- ItemPERSONALITY TRAITS AS PREDICTORS OF ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AMONG UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION STUDENTS IN PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES ADAMAWA STATE, NIGERIA(Kwara State University Press, 2023-10-12) Samuel Midenda Junior & Owonwami, I. T.This research investigated personality traits as predictors of academic achievement among undergraduate education students in public universities in Adamawa State. The main purpose of the study was to determine the level to which personality traits (openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness & neuroticism) predict the academic achievement of undergraduate students. One research question and one hypothesis were raised to guide the study. The target population of the study was 2,287 undergraduate students in public universities in Adamawa State, Yola Nigeria. A sample of 330 participants was selected for the study through multi-stage sampling, two instruments were used. The Big Five Inventory model and theory by McCrae & Costa (1992) was adopted, and a Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient of 0.875 was obtained for internal consistency. Pro forma was used to collect students' CGPA, Mean and Standard Deviation were used to answer the research question while multiple regression was used to answer the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The results revealed that the big five personality traits (Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, Extroversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism) predict undergraduate student's academic achievement with a significant regression equation (F , 315) = 173.666, p = 0.000 p < 0.05 with an R of 73.6 %. The study concluded that the Big Five personality traits (Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, Extroversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism) are good predictors of academic achievement of undergraduate students
- ItemAN ASSESSMENT OF AVAILABILITY AND UTILIZATION OF PRESCHOOL RECORDS IN ILORIN WEST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF KWARA STATE(Department of Early Childhood and Primary Education, 2023-11-01) Yahaya Olarewaju, Bilikis Ajoke Olasinde, Halimat I'ya Ismail-Orire, & Obafemi Ezechiel Obafemi (PhD)The study examined an assessment of availability and utilization of Preschool Records. Therefore, descriptive survey design type was adopted, the population comprised private and public primary schools and pupils. Simple random sampling technique was used to select twenty (22) public Primary schools out of sixty-one (61) and ninety-eight (98) private primary schools out of two hundred and sixty-six (266) in which one hundred and twenty 120 Schools were randomly selected. 120 schools were randomly selected as sample size. The instrument was tittle, Assessment of Utilization of Preschool Records observation (AUPRO) and availability of preschool records observation checklist (APROC). Face and content and validity were done by experts. Pearson Product Moment Correlation of Co efficiency (PPMC) was used to determine the reliability index which was (r=.79) The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency counts, percentage, and mean research question while inferential statistics of t-test was used to test the hypotheses. The findings shown that records are available in and the extent of utilization of preschool records and it can be concluded that preschool records are available and result also revealed the extent of utilization of preschool records in Ilorin West LGA of Kwara State was high, recommended made, seminars on the maintenance of school records should be intensified by both state and federal Governments.
- ItemINFLUENCE OF SCHOOL FACILITIES ON TEACHERS' EFFECTIVENESS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ILORIN METROPOLIS(Department of Early Childhood and Primary Education, 2023-11-01) Dr. O. G Olorisade, & Anastasia. A. BadmusThe subject of school facilities has received great attention from the public as well as educators in recent times. The study examined the perceived influence of school facilities on teachers' effectiveness in secondary schools in Ilorin metropolis. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population of this study was 2,032 comprised of 173 principals from Public and Private schools respectively, and 1,859 teachers comprised from Public and Private Senior Secondary Schools respectively in Ilorin metropolis, Kwara State of which 80 Principals and 467 teachers from public and private schools were randomly sampled. A 70-item self-designed questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection based on 4-point Likert rating scale. Mean ratings and standard deviation were the statistical tools used for data analysis. Means of 2.50 and above were accepted for the research questions. Findings of the study revealed that Library facilities were under-utilized for teaching and learning in secondary schools in Ilorin metropolis (mean = 1.72, SD = 0.89); Science laboratory facilities were under-utilized for teaching and learning in secondary schools in Ilorin metropolis (mean = 1.72, SD = 0.89); ICT facilities were underutilized for teaching and learning in Secondary Schools in Ilorin metropolis (mean = 1.38, SD = 0.55); and that, School facilities have significant influence on teachers' effectiveness in secondary schools in Ilorin metropolis (mean = 3.05, SD = 0.44). From the findings, it could be concluded that, Books and maps which are library facilities; Pipettes, centrifuges, Bunsen burner and stirrer which are science laboratory, computer which are ICT facilities, together with, methodology in teaching, the instructional material, assignment, assessment of the students, discipline, classroom instructional climate, content of knowledge, student's perception of teacher's effectiveness, influence of teachers on students and professional behavior of teachers contribute positively to teachers' effectiveness in secondary schools in Ilorin metropolis. Based on the conclusion it was recommended that the Government should earmark a substantial amount of money (that is from the national budget) for the provision of needed facilities in the schools. There should be an adequate and prompt supply of infrastructural facilities into all secondary schools. Also, proper, and timely maintenance of these facilities are essential. Most of the facilities available are in a poor state of disrepair. Hence, educational planners and school leaders should carry out extensive repairs, renovation, retrofitting and replacement of some major component.
