Use of electronic information resources by university lecturers in Edo State, Nigeria

The limited access to up-to-date materials in university libraries in Nigeria is a main problem that impedes research and teaching. In the last couple of years, lecturers in Nigerian tertiary institutions have increasingly demanded and preferred access to electronic sources delivery and networked information from their respective libraries. The objectives of this study are to: i. identify the benefits the university lecturers in Edo State derive from using electronic information resources; ii. find out the available facilities for using electronic information resources by the university lecturers in Edo State. The study concludes that the university lecturers in Edo State derive several benefits from the use of electronic information resources. However, the available facilities for using electronic information resources are not encouraging. Except for the fact that university lecturers have personal computers at home coupled with handheld devices and the universities’ e-libraries, the universities do not have departmental computer laboratories not to talk of personal computer at their offices. The researchers provided the following recommendations: i. The university managements should provide well equipped computer laboratories for all the departments and provide personal computers in the university lecturers’ offices. ii. The university managements should provide funds for subscription to more primary and secondary electronic sources. Reasonable investment should be made on the university’s e-library so as to be able to subscribe to several databases and provide internet services to lecturers free of charge. iii. There is the urgent need for all the universities in Edo State to be properly funded by their financiers (federal and state governments as well as private organizations). Huge financial investment in ICTs by the universities will positively impact on the lecturers.

In the last couple of years, lecturers in Nigerian tertiary institutions have increasingly demanded and preferred access to electronic sources delivery and networked information from their respective libraries (Covi & Cragin, 2004). Timely information is required by all categories of people in the different organizations of the society and one of such organizations is the university. University lecturers equip students with skills in reading, inquiry and independent thinking and strive to develop students’ creativity, insight and analytical skills. All these necessitate seeking and use of information from various sources such as books, journals, periodicals, to mention a few. University education is changing rapidly (Toner, 2008). Bennet (2003) identified a major shift in education- The revolution in information technology is changing delivery of education. This dramatic change includes the way in which information is provided to the university community. Universities through a number of ways embrace the electronic provision of information to facilitate study programmes and research. With the integration of online information services, electronic books, electronic document delivery services and digital libraries in its library systems, university lecturers can now access information from various sources.

Use of statistical records for library management at University of Ilorin

Purpose: The study examined the use of statistical records for library management at the University of Ilorin, Kwara State. Design/Methodology/Approach: The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. Questionnaire was used to collect data from 40 library staff (professionals & paraprofessionals). Data obtained were analyzed using frequency counts and percentages. Findings: The results revealed that library statistics are used for reference analysis, selection and acquisition ofinformation resources, planning and decision making, preparation of library budget and determining the extent of library use Implication: The study admonished that statistics should be collected appropriately in order to enhance the growth and management of the library.Experts should be in charge of ZCX interpretation, compilation, analysis and distribution of statistical data. Originality/Value: The study will be off help to librarians because statistics will help them to plan library operations.
An Empirical Study on the Traits of Information Literacy Level among Senior Secondary Students in Ilorin, Nigeria

This study examined the information literacy level among secondary school students in Ilorin. This study adopted the disproportionate stratified random sampling techniques. The total population for this study 1958 students. The data for the study was collected through structured questionnaires which were distributed randomly to 210 students. However, only 192 copies of the questionnaire were properly filled and returned for analysis and thus form the basis as sample for this study (N=192). The findings of the study revealed that more than half of the respondents can identify lack of knowledge in a subject area. The study also revealed that majority of the respondents can articulate current knowledge on a topic. Furthermore, it also revealed that a large number of the respondents cannot identify specialist search tools. Also, from the study, it was revealed that noteworthy numbers of the respondents do not use Boolean operators in their search for information. Conclusively, the study shows that information literacy skills are essential for every human being because information is vital to everyone and every walk of life. It was recommended that policy makers in education sector should try and introduce information literacy skills as a subject in the secondary school curriculum so as to ensure that the students have the necessary information literacy skills rather than developing these skills through self-education. It was also recommended that teachers that have skills in information literacy skills should be employed as the facilitators in this subject.
Awareness, Availability and Accessibility of Library Resources by Students of Kwara State University, Malete, Nigeria

