Abstract
The arrival of children in families is considered as blessings. These children are pampered, adored and well cared for especially when they are considered legitimate. They lack almost nothing because they are innocents. However, when children are considered illegitimate, especially in West Africa and in Senegal, they suffer abuse. A critical look at the lives of 36 SSBN : 978-2- 493659- 02- 6 COLLECTION RECHERCHES & RECGARS D’AFRIQUE N 0 SPECIAL FIN CAMPAGNE / NOV 2022 illegitimate children reveals that everywhere in Senegal, they are subjected to abuse and ill treatment. This is the case of Senegalese children in Fatou Diome’s Impossible de grandir. This novel highlights the mentality of the majority of Senegalese against illegitimate children. In this article based on sociological theory, several consequences of the mistreatment of illegitimate children are highlighted. Fatou Diome reveals that the humiliation and abuse of illegitimate children have their source in the mentality of Senegalese. She is of the opinion that if these children experience suffering, denial, hatred, the society sanctions it and this leads to underdevelopment because illegitimate children are often neglected. Diome advocates education, physical and social security for all children in African society.