- ItemEFFECT OF FLIPPED LEARNING ON PUPILS' ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN LITERACY IN ILORIN SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT OF KWARA STATE.(Department of Early Childhood and Primary Education, 2023-11-01) Dr Usman Tunde Saadu, Dr Hafees Tosin Sulyman, Ramat Teniola NA-ALLAH, & Fatima YusufThe traditional classroom teaching approach may not be enough to fully engage pupils in the learning process, and this led to poor academic performance in literacy. This study makes used of quasi-experimental design. The population of this study comprises all pupils in Ilorin south local government. The sampling technique was multistage. The researcher sampled 15 learners in experimental group and 20 learners in control group. Two instruments were used for this study, namely flipped learning instructional guide (FLIG) and pupils' literacy achievement test (PLAT). The two instruments were validated, and the achievement test was subjected to reliability. The data for this study were collected using quantitative methods. Quantitative data were done through pre-tests and post-tests of literacy administered to the pupils. The data collected through the pre-tests and post-tests were analyzed using ANCOVA. The findings of this study revealed there was a significant main effect of treatment on primary school pupil academic performance in literacy in Ilorin South Local Government, Kwara State (F = .153, P< 0.05). (1; 28) Flipped learning and gender had no combined interactive effect on primary school pupil academic performance in literacy in Ilorin South Local Government (F (1; 28) =.599; P > 0.05). Based on the findings, it is recommended that teachers and educators should consider implementing flipped learning as a teaching strategy, as it has been shown to have a positive impact on academic performance in literacy.
- ItemPERCEIVED INFLUENCE OF SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENT WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY IN ILORIN METROPOLIS(Department of Early Childhood and Primary Education, 2023-11-01) Adedayo ADESOKAN, Esther Oluwatimileyin OGUNFEYITIMI and Yewande Ololade OLADELESchool Environment has been one of the causes of low academic performance of students with Intellectual disabilities due to poor school environment, unattractive school building, unqualified teachers, inadequate instructional materials, and class size. Therefore, the study examined perceive the influence of school environment on the academic performance of students with intellectual disability. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for this study. The respondents were one hundred and twenty (120) teachers teaching students with intellectual disabilities. A purposive sampling technique was used to select the respondents for the study. One research instrument was used and the reliability score of 0.88. One research question was stated and one hypothesis was formulated and tested at 0.5 significant level. Frequency count, percentage, mean, and t-test were used to analyze the data gathered. The findings of the study revealed that the perceived influence of school environment on the academic performance of students with intellectual disabilities is positive (mean=3.2), it was also revealed that there is no significant difference on the perceived influence of school environment on academic performance of students with intellectual disability in Ilorin metropolis based on gender (p<0.05). It was concluded that school environment influence academic performance of students with intellectual disabilities, it was therefore, recommended that the school environments be conducive enough to ensure safety and uninterrupted learning among students with intellectual disabilities. The government should provide funds and equipment for the school with the resources needed to handle students with intellectual disabilities.
