EFFECT OF GARLIC (Allium sativum) EXTRACT ON FUNGAL SPOILAGE AND PRESERVATION OF ONION (Allium cepa) BULBS
(Nigerian Journal of Mycology, 2022) OLURANTI, O.O. and SANGOYOMI, T.E.
The study investigated the occurrence and virulence of some fungal pathogens causing rot of onions. Antifungal potentials of garlic extract against these fungi and its effects on shelf life were also studied. Ten percent aqueous garlic extract was used in fungal growth inhibition of artificially inoculated onion bulbs as well as whole bulb preservation experiments and sterile distilled water served as control in both experiments. Results showed that Aspergillus niger, A. niger, Penicillium and Rhizopus sp occurred in rotting onion bulbs and Aspergillus niger was found to be the most virulent, having a mean rot diameter of 1.94mm, followed by A. flavus (0.42 mm), Rhizopus sp (0.15 mm), while Penicillium sp was the least virulent in causing rot in the bulbs, with 0.12 mm. Onion bulbs inoculated with blank agar disc showed no rot symptoms. There were significant differences between the control and treated samples at p<0.05. Garlic extract was effective in inhibiting mycelial growth of all fungal pathogens in the pretreated onion bulbs (Aspergillus niger (2.84 mm), Aspergillus flavus (1.61 mm), Penicillium (0.48 mm) and Rhizopus spp ( 0.54 mm) and were significantly lower than control at p<0.05. Whole onion bulbs (treated and control) remained healthy without any sign of rot until 4 weeks after storage however, mean rot reduction of 58% was observed in onion bulbs treated with 10% garlic extract at 9 weeks after storage. The untreated (control) samples developed rot symptoms after four weeks of storage. Garlic extract could be used to elongate shelf life of onions due to its antifungal and preservative potentials.

A Trade-Off between the PLSR and PCR Models for Modelling Data with Collinear Structure
    (Nigerian Association of Mathematical Physics, 2017-01) Yahya W. B.; Olorede K.O.; Garba M.K.; Banjoko A.W.; Dauda K.A.
This paper investigates the partial least squares regression (PLSR) and principal component regression (PCR) methods as versatile alternative regression techniques when the use of the ordinary least squares method breaks down. Emphasis is more on the situation where the predictor variables are evidently correlated. Data sets with Gaussian non-orthogonal predictor variables were simulated at different sample sizes ranging from 20 to 1000 to examine the performance of the two regression types under varying situations. The data were randomly partitioned into training and test sets with both PLSR and PCR models constructed on the training sets while their performances were evaluated on the test sets using themean square error of predictions and other indices. At each fit of the models, the leave-one-out cross-validation technique was employed to enhance the efficiency and stability of the fitted models. Results from the simulation studies revealed the goodness of the two regression methods but at varying degrees of accuracy. More importantly, it is evident from the results that though, both the PLSR and PCR techniques yielded good regression models, the PLSRtechniqueis consistently more efficient on the test datain terms of good predictions than the PCR method irrespective of sample sizes. Also in terms of model parsimony, the PLSR technique yielded efficient regression models with relatively fewer latent components than the PCR method. Data sets on the performance of M.Sc. graduates from the Department of Statistics, University of Ilorin, Nigeria during the 2012 academic session were used to validate the results from the Monte Carlo studies.

Relationship between Cybercrime and Consumers Confidence in Nigeria Deposit Money Banks
(Alumni Association, Kwara state University, Malete, 2021-08) Ibrahim Sheriff Akanji
The advent of information technology has greatly impacted on the operational efficiency of the financial service sector, availing them the opportunity to offer variety of E-banking service that has greatly impacted on the economy of scale and scope of participants in the sector, this albeit has exposed the bank and financial service sector to cyberc rime risk, which pose serious threat to their survival. This research analyzed the relationship between cybercrime and consumers' confidence in Deposit Money Banks (DMBs). The research is qualitative and made use of the primary data collected from 200 DMBs customers, using self- structured and administered questionnaires. The hypothesis was tested using correlation and regression. The finding of this research shows a negative and significant relationship between cybercrime and consumers' confidence and therefore recommends the need for accelerated ethical awareness and culture o f both customers and staffs a s factors that influence IT security and draw banks managements and policy makers' attention to the importance of integrating cyber-security issues as part of their corporate asset protection model. By so doing, it will leave little opportunity for cybercriminals to attack banks customers as they will become more aware and personally protective. Overall, the research concludes that to enhance the survival of deposit money banks, cyber-risk • must be integrated into the risk management framework of deposit money banks.

    (COLLECTION RECHERCHES & RECGARS D’AFRIQUE N 0 SPECIAL FIN CAMPAGNE / NOV 2022, 2022) Akunna Pauline NNABUIKE
The arrival of children in families is considered as blessings. These children are pampered, adored and well cared for especially when they are considered legitimate. They lack almost nothing because they are innocents. However, when children are considered illegitimate, especially in West Africa and in Senegal, they suffer abuse. A critical look at the lives of 36 SSBN : 978-2- 493659- 02- 6 COLLECTION RECHERCHES & RECGARS D’AFRIQUE N 0 SPECIAL FIN CAMPAGNE / NOV 2022 illegitimate children reveals that everywhere in Senegal, they are subjected to abuse and ill treatment. This is the case of Senegalese children in Fatou Diome’s Impossible de grandir. This novel highlights the mentality of the majority of Senegalese against illegitimate children. In this article based on sociological theory, several consequences of the mistreatment of illegitimate children are highlighted. Fatou Diome reveals that the humiliation and abuse of illegitimate children have their source in the mentality of Senegalese. She is of the opinion that if these children experience suffering, denial, hatred, the society sanctions it and this leads to underdevelopment because illegitimate children are often neglected. Diome advocates education, physical and social security for all children in African society.
