important macroclimatic predictor. Highly suitable habitats for the two species were discovered primarily in Southern Nigeria, with less habitat suitability in the North-centralZone in 2050. The predicted models in this study do not tell missing geographical information, which could be achieved through citizen science for occurrence records and biodiversity conservation. However, they may be used to explore potentialities, such as understanding the possible distribution patterns of the two mushroom species in Nigeria. This can serve as a useful baseline to enhance the utilization and conservation efforts of these macrofungi as a result of climate change, habitat loss, and rapid urbanization