- ItemASSESSMENT OF PRIMARY SCHOOL SECURITY STATUS IN ILORIN WEST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF KWARA STATE(Department of Early Childhood and Primary Education, 2023-11-01) Oluwanifemi Olaide OLAYONU & Usman Tunde SA'ADUThe schools have been deeply affected by the economic, political, and social conditions of our time, and have been exposed to many undesirable events and behaviors such as substance addiction, violence, child abuse and sabotage. The study examined the assessment of primary school security status in Ilorin West Local government area of Kwara state. One research question and two hypotheses guided the study, the study adopted descriptive survey research design, The population for this study was all primary schools principals in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State, 64 schools were randomly selected as sample size, Observation Checklist on School Security (OCSS) was used for the study , reliability coefficient was (r=.84), mean and percentage were used for research question while hypotheses were tested using inferential statistics of t-test were used to test the hypotheses. The findings of this study revealed that there were availability of school security in primary school in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State, school type and location had no significant difference of primary school security status in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State(t = -.651, df = 62, p < 0.05), (t = -.336, df = 62, p > 0.05). Based on the findings of this study, it can be stated that there were availability of school security in primary school in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State. The following recommendations were made; government and stakeholders should make more provision for school securities and educational stakeholder should provide adequate security facilities, policies and curriculum for early childhood education.
- ItemTHE EFFECTS OF DIGITAL STORYTELLING ON PUPILS' ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND LEARNING RETENTION IN LITERACY IN KANO STATE, NIGERIA(2023-11-01) Musa Lawan, Dr. Usman Tunde Saadu, Dr. J. S Maman, & Dr. Adedayo AdesokanThis experimental research aimed to examine the influence of incorporating rhymes into literacy instruction on the learning retention and academic achievement of pupils in Kano State, Nigeria. The study adopted a pretest-posttest control group design and involved 103 pupils (50 in the experimental group and 53 in the control group) selected from primary schools within Kano State. The experimental group received instruction enriched with rhymes, while the control group received conventional instruction. By employing t-tests for comparative analysis of the mean scores between the two groups, the findings revealed that pupils exposed to rhymes during instruction exhibited significantly improved learning retention and academic achievement when compared to those exposed to traditional instruction. This suggests that the incorporation of rhymes in literacy instruction positively impacts pupils' learning outcomes. The implications of these results underscore the advantages of integrating rhymes into literacy education. Such an approach can effectively enhance pupils' engagement and comprehension, contributing to improved learning retention. Moreover, the findings advocate for the adoption of interactive and engaging teaching methods, such as the use of rhymes, to foster a conducive learning environment. In the context of Kano State, Nigeria, where educational resources may be limited, the incorporation of rhymes represents a cost-effective and culturally relevant strategy for promoting effective literacy instruction and academic success among pupils. These findings serve as a valuable resource for educators and policymakers, highlighting the potential of innovative teaching approaches to advance educational outcomes in the region.
- ItemMODE OF ENTRY AS CORRELATES OF PRESERVICE TEACHERS' PERFORMANCE IN EARLY CHILDHOOD AND PRIMARY EDUCATION IN KWARA STATE, NIGERIA(Department of Early Childhood and Primary Education, 2023-11-01) Oluwanifemi Olaide OLAYONU & Usman Tunde SAADUDespite the importance of early childhood and primary education, there is a gap between the quality and the number of teachers and the practice of early childhood education. One research question and three hypotheses were generated and tested in this study, the research question were answered using frequency count, percentage and mean independent samples t-test and PPMC were used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The study employed the Correlational Survey Research Design. The study sample size was 248 and Multi-Stage Sampling Technique was adopted to select respondents. The instruments used for data collection were questionnaire titled 'Mode of Entry of Pre-Service Teachers Performance Questionnaire (MEAPTPQ) and Pre-service Teachers Academic Performance results (PTAPR).The reliability of MEAPTPQ is 0.77. The findings revealed that there was significant positive relationship between mode of entry and academic performance of pre-service teachers (r = 0.257; P < 0.05). The hypothesis is therefore rejected, another findings revealed that there was positive relationship between the academic performance of early childhood and primary education pre-service teachers and their attitudes to the subject in the universities (r = .301; df = 246; .P< 0.05). The hypothesis is therefore rejected. Based on the Findings of the Study, it was concluded that there was positive relationship between the Academic Performance of Early Childhood and Primary Education Pre-Service Teachers' in the University. The following Recommendations were made: Universities Admission board should ensure the enrolment of more male pre service teachers for the course, more so Universities and Faculty of Education should give more orientation to Pre- Service Teachers' towards the course.
