- ItemPragmatic Trends in Arabice Linguistic Heritage(Journal of Arabic Linguistics Tradition, 2009) Tajudeen YusufUpon examining Arabic grammatical and linguistic works, it becomes apparent that some Arab linguists had addressed what is known in Modern Linguistics as "pragmatics," especially in the field of rhetoric. This study investigates and highlights the roots of pragmatics in Arabic Medieval writings and attempts to uncover specific authors' contributions. Focus here is on the works of five traditional authors: Al-Jāhidh, Al-‘Askari, Al-Jurjāni, Al-Sakkāki, and Hāzim Al-Qartājanni. From a pragmatic perspective, some modern linguists such as Leech claim that in order to understand human communication and expression, a number of factors inevitably need to be considered. These often include one's own knowledge about social distance, social status between the speakers involved, cultural knowledge such as politeness, and linguistic knowledge (explicit and implicit). Although pragmatics is a relatively new branch of linguistics, a comparison between modern theories of pragmatics and the early works of some Arab scholars shows that there is a clear indication that Arab and modern linguists share some common theoretical and philosophical opinions on the foundations and applications of lexical semantics and pragmatics. It is obvious that some Arab scholars had addressed the importance of employing the linguistic context as well as the situational context in the interpretation of a text or an expression if a deeper and generally more reasonable account of human language behavior is sought. Arab authors had also addressed how the transmission of meaning depends not only on the linguistic knowledge of the speaker and listener, but also on the context of the utterance, knowledge about the status of those involved, and the inferred intent of the speaker. Moreover, their views on communicative acts or speech acts are not limited to their linguistic and rhetorical works; the importance of linguistic and non-linguistic components in interpreting communications is widely discussed in their works dealing with juristic, exegetical, and other studies.

- ItemDOMESTICATION OF ARABIC PROSE IN NIGERIA(2012) Muhammed Yunusa JamiuProse is not alien to Arabic writings of Nigerian authorship. There is,however, preponderance of poems in Arabic writings of Nigerian descent.That poetry is more embraced could be due to many factors, chief amongwhich is that it is easy to memorize. The metric and rhythmic nature ofArabic poem coupled with lyrical tendencies of many Nigerians make poemeasy for them to compose. The musical attributes of poetry make it a veryefficient means of disseminating message; hence the huge reliance on it byearly scholars of Arabic for their teachings. It is also a historical fact thatpoetry preceded prose in germinating in every human society. Anotherimportant reason that endeared poetry to the ancient writers was that theywere more in contact with poetic works of the Arabs than prosaic materials.The themes of ancient Arabic writings both poetry and prose, were almostsynonymous in the sense that they were didactic, meant to teach religiousrituals. Many works of the forerunners in using Arabic language attest to thisas we can see in the preface to the famous Ihya' us-Sunnah of Uthman binFodio, where he stated that his intention was only to revive the prophetictraditions. In other words, many of the prosaic works of the early scholarswere confined to religious issues. This has made it very uncommon to findArabic writings that were principally aimed at discussing other themes apartfrom religious matters.The emergence of Shaykh Adam Abdullahi Al-Ilory brought aboutreform and transformation of Arabic prosaic writings in Nigeria. The concernof this paper therefore, is the study of selected themes from Al-Ilory's worksin his efforts to domesticate Arabic prose writing. The paper is divided intofive sections namely introduction; short biography of Al-Ilory; synopsis of the selected works; analysis of the works and conclusion.
