    Contemporary Arabic Novelists and Social Responsibility: a Peep into AlHijri’s Al-Sayyid Al-Raees

    Novel writing in Arabic language is a contemporary effort in Arabic literature of Nigerian authorship. This, however, is not strange because of the fact that the genre in global Arabic literature is equally not very old. It is however note worthy how writers use Arabic in purely literary ways to convey social messages. Novel writing, most especially, is being explored to champion the discharge of the responsibility thrust on writers as shapers of the society. One of such writers is an upcoming novelist, Hamid al-Hijri. This paper aims at analyzing the positive roles modern writers in Arabic play to socialize their readers and bring them to the realm of wider awareness devoid of religious jingoism, using Al-Sayyid Al-Raees as a case study.

    The Influence of Arabic on Nigerian Literature: a study of selected works of Abubakar Imam in Hausa

    The heritage of a people is, without doubt, the bedrock of their identity. The sheer size of the Northern part of Nigeria makes it a very important part of the country. This vast region has been having a common identity forged by literacy in the Arabic language. For many centuries before the coming of the imperialists, Arabic provided universal understanding among people of the Northern Nigeria. It was so important that even the imperial agents studied Arabic language in order to penetrate the culture of the people of the area they wanted to colonize. When the foreign power eventually succeeded in enthroning its own language as the official language, Arabic still remains very visible not only as a religious language but also as a springboard for literary endeavors in both local and foreign languages of the North. This paper therefore intends to study the influence of Arabic on the Nigerian Literature using Magana Jari Ce and Ruwan Bagaja by the renown Hausa writer, late Alhaji Abubakar Imam, as a case study. The paper is divided into: introduction, short biography of Abubakar Imam, Arabic influence on selected stories, general analysis of the stories, conclusion and recommendation.

    Literature is a creative work that depicts, in its contents, all that is available in the environment. An incontrovertible fact is the say that the environment has appreciable impacts on literary works. The fact that ecocriticism is a relatively new concept does not mean it is totally strange to Islamic literary studies. Based on this, it will not be out of place to look into Arabic literary works of Northern Nigeria authorship from the lens of ecocriticism given the strength and length of Islam and Arabic literature in the region. Arabic language is the first language of reading and writing in Nigeria as a whole with stronger presence in the North because civilization in the region, to a large extent, is basically Islamic. It is therefore very relevant to look into literary works of the region with a view to studying the ecological features in them. This paper therefore sets out to look into how the literary works in Arabic from the region accord the environment necessary importance. The Qur’an and Sunnah that are principal foundations of Arabic studies are the necessary pillars guiding the study. This study discovered that: ecostudy is not alien to scholars in Arabic in Northern Nigeria; the importance of ecological balance for the maintenance of friendly nature is well established in Islam; creative writers in Arabic in Northern Nigeria, past and present, accord sustaining friendly climate for the benefit of all importance in their works. The study recommended that there is need for expansion in the attention given to ecological issues in Arabic literary works of Northern Nigeria authorship.