- ItemINFLUENCE OF YEARS OF EXPERIENCE ON HEAD-TEACHERS' MANAGERIAL BEHAVIOUR IN PUBLIC PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN RIVERS STATE EAST SENATORIAL DISTRICT(Department of Early Childhood and Primary Education, 2023-11-01) Obuzor Grace & Prof. Nnamdi AneroThis study examined the influence of years of experience on head teachers' managerial behaviour in public primary schools in Rivers East Senatorial, Rivers State. Two research questions were formulated with two corresponding hypotheses. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for this study and the study was conducted in Rivers East Senatorial District. The population of the study consisted of 5,947 teachers found in 359 public primary schools in Rivers East Senatorial District out of which 576 teachers were sampled. To carry out the sampling, the researcher adopted the multi-stage sampling technique. A researcher designed questionnaire was used for data collection The data generated were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that there was a significant influence of head teachers' experience on managerial behaviour in public primary schools in Rivers State East Senatorial District; and there was a significant difference in managerial behaviour based on low, middle and high experience in Rivers State East Senatorial District. It was recommended that years of experience should be considered before the appointment of personnel as head teachers since it helps them to be more competent in school management.
- ItemRELATIONSHIPAMONG COGNITIVE STYLES OF FIELD INDEPENDENCE, FIELD DEPENDENCE AND SENIOR SECONDARY STUDENTS' ACHIEVEMENT IN MATHEMATICS IN ILORIN EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT, KWARA STATE(Department of Early Childhood and Primary Education, 2023-11-01) Dr. Yunusa Kayode, SAADU (corresponding Author) & Sheu Muritala AdaramojaMathematics is key to science and technological development of any nation. Research has revealed the downward trend in students' performance in Mathematics and this has been partly traced to teacher and learner-related factors. Therefore, this study investigated the relationship between cognitive styles of field independence/ field dependence and students' achievement in Mathematics in Ilorin East Local Government, Kwara State. The objectives of the study were to assess: (i) students' profile of academic achievement (ii) students' cognitive styles (FI/FD) (iii) the relationship among field independence, field independence and students' achievement in Mathematics. The study adopted a descriptive research design of correlational type. The sample comprised 270 students III in Ilorin East, Kwara State. An adapted version of FI and FD Scale by Wyss (2002) and an adopted Mathematics Performance Test in WAEC May/June 2022 multiple choice past questions were used for data collection. The reliability coefficients and face and content validity of the instruments were determined. The data collected were analyzed using frequency count, percentage, and Multiple regression at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed a significant positive relationship among field independence/ field dependence and students' achievement in 2 Mathematics (R =.041; F=5.684, p0.05). The study concluded that students' academic performance in Mathematics has positive relationship with students' cognitive styles of field independence and field dependence. The implication of this study is that students' cognitive style is a positive factor of students' achievement in Mathematics. It was recommended among others that stakeholders, especially teachers, should take into account students' cognitive styles and adapt their teaching methods to suit the learners' cognitive styles especially in teaching mathematics.
- ItemPARENTAL INFLUENCE ON EARLY GIRL-CHILD EDUCATION IN WAMAKKO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, SOKOTO STATE(Department of Early Childhood and Primary Education, 2023-11-01) Usman Tunde Saadu (Ph.D), Fatima, Yusuf & Ramat Teniola Na'AllahThis study was designed to determine the factors that hinders girl-child Education in Wamakko local government, Sokoto State, Nigeria. and the possible solutions. A descriptive research design was used for the study. A total of 135 parents with girls of school-going age were selected from the twenty-five thousand (25,000) study population, using a multi-stage cluster sampling method. The specific objectives of this study were to assess the factors that hinders girl-child education in Wamakko local government area and possible solutions. Therefore, four research question were formulated to guide the study. The instrument for data collection was an adapted instrument title “Parental Variables on Girls' Child Education Questionnaire (PVGCDQ)”that was administered to students after validation and tested for reliability. Data generated from these instruments were analyzed using descriptive statistics (SPSS). A reliability index score of 0.85 was obtained through cronchba alfa. The findings revealed the perception of parents that girlchild education was against their religion and culture, poverty, co-education, parents' lack of education, hawking amongst girls, early marriage and demand for girls' labour at home. Based on the findings, some recommendations were made; adequate career guidance and counselling service should be employed to guide student especially the female, the importance of education and more awareness campaign for improvement in girl-child education that will involve both traditional and religious leaders as they exert great influence upon their people.