This study investigated the awareness, availability and accessibility of library resources by students of Kwara State University, Malete. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study and 210 undergraduate students provided the data. The findings of the study revealed that information resources were available and accessible in Kwara State University Library. The study showed that students do not know the usefulness of some of the resources and this has hampered their desire for them. Also there is a dire need of varieties of information repackaging to enhance awareness, availability and accessibility of resources in the library. Also revealed is the unfriendliness of some library staff, unclassified nature of some of the information resources. Lack of in-depth orientation on library usage with respect to the use of catalogue and the library online services were the main problems militating against accessing information resources. Therefore, library orientation should be more than mere library tour rather it should be practical in nature where students are exposed to library usage with regard to the use of the catalogue/OPAC and online resources. Current and up-to-date information resources should be made available and accessible to all students through services provided by the library staff.
Psychosocial Consequences of Intensive Internet Use among Undergraduates of Universities in Ilorin Metropolis

This study was carried out to investigate the psychosocial consequences of intensive internet use among undergraduate of universities in Ilorin metropolis, Kwara State. This study sought to determine the psychosocial consequences of intensive internet use on the basis on gender, age, level of study and marital status (University of Ilorin and AL-HIKMAH University) universities within Ilorin metropolis. A self-developed questionnaire tagged questionnaire on psychosocial consequences of intensive internet use (PCIIU) was used to collect data from the respondents for the study. Five research hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance, data collected were analyzed through analysis of variance (ANOVA). The study revealed that psychosocial consequences of intensive internet use are establishing using new relationship with fellow online users; incur more financial cost on internet; spending more time online than going out with others and there was significant gender difference in the psychosocial consequences of intensive internet use among undergraduate students of universities in Ilorin metropolis base on age, level, gender and marital status. Therefore, the following recommendations were made that counsellors should develop strategies to handle internet addiction among the youth and counsellor should encourage the formation of club that will promote safe and responsible internet use among students (peer counselling) and school administrators, teachers and school counsellors should work collaboratively to identify and assist students with or prone to internet addiction before it will have devastating consequences on the addicts and the society at large.
Copyright Issues in a Digital Library Environment

This chapter examines copyright issues in a digital library environment. The author observes that the advent of digital technology has greatly accelerated the dissemination and distribution of information which greatly accelerated the dissemination and distribution of information with great speed and accuracy never seen before. The challenges in creating digital libraries include copyright management, development of appropriate technologies, issues related to storage, architectural and technical challenges, collection development challenges and the challenges of user engagement. The chapter recommends ways of managing orphan works and the roles of digital libraries in open access to knowledge. The author concludes that current developments point to the dominant role of information and communication technology in libraries for improved access to information.
Attitude of library and information science postgraduate students towards internet usage in selected library schools in Nigeria

This study examined the attitude of Library and Information Science Postgraduate students towards Internet usage. Survey research design was adopted, the population was Library and Information Science postgraduate students in two selected library schools. The instrument used for data collection was the questionnaire, two hundred and thirty nine (239) copies of the questionnaire were administered, while two hundred and seven (207) copies were sucessfully retrieved representing 86.6% response rate. Data analysis was done using descriptive and inferencial statistics. Results show that LIS postgraduate students in Nigeria use the Internet for academic endeavours. The study recommended that drastic measures should be taken by LIS educators/administrators to provide functional internet facilities to LIS postgraduate students in their various schools to eliminate any barrier confronting them in order to enhance efficiency and quality of learning and research activities.
Application of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Information Dissemination in Special Libraries in Nigeria

Background of the study: This study examined the Application of ICT in Dissemination of Information in Selected Special Libraries in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State, Nigeria. Three Special libraries from the metropolis of the state comprised the sample population of the study; Central Bank of Nigeria Library, Michael Imoudu Institute of Labor Studies Library and Ghalib Chamber Library. Purpose: The study employed a survey research design using the Enumeration sampling technique. A questionnaire was used to obtain data from the respondents. The population of the study consisted of twenty-one (21) respondents which comprised of library professionals and library assistants. The usage of Email to render CAS is not a norm in these special libraries. Method: Data collected from the field were analyzed using descriptive method of analysis. Findings: Apart from CAS, it was found that selective dissemination of information (SDI) is not done with the aid of technological tools in these Libraries and these libraries rarely make use of OPAC to provide easy access to their resources, efficiency and effectiveness of ICT in the dissemination of information were not realized because of the low usage of ICT to drive operations in the library. The study recommended that there should be a standard alternative source of power for proper Usage of ICT facilities and management of special libraries should help their users in subscribed for a database that would assist them in having access to robust information. Conclusion: The study concluded that ICT facilities are put in place in the selected special libraries are not adequate and are as well not fully utilized. It was gathered that the usage of ICT facilities to render services like current awareness services (CAS) is not up to expectation.

