- ItemLEAD ASSESSMENT IN DOMESTIC WATER SOURCES IN KWARA STATE, NIGERIA(African Journal of Geographical Sciences (AJGS), 2025-05-21) 1Mohammed SThe rate of Water contamination by lead in sub–Saharan Africa is at an alarming rate, and it is a source of concern for the Environmental managers especially in Nigeria. Physiochemical parameters in water samples from tap water, well water, and river water in Malete were assessed. Water samples were collected over two weeks, and parameters such as turbidity, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), pH, and lead (Pb) concentrations were measured using standard procedures. The results were then compared with World Health Organization (WHO) standards for drinking water. The major findings revealed that the Zinc and lead concentrations in Malete's water sources significantly exceeded WHO's permissible limits of 0.01 mg/L, with the highest lead levels detected in the Malete River (0.085 mg/L). Other physiochemical parameters, including TDS, COD, and BOD, indicated varying degrees of water quality issues, with particularly high organic pollution levels in the river water. These findings suggest that the water contamination originated from a combination of aging infrastructure, such as decayed lead pipes, and dumping of refuse. There is urgent need to take measures to curb this from escalating, youth occupy large space in to future generation, save guarding their health is key to national development. Replacing corroded lead pipes and alternative source of water will help reduce over dependent on one source of water.
- ItemThe Social Behaviour and Perceived Impact of Headphone Use across Selected Tertiary Institutions in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria(2025-05-13) Salami, O. O.1*, Sani M.1, Adiama Y. B.,2 & Mohammed Y.2Background: Noise is regarded as sound generated as a byproduct of artificial or natural activities introduced directly or indirectly into the environment, usually at levels above 80 dB. Daily exposure to noise in many occupations may impair hearing, reduce efficiency, or both. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the headphone usage habits among adolescents in selected tertiary institutions in Ilorin and to examine adolescents' perceptions regarding the impact of headphone use on their hearing health. Methodology: Data were collected from respondents across three universities in Kwara State using a descriptive survey research approach through a structured questionnaire to gather data from the students. The sample was drawn randomly in three key zones of the institutions – the Administration building area, the university bus park and the University library. Background sound levels in these areas were also recorded. The collected data were analysed using descriptive statistics using SPSS 20, and the results were presented in frequencies and percentages to highlight trends across the study variables. Result: The findings reveal that most respondents (43.5%) prefer listening to music at medium volumes, with fun and relaxation (74.5%) being the primary motivations for headphone use. However, a significant portion experiences adverse effects such as ear soreness, ringing in the ears, and distraction (62.0%). Despite these issues, many respondents lack concern about potential hearing loss, highlighting a gap in awareness about the risks of excessive sound exposure. Additionally, the study finds that respondents often use headphones as part of their daily routine, with 43% occasionally removing their headphones to engage in social interactions. Conclusion and recommendations: Several factors influence adolescents in these universities. Their behaviour, perceived health implications, and experiences differ based on the duration and volume of exposure and background noise levels. The study recommended developing guidelines to promote mindful headphone use in shared spaces, considering the growing incidence among young persons. Parents, educators, and healthcare professionals should play active roles in raising awareness about safe listening habits.
- ItemPRINCIPALS’ PERCEPTION OF GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING SERVICES IN KWARA STATE SECONDARY SCHOOLS, NIGERIA: IMPLICATION FOR STAKEHOLDERS(Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, 2021-03-29) Yusuf Suleiman1 , Famolu Florence Bosede2 , Adekola Kamil Lasisi3 , Mustapha Adam Ishola4Students are often faced with numerous challenges, which can bring on stress, anxiety, depression or relationship problems with those around them. Because of the foregoing, this study examined the principals’ perception of guidance and counselling in secondary schools. The study population consist of all principals in secondary schools in Kwara State, Nigeria. Non-probability sampling techniques (stratified, purposive and convenience) were employed to select 20 principals to participate in the study. An instrument titled “Interview Guide on Guidance and Counselling Services (IGGCS)” was used to collect relevant data from the principals while secondary data were obtained from the counselling department of the schools. Nvivo software (version 10) was used to analyse the data collected. The findings of the study revealed that principals believe the provision of counselling services had a significant impact on student's academic achievement, even though most of the secondary schools do not have a good counselling unit, qualified counsellors, and counselling facilities. This study recommends that a well-equipped counselling unit should be available in schools. Only certified counsellors should be deployed to offer counselling services to students. Lastly, students should be sensitized and encouraged by the school on the need for them to go for counselling to solve their numerous challenges
- ItemTechnical Know-How, and Ease of Use of Library Management System for Resource Management in Nigerian Universities(Bayero Journal of Library and Information Science, 2025-04-12) Ismaila Aliyu YahayaThe level or dexterity of individual technical-know-how determine to a great extent the level of user friendliness and ease of use of library management system for resource management. Therefore, this study aims at surveying the impact of technical know-how on the ease of use of library management system for resource management in Nigeria universities. The study relied exclusively on the qualitative data that were sourced from articles, journal, textbooks and the internet and also adopted the Resource Based Value Theory (RBV) as its theoretical framework. Findings from the reviewed secondary materials reveals that majority of the user’s lack much skills (technical-known) required for utilizing this application. However, there was significant disparities among library staff and users across university in Nigeria in terms usage abilities. It was also discovered that challenges such as inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, outdated technology, weak policy coordination, and low motivation also contributed to its operational failure. Therefore, the ease use of library management system for resource management across university is south-western Nigeria is confronted by challenges of lack of skills, funding, weak policy among other challenges. Therefore, the paper recommended that there should be constants training and development of staff in other to increase technical know-how among facilitators and users, increase constant energy supply, improve modern facilities, and working conditions of services in other to motivate employees and public users.
- ItemCollection Development Policy, Acquisition Management and Postgraduate Use of E Resources in a Nigerian University Library(Bayero Journal of Library and Information Science, 2026-04-12) Abdulsalam A. Salman; A. O. Issa; Ismaila Aliyu YahayaThe study surveyed collection development policies, acquisition management and postgraduate use of e-resources in university library. A descriptive survey design was adopted and a sample of 237 postgraduate students were selected by using the total enumeration sampling technique. A self-designed questionnaire was used to collect data from 237 respondents, of which 224 copies were returned and filled. Frequency counts and percentages were used to analyze the data collected for the research questions while PPMC was used to test the two null hypotheses of the study. The instrument was validated using face validity by giving two copies of the questionnaire to the research experts with a reliability co-efficient of r=0.721 by using Cronbach alpha. The result showed that there is a significant relationship between acquisition management practices and utilization of e-resources. This is shown in the result where the correlation coefficient (r) is = 0.81 while the degree of freedom is 222 and the P-value is 0.000 which is less than the significance level of 0.05. The results of the first hypothesis showed a significant relationship between collection development policies and the utilization of electronic resources by postgraduate students. Furthermore, the results of the second hypothesis showed a significant relationship between acquisition management practices and the utilization of electronic resources among postgraduate students. The study found out that there is difficulty in accessing the library’s electronic resources due to poor internet connectivity and insufficient electronic databases to cover all relevant research areas in their field are the major challenge associated with the utilization of electronic resources at the University of Ilorin. The study recommends that libraries should regularly review and update their collection development policies to align with evolving research trends and also provide infrastructure facilities like electricity and internet which will no doubt provide remedy to the problem in question.