- Itemالتعليم العربي في كليات التربية في نيجيريا: مشاكل وحلول(Journal of Academic Society for Arabic alsngusge and Literature In Nigeria, (ASALLIN), 2012) Alaso, Salih Jum'ah M.اللغة العربية في المجتمع النيجيري لها أهمية قصوي كلغة الدين، والتاريخ، والثقافة، والإقتصاد، والسياسة، والعلاقات الدولية، وغيرها، ولهذا اهتم بتعلم وتعليمها وتأسيس مراكز تعلمها أفراد وجماعات منذ زمن قديم، ثم الحكومات النيجيرية في الآونة الأخيرة. والعربية في نيجيريا اليوم تدرس في المؤسسات التعليمية الخصوصية والحكومية على المستويين الأدنى(الابتدائي والاعدادي والثانوي) والأعلى(في الكليات والجامعات)، والهدف العام من تعليم اللغة العربية وتعلمها في نيجيريا إلي جانب كونها لغة الدين هو اكتساب مهارات اللغة في جميع نواحيها، وذلك لتمكن الدارس من استعمالها كلغة أجنبية وليست كلغة ثانية، إذ اللغة الثانية على حد قول الدرويش1هي اللغة التي يتعلمها المرء بعد إتقانه لغته الأولى لاستعمالها في الحياة اليومية وفي المعاملة الرسمية كالإنجليزية في نيجيريا، بينما اللغة الأجنبية هي اللغة التي يتعلمها المرء إضافة إلي لغته الأولى دون أن تكون مستخدمة في الحياة اليومية الرسمية خارج المدرسة، والدارس لا يستخدمها للتخاطب إلا إذا أتيحت له فرصة ذلك بأن يلتقي بمتحدثها الأصلي أو دارس مثله. فتدريس اللغة العربية في المؤسسات التعليمية النيجيرية عامة وفي كليات التربية خاصة لا تخرج عن الأهداف العامة من تدريس اللغة الأجنبية إذ هي تمكين النيجيريين الاتصال الفعال والمثمر بالناطقين باللغة العربية من العرب وغيرهم، وذلك لتطوير المجال الاقتصادي والسياسي والثقافي وغيره بين نيجيريا والعالم العربي. إلا أن ما نراه في كثير من خريجي هذه المؤسسات عامة وكليات التربية خاصة لا يشهد لذلك، ومن المؤسف جدا أن كثيرا من طلاب اللغة العربية بعد قضاء المدة المحددة ونجاح المواد المقررة لا يجيدون حتى القراءة إلا القليل منهم، وذلك لما بكتنف إجراء إعدادهم من المعوقات، ولهذا تحاول هذه الورقة النظر في هذه المعوقات لتشخص الداء وتصف الدواء، حتى يكون في النهاية المدح للمدرسين والطلاب والمخططين للغة العربية في كليات التربية خاصة وفي المؤسسات التعليمية العليا الأخرى في نيجيريا.

- ItemThe Quality Attributes of Women as Contained in Nana Asmau's Poems of Elegy(2012-11) Hamzat Abdulraheem; Jamiu Yunusa MuhammadUntil very recently, women were not accorded enviable status in the society.This assertion was not peculiar to Africa or developing societies alone but,even the most advanced communities of the world. Women were considered to be not suitable for any position of responsibility even in the most civilized communities. In some cultures,women were allowed to engage in domestic chores alone and deemed not fit to pursuit anything outside this traditional role. This conception of unsuitability of women for any high endeavour was very common place. After a lengthy period of non-recognition,however,things started changing.History is replete with many successful women in virtually every field of human endeavours. With the eye-catching status women etched for themselves in the annals of time, none is comparable to the enviable intellectual height attained by Nana Asmau bin Uthman bin Fodio. This paper does not intend to go into details of Nana Asmau's life or her inputs to intellctualism. The concern is only to present her depiction of quality features of women in her own time as contained in some of her elegies

- ItemNativization of Arabic Loans in Baatonum(Nigerian Association of Teachers of Arabic Language and Literature, 2013) Aliyu Okuta AhmadThe contribution of Arabic language towards the development of many languages cannot be over emphasized. As one of the eight most widely spoken languages in the world (according UN report), Arabic has over the years been a major force in enriching the lexicons of several languages in Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa. Many studies have been conducted on Arabic loan words in languages such as English, Spanish, Mandingo, Hausa, Yoruba, Fulfulde etc. This present paper focuses on the influence of Arabic on Baatonum language with particular emphasis to loan words. It also examines the level of nativization of the loan words in the recipient language. The study adopts the descriptive research method in analyzing the data which was collected from the authors experience as a native speaker of Baatonum in the course of interpersonal conversations with other native speakers. The findings from the study reveal that Baatonum has borrowed quite a number of Arabic lexical item which have since become part of Baatonum’s Lexicon. It also shows that most of the borrowed words have gone through certain phonological modifications since they must be pronounced to suit the linguistic pattern of the receiving