Abstract
In line with the key emerging industries in Nigeria is the 'tourism and hospitality industry’ as one of the service industries. The Hospitality and Tourism industry is a large and complex industry that is of an enormous economic importance to Nigeria.With the national plans of economy diversification in mind, this paper aims to discuss the impact of practical courses on students’ learning by taking the idea of tourism and hospitality industry as a practical oriented discipline. This paper also examines study of tourism and hospitality in Nigerian universities and other higher institutions of learning,the universities studying tourism and hospitality, the problems these universities are facing, the recommendations and the importance of practical training to the students. Data concerning this research was gotten from secondary sources,such as journals and internet. Practical courses are the hands-on activities by which students learn how to deal with the tasks in real workplace. Practical activities related to the application of knowledge would provide the opportunity of first-hand learning for students. Practical programs are considered essential in universities and institutions specialized in tourism and hospitality studies.