- ItemEVALUATION OF THE PROVISION AND UTILIZATION OF INSTRUCTIONALAND INFRASTRUCTURAL FACILITIES UNDER THE “EVERY CHILD COUNTS CURRICULUM” PROGRAMME IN PUBLIC PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN KWARA CENTRAL SENATORIAL DISTRICT(Department of Early Childhood and Primary Education, 2023-11-01) Sambo Fatiu Akorede & Prof. Nnamdi AneroThe study was conducted to evaluate instructional and infrastructural facilities under the “Every Child Counts Curriculum” Programme in Public Primary Schools in Kwara Central Senatorial District. Two research objectives and questions guided the study. Relevant literature were reviewed, and the descriptive survey research design was employed for this study. The population of the study consisted of 5602 teachers found in 697 public primary schools in Kwara Central Senatorial District constitute the population of the study out of which 560 were sampled. The instrument for data collection was a researcher designed questionnaire used to collect information about instructional and infrastructural facilities under the “Every Child Counts Curriculum” in Public Primary Schools in Kwara Central Senatorial District. The reliability of the instrument was conducted through the split-half method and Pearson product Moment Correlation (PPMC) was used to calculate the and an index 0.78 was obtained. Mean and standard deviation was used to answer the research questions. The results indicated a moderate overall increase in the provision of instructional materials andinfrastructural facilities, in the Kwara Central Senatorial District. It was concluded that there is an overall increase in the provision and utilization of instructional and infrastructural facilities. The study recommended that State Universal Basic Education Board and local government education authorities are enjoined to train teachers on the proper use of instructional materials and delivery of instructional materials to schools at the commencement of every session in-line with the provision of infrastructural materials for further achievement of the UBE objectives which is the major focus of Every Child Counts Curriculum.
- ItemEFFECTS OF MATHEMATICS PRE-TEACHING ON SENIOR SCHOOL STUDENTS' ACHIEVEMENT IN BIOLOGY IN ILORIN, NIGERIA(Department of Early Childhood and Primary Education, 2023-11-01) Gbigbadua, Abdulraheem Dare (Ph.D.), Bello, Ganiyu (Ph.D.), & Sulaiman, Musa Mohammed (Ph.D.)Genetics is a branch of Biology that deals with the study of heredity and variation is considered one of the hard-to-teach and hard-to-learn biological concepts in literature. Conceptual understanding of genetics enhances students' performance in both internal and external examinations. The study, therefore, sought to examine the effects of mathematics pre-teaching on senior school students' achievement in genetics. Specifically, two research questions and corresponding hypotheses were raised and tested in the study. All the hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significant. The study adopted a quasi-experimental research design and the samples for the study were drawn from two intact classes that were purposively selected from Ilorin metropolis. Genetics Achievement Test and Mathematics pre-teaching manual served as the response and stimulus instruments respectively. Findings from the study revealed that students exposed to Mathematics pre-teaching instructional strategy achieved significantly better than their counterpart that were taught using the conventional method. Gender also did not have any significant influence on the achievement of male and female students taught using the mathematics pre-teaching strategy. Based on the findings from the study, it was concluded that exposing students to basic mathematical concepts that are relevant to proper understanding of genetics brings about better understanding of genetics and hence, improves their achievement in genetics. It was therefore recommended that teachers could adopt pre-teaching of the mathematical components of genetics before teaching genetics.