language. The paper finally recommends that future researchers focus on Baatonum-Arabic linguistic relations to reveal more about the Arabic loans in Baatonum. - Itemدراسة تقابلية بين أصوات اللغة العربية ولغة باتونم(Arabic Unit, Department of Languages and Linguistics, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, 2013) Aliyu Okuta Ahmadإنّ الدراسة التقابلية في علم اللغة الحديث دراسة تقوم بالمقارنة بين اللغتين أو أكثر لبيان أوجه التشابه والاختلاف بين اللغات بغية تسهيل الصعوبات والمشكلات التي يواجهها الدارسون للغة أجنبية من جانب، واعداد المواد التعليمية لتدريس اللغات الأجنبية. والبحث الحالي يهدف إلى تقابل الصوتي بين اللغتين العربية وباتونم لإبراز أوجه التشابه الاختلاف بينهما وإيجاد طريق لتسهيل الصعوبات والمشكلات التي يواجهها طلاب اللغة العربية من أبناء باتونُــــــمْ من حيث الأصوات العربية. ولتحقيق هذا الهدف، يستعين الباحث في الدراسة بالمنهجين الوصفي والمقارن لتحليل التشابه والاختلاف الصوتي بين اللغتين. اكتشف البحث وجود التشابه بين اللغتين في بعض صوامت وصوائت ووجود الاختلاف في بعضها، كما اكتشف أنّ اللغة العربية تفردت بصوامت، وتفردت لغة باتونُــــمْ بصوامت وصوائت لا وجود لها في اللغة العربية، فيجد الطلاب صعوبة في نطق الأصوات العربية التي لاتوجد في لغة باتــــــونُـــمْ.
- ItemNigerian Drama in Arabic: Between Indigenization and Perfo6(Literary Society of Nigeria, 2013) Aliyu Okuta AhmadThis paper is a study of Arabic drama in Nigeria, with particular emphasis on the extent of indigenization and performance of this aspect of literary production. Drama as a type of literature, received a lot of attention, starting from the classical Greek Tragedies to the plays of major dramatists such as William Shakespeare, Moliere, Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe and others. It is designed to ‘delight and instruct’ and written primarily to be performed. In ancient Arabic literature, drama is not known; it only appeared in modern Arabic literature during the second half of the nineteenth century as a result of the strong relationship between Arabic and European literatures. During the periods that preceded the advent of drama among the Arabs, poetry and prose flourished. The situation is not different in Nigeria as Arabic drama of Nigerian authorship appeared much later in this current century. The past ten centuries (1000-1999) witnessed remarkable contribution by Nigerians to Arabic literature in the areas of poetry and prose. Today, while reading through Arabic dramas of Nigerian authorship, one quickly guesses that the play is Nigerian, as a mental picture of the Nigerian society comes vivid; but whether or not Arabic drama in Nigeria is fully indigenized and serves its purpose, is the area of contention of this paper. It argues that much has not been done in the area of performance, thereby literary genre.
- ItemInstances of Quranic analysis using Arabic linguistic textual standards(Journal of Arts and Humanities (USA: Maryland Institute of Research MIR), 2013-07-08) MURITALA YAHYA TOYINThe aim of this paper is to highlight some instances of the Quranic Analysis in reference to the modern rules of linguistic textual standards and study the practical indications of the cohesive devices in the analysis of Quranic Arabic texts. Using the descriptive and analytical methods, the research treats the segments of the devices which are reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction and lexical cohesion as they are all traceable in the classical Arabic works and the interpretations made on the Quranic Arabic Texts. The paper elaborates on the textual analysis in the language of the Glorious Qur’an in terms of its roles in the deduction of Islamic legal rulings. Likewise, it treats the points of similarities and differences between the various Arabic linguistic analyses which constitute Traditional and Modern methods of textual structuring as related to the Qur’an. The study strikes a balance between the two analytical paradigms and widens the scope of understanding the Quranic message in the modern age. It offers insights into the possible Educational development in the learning of Arabic Language for religious purpose. The paper establishes the importance of analytical specimen from such aspects with attention to the rules guiding the interpretation of the Glorious Quran according to the methods and principles of the early scholars of Islamic Sciences. Finally, it concludes with suggestions and recommendations towards the resolution of the challenges faced in the contemporary Arabic Quranic Learning practices.