Influence of demographic variables on the utilization of electronic databases by university lecturers in South-west, Nigeria

The introduction of databases by university libraries has presented lecturers with opportunities of obtaining accurate, timely and up-to-date information with little effort. However, research reports revealed that usage of databases by university lecturers in Nigeria is influenced by their demographic characteristics. Hence, this study investigated the influence of demographic variables on the utilization of databases by university lecturers in South-west, Nigeria. The objectives of this study were to: (i) identify the types of databases available to lecturers in public universities in South-west, Nigeria; and (ii) establish the influence of demographic variables of university lecturers in South-west on the utilization of databases. The study adopted survey method. The population comprised 10,452 lecturers in public universities in South-west, Nigeria. Eight hundred and thirty six (836) lecturers were proportionately selected through multi stage sampling procedure across twelve universities. Questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection from the sample. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics at 0.05 level of significance. Findings of the study were that: (i) African Journal Online (90.3%), Directory of Open Access Journal (87.1%), International Research Journal (86.4%), Google Scholar (81.1%), Emerald (62.7%) among other databases were available to lecturers in public universities in South-west, Nigeria; (ii) demographic variables: job status (F=11.66, p<0.05) and age range (F=4.62, p<0.05) influence the use of databases by lecturers. The study concluded that that demographic variables: job status (F=11.66, p<0.05) and age range (F=4.62, p<0.05) influence the use of electronic databases by university lecturers. It therefore recommended that equal and more opportunities should be provided by university libraries to all lecturers in form of training and education on databases utilization to enable them access electronic databases with ease.
Copyright Issues in Nigeria: Analysis of Nigerian Copyright Commission Cases Between the Years 2008 - 2018

Nigeria Copyright Commission is saddled with the responsibility of ensuring adherence to the copyright law in Nigeria. However, it has been observed in the last decade that copyright right issue is still rampant in Nigeria. Therefore, this study analyzed cases that the Commission in involved in between years 2008 to 2018. The study adopted citation analysis. The study collected data from three selected law reports, which include Intellectual Property Law Reports, Nigerian Weekly Law Reports and Nigeria Law Intellectual Property Watch. It was found that Nigerian Law Intellectual Property Watch has the highest number of reports of cases involving Nigerian Copyright Commission while none was reported by Nigerian Weekly Law Reports. It was also found that most of the cases handled by the Commission were on copyright infringement. The study concludes that Nigerian Copyright Commission has been paying credible attention to issue that surrounds software infringement but there has been little attention paid to book piracy. Moreover, it was established that the poor attention given to book piracy may entrench the publication of pirated copy and would subsequently lead to poor library service provision at the long run.
Availability and Awareness of Electronic Databases for Teaching and Research by Lecturers in Public Universities in South-West, Nigeria

However, research reports have revealed that there is low level of awareness of electronic databases by university lecturers. Hence this study investigated availability and awareness of electronic databases for teaching and research by lecturers in public universities in South-west, Nigeria. The objectives of the study were to: ( I ) identify the types of databases available to lecturers in public universities in South-west, Nigeria; and (ii) examine the extent of awareness of available databases for teaching and research by university lecturers in South-west, Nigeria. The study adopted the descriptive research design of a correlational type. The population comprised 10,452 lecturers in fifteen public universities in South-west, Nigeria from which a sample size of 836 was drawn using a multi stage sampling procedure. Questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics at 0.05 level of significance. Findings of the study revealed that numerous electronic databases were available in public university libraries in South-west, Nigeria and that university lecturers’ level of awareness of most of the electronic databases for teaching and research was above average (60.6%) as against below average reported in the literature. It can be concluded from the study that the university libraries in South-west, Nigeria are not creating much awareness of their electronic databases. It is therefore recommended that university libraries, especially in South west, Nigeria should intensify their promotional activities geared towards marketing their electronic databases.
Awareness and Usage of Reference Management Software: Perspectives of Faculty Members of University of Ilorin Nigeria