- ItemPARENTS' PERCEIVED INFLUENCE OF EARLY MARRIAGE ON GIRL-CHILD EDUCATION IN GUSAU METROPOLIS AREA OF ZAMFARA STATE(2023-11-01) Olumuyiwa Ayobami AJAYI, Ph.D., Hafees Tosin SULYMAN. Ph.D., & Mosumola Tessy AROGBOEducation is the foundation for economic and social development of any country. Thus, education to all children either male or female is important. Early marriage is a global concept that affects the educational and social development as well as health, mental, and physical wellbeing of individual. Parental influence is seen to have a greater impact on early child marriage. Many parents justify the denial of girls' right to education, as marrying off their daughters as early as possible to prevent them from becoming sexually active before marriage, and not to bring dishonor to the family and community. This study examined the parents' perceived influence of early marriage on girl-child education in Gusau Metropolis, Zamfara State. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for this study. The population of this study comprised all parents of public primary school pupils in Gusau metropolis of Zamfara state. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 360 parents of primary six pupils in Gusau metropolis Zamfara State. One research question was raised, and three hypotheses were formulated. The research instrument that was used to obtain data from the respondents was a questionnaire titled' Questionnaire on Parents' Influence of Early Marriage on Girl Child Education (QPIEMGCE) and the instrument was subjected to face and content validity by four lecturers in the department of Early Childhood and Primary Education and the reliability coefficient (r=0.75) was obtained using test-retest method. Data obtained from respondents were analyzed using frequency count and mean for research question while Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to analyze hypotheses one and two, while hypothesis three was tested using t-test all at 0.05 level of significance. Findings among others showed there was no significant difference in parents' perception of the influence of early marriage on girl child education based on socio-economic status of parents' income (F= 1.310; P > 0.05). It was concluded that parents' perception on early marriage has positive effect on girl-child education in Gusau metropolis. It was recommended that sensitization should be carried out regularly to educate parents on the need to educate the girl-child, also, government should regularly organize seminar to educate parents and pupils on the importance of girl-child education.
- ItemEFFECT OF PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING STRATEGY ON PUPILS' ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN BASIC SCIENCE IN ILORIN WEST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF KWARA STATE(Department of Early Childhood and Primary Education, 2023-11-01) Azeez Arisekola SALMAN, Usman Tunde SAADU & Semiu AlasinrinThis study investigates the effect of problem-based learning on pupils' academic performance in Basic Science in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State. The study adopted a pre-test, post-test control group, quasi-experimental design. Multistage sampling techniques were used to select the schools that participated. Schools were divided into two strata public and private using stratified random sampling technique. A simple random sampling technique was used to select four (4) primary schools, two public and two privates. These schools were randomly assigned to an experimental group and control group respectively. Five hypotheses were formulated. Pupils' Basic Science Performance Test (PBSPT) was used to obtained pupils score in Basic Science with a reliability coefficient of 0.74, and two treatment packages were used, Instructional Guide for Problem Based Learning (IGPBL) and Instructional Guide for Conventional Method (IGCM). All the research hypotheses were tested using the Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) all at 0.05 level of significance. The results of findings revealed among others that there was a significant effect of Problem-Based Learning on pupils' academic performance in Basic Science in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State (F = (1; 86) 14.977, P < 0.05). Olorisade PhD, Hamed Olatunji Adam 3 & Rabiat Ladi AbdullahiPoor Academic performance has been observed in Kwara state secondary schools this result from inappropriate application of principals' managerial skills, lack of school discipline and unfriendly school climate. This study examined the relationship between principals' managerial skills and school effectiveness in public secondary schools in Ilorin metropolis. Descriptive research design of correlational type was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised 4,067 teachers. Samples of 360 teachers was selected using stratified random sampling techniques. 1Principals' Managerial Skills Questionnaire (PMSQ) and School Effectiveness Questionnaire (SEQ) was used to collect data for the study. The PMSQ was appropriately validated, while reliability coefficient obtained was 0.92. Mean and standard deviation was used to analyze the research questions while inferential statistics of Pearson Product Movement Coefficient (PPMC) was used to test the hypothesis at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings of this study revealed among others that there was significance relationship between principals' managerial skills and school effectiveness based on school climate and school discipline (r= .393; p= 0.000<0.05; significant).. The study concluded that managing educational systems demands that school principals should possess adequate managerial skills. It was recommended that school principals who are not professional teachers should be encouraged by the policy makers to get at least a certificate in education in order to understand and master require managerial skills.