This study examined the awareness and usage of reference management software by faculty members of the University of Ilorin. Descriptive survey method was adopted for the study. The Web-based questionnaire was used to collect data for the study. The total population of the study is 1,496 people. From which the sample size of 306 was selected using Raosoft sample size calculator and total responses of 98 was returned, which represents the unit of analysis. Hence, the response rate for the study is 32%. The findings of the study revealed that EndNote and Mendeley are the most used reference management software by faculty members of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN). Results show that faculty members were aware of EndNote and Mendeley to great extent. It was found that there is low usage of reference management software among faculty of the University of Ilorin; and that most of the faculty members have never used ProCites, Bookends, Papers and Qiqqa. It was concluded that there is a positive significant relationship between awareness and usage of reference management software by faculty members. It was recommended that faculty members should be trained on how to make use of the most used reference management software.
Perceived Usefulness and Ease of Use as Predictors of Early-year Lawyers Satisfaction with Law Pavilion Electronic Law Reports

This study examined perceived usefulness and ease of use as predictors of early-year lawyers’ satisfaction with Law Pavilion Electronic Law Reports (LPELR). Descriptive survey design was adopted and questionnaire was the instrument used to collect data. Total population sampling was adopted to select sample size. A total of 300 copies of questionnaires were administered on the respondents. However, only 248 copies were returned completely filled and validated for the study. The Cronbach alpha reliability for the study is 0.782. It was found that there is strong positive relationship between perceived ease of use and perceived satisfaction and that there is positive relationship between perceived usefulness and perceived satisfaction. The study findings show that electronic law reports are easy to use and useful for early-year lawyers in their legal research. The study concludes that, as much as the law profession is conservative in nature, the use of e-law reports is making inroads to the profession. It was recommended that technical service provision by LPELR should be improved significantly. Above all, electronic law reports licensors should ensure that task importance of electronic law reports is given utmost consideration when they are designing the system qualities of e-law reports.

Integration of Information System Success Model (ISSM) and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM): Proposing Students’ Satisfaction with University Web Portal Model

Background of the study: The web portal is a tool that has been adopted by universities to manage data and information of students and faculty. The portal is an information system as it is driven by information. Purpose: The study proposes a model of students’ satisfaction with Web portal for the integration of Information System Success Model ISSM and Davis’ Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Method: The methodology adopted for this study is the critical review of literature that borders on the constructs and/or variables embedded in ISSM and TAM. Findings: The study theorizes that information quality, service quality and system quality and perceived usefulness individually determine students’ satisfaction of a Web portal. The study also predicts that all of these variables compositely determine the students’ satisfaction of university Web. Conclusion: The study established that the “mandatory use” of Web portal does not primarily translate to students’ satisfaction with the portal. This is because whether users are satisfied or not, the onus is still on them to come back to use the portal.
Information Sharing and Evaluation as Determinants of Spread of Fake News on Social Media among Nigerian Youths: Experience from COVID-19 Pandemic

This study examined information sharing and evaluation as determinants of the spread of fake news among Nigerian youths on social media using experience from COVID-19 pandemic. A descriptive survey design was adopted for the study and a Web-based questionnaire (Google Forms) was used to collect data for the study. The total responses of 278 were collected from the participants, which represents the unit of analysis. The finding of the study revealed that most Nigerian youths used Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and Instagram to share information on COVID-19. However, only a few Nigerians used Linkedln and other types of social media to share information on COVID-19. It was also found that building a relationship with social media communities, enjoyment and risk taking, and political inclination influence the sharing behavior of Nigerian youths during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results show that social media handle/page found sharing of fake news on COVID-19 especially on the treatment, vaccines numbers of cases and symptoms. The study concludes that there is a positive relationship between information evaluation and the spreading of fake news on COVID-19 among Nigerians. Information sharing and evaluation should be done with the utmost level of objectivity and sincerity.
Frequency of use and awareness of electronic databases by university lecturers in South-west, Nigeria

The objectives of the study were to: i. examine the extent of awareness of electronic databases for teaching and research by university lecturers in South-west, Nigeria; ii. identify the means through which awareness of electronic databases are created; and iii. determine the frequency at which university lecturers in South-west, Nigeria, use electronic databases. The study adopted the descriptive research design of a correlational type. The population comprised 10,452 lecturers in fifteen public universities in South-west, Nigeria from which a sample size of 836 was drawn using a multi-stage sampling procedure. Questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics at 0.05 level of significance. Findings of the study revealed that university lecturers in South-west, Nigeria are aware of the usefulness of most of the electronic databases for teaching and research; university libraries in South-west, Nigeria use different promotional methods to create awareness of the usefulness of databases; and the frequency at which University lecturers in South-west, Nigeria use electronic databases was very low. It can be concluded from the study that the frequency at which university lecturers in South-west, Nigeria, use electronic databases is very low. It is therefore recommended that university libraries should expand their library orientation programmes.