- ItemTEACHERS AWARENESS OF CHILD RIGHTS IN FUNTUA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF KATSINA STATE(2023-11-01) Abdullahi Lawal & Dr Usman Tunde SaaduThis study investigates the awareness of child rights among teachers in the Funtua Local Government Area of Katsina State. Using a descriptive survey research design, data were collected from 81 respondents selected from both private and public primary schools through simple random sampling techniques. An instrument with 15 items was developed and validated for the study, revealing a reliability coefficient of 0.73. The data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The findings indicated a generally low awareness level among teachers regarding child rights in the area (WA = 2.20). Furthermore, the study did not find a significant difference in awareness between male and female teachers (t = 0.423; df = 78; p>0.05) and identified a significant difference in awareness based on teachers' years of experience (F(3,76) = 3.236; P>0.05). Consequently, the study concludes that teachers generally lack awareness of child rights and recommends that the government organize seminars and conferences to enlighten teachers and parents about the significance of nurturing children and protecting their rights, including access to education, health, and protection from exploitation and inhumane treatment.

Sadly, instances of gender-based violence have been reported among pupils across Nigeria's 36 states, underscoring the need for urgent attention from the adults closest to them: parents and teachers. This study aimed to bridge the noticeable gap in understanding by investigating parents' and teachers' awareness and attitudes regarding Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in primary schools, focusing on three geopolitical zones in Nigeria. Employing a descriptive survey research design, the study randomly selected 1200 parents and 600 teachers from the North-Central, South-West, and South-South zones. Two meticulously developed questionnaires, one for assessing parents' knowledge and attitudes towards GBV and the other for evaluating teachers' understanding and perspectives, were used as research instruments, having undergone thorough validation and reliability checks. The analysis of demographic information relied on descriptive statistics such as mean, standard deviation, and percentage. Notably, the study found that parents' awareness of School-Related Gender-Based Violence (SRGBV) was notably deficient, with a prevalent negative attitude toward SRGBV. Additionally, it was discovered that teachers had a limited awareness of the occurrence of GBV in primary schools (M = 1.68; SD = 1.24). Based on these findings, it is evident that a comprehensive strategy to address GBV in primary schools must involve focused efforts to raise awareness and education among both parents and teachers. Concerted efforts are required to enhance knowledge and foster positive attitudes, thereby creating a safer and more supportive environment for the pupils. It is imperative that schools and communities implement robust educational programs and policies to combat GBV effectively, safeguarding the well being of the younger generation

S MAMAN, & Dr. Adedayo ADESOKANThis experimental research aimed to examine the influence of incorporating rhymes into literacy instruction on the learning retention and academic achievement of pupils in Kano State, Nigeria. The study adopted a pretest-posttest control group design and involved 103 pupils (50 in the experimental group and 53 in the control group) selected from primary schools within Kano State. The experimental group received instruction enriched with rhymes, while the control group received conventional instruction. By employing t-tests for comparative analysis of the mean scores between the two groups, the findings revealed that pupils exposed to rhymes during instruction exhibited significantly improved learning retention and academic achievement when compared to those exposed to traditional instruction. This suggests that the incorporation of rhymes in literacy instruction positively impacts pupils' learning outcomes. The implications of these results underscore the advantages of integrating rhymes into literacy education. Such an approach can effectively enhance pupils' engagement and comprehension, contributing to improved learning retention. Moreover, the findings advocate for the adoption of interactive and engaging teaching methods, such as the use of rhymes, to foster a conducive learning environment. In the context of Kano State, Nigeria, where educational resources may be limited, the incorporation of rhymes represents a cost-effective and culturally relevant strategy for promoting effective literacy instruction and academic success among pupils. These findings serve as a valuable resource for educators and policymakers, highlighting the potential of innovative teaching approaches to advance educational outcomes in the region.
