- ItemA Clinical Approach to the Analysis of Selected Three-Year-Old Pupils' Renditions(All Nations University Journal of Applied Thoughts, 2021-05-10) Gobir, M.T.Sound perception is pivotal to language acquisition and usage, and it is the bedrock for the display of linguistic knowledge in every individual. However, misperception of sounds and sound production anomalies can be language-based or cognitive oriented. The aim of this study was to assess the utterances of selected three-year-old pupils from a clinical perspective. The study basically adopts a survey research approach. Using the purposive sampling technique and the participatory observation method, twenty utterances of kindergarten pupils were recorded, transcribed and analysed both perceptually and acoustically. This study adapted a blend of the clinical phonological and clinical psycholinguistic approaches for the analysis of the selected pupils’ utterances. The results of the assessment were that even though speech disturbance characterise the language of the pupils, gender difference plays a role in cognitive and linguistic development. The female pupils are found to be less deficient than their male counterparts as their word-realisations are more appropriate and correspond more with the superstrate transcriptions. Also, in spite of the differences in the cognitive abilities of the pupils, they unconsciously adopt simplification procedures to cover up their speech deficiencies. It has been recommended that teachers have a key role to play to facilitate learning by both genders of learners in the classroom by varying their teaching methods and selecting instructional materials carefully.
- ItemA Comparative Analysis of Muhmmadu Buhari and Alexander Boris Johnson’s Appreciation and Sensitisation Speeches on Coronavirus Pandemic(University of Lagos Press, 2017) Abdul SunokperaThis paper examines the discourse of coronavirus pandemic by appraising the appreciation and sensitisation speeches of the British Prime Minister and the president of Nigeria. The outbreak of coronavirus pandemic triggered the production of different types of texts as discourses from different parts of the world. The majority of these discourses seek to proffer solution to the global pandemic. The appreciation and sensitisation speeches of Alexander Boris Johnson and that of Muhammadu Buhari are no exception. The two speeches were divided into eight texts and analysed using a Functional-Semiotic Discourse Analysis as applied by Daramola (2008) and Appraisal Theory as theoretical underpinnings. After the analysis of semiotic and appraisal resources in the two speeches using the two linguistic theories, it was concluded that different linguistic resources drawn from different sources by different speakers could be deployed to perform different communicative functions in order to achieve the same communicative ends.
- ItemA Comparative Analysis of the Philosophy of Ebenezer Obey’s Songs and the Yorùbá Ifá Literary Corpus(2021) Hakeem Olawale & Femi AbiodunThis paper builds on the existing studies in the philosophical dimension of Ifá literary corpus to provide insights into the philosophical nature of Ebenezer Obey’s songs. This was with a view to exploring the philosophical paradigm in Obey’s songs and the Ifá literary corpus. The study adopts descriptive analysis for its design. The descriptive method engages a comparative content analysis of Ebenezer Obey’s Jùjú music and the Yorùbá Ifá Literary Corpus. Three questions guided the discussions in the study: (i) what is philosophical about Ebenezer Obey’s songs? (ii) how does Ebenezer Obey relay his philosophical messages? and (iii) what are the philosophical import of Jùjú music compared with the Yorùbá Ifá Literary Corpus? The study, which is text-based; analyses ten purposively selected albums of Ebenezer Obey’s Jùjú songs, and through comparison, argues that the narratives of the music play a mediating role in explicating social (re)construction of what homage, destiny, reality, wisdom, love and enmity mean to the Yorùbá people. Ebenezer Obey’s albums give credence to the philosophy of the Yorùbá people about predestination and metaphysical understanding of Yorùbá text within the conceptual framework of Yorùbá Ifá literary corpus. Through storytelling and use of proverbs, Obey’s songs establish questions about existence and ethics of life when compared with Yorùbá Ifá Literary Corpus. The paper draws conclusion in the fact that Jùjú music and the Yorùbá literary corpus have strong philosophical and ethical positions.

- ItemA Critical Discourse Analysis of Political Interview in Nigerian News Media(Journal of Languages, Linguistics and Literary Studies, 2023-05-23) Aliyu Uthman AbdulkadirSeveral studies have been carried out on political discourse using different linguistic approaches of Pragmatics, Critical Discourse Analysis, Stylistics as well as implicature. However, little attention has been given to the blend of Critical Discourse Analysis and rhetoric as a means to unravel different ideological stances in political discourse. Thus, this paper investigated how ideological beliefs of individuals or groups were conveyed through linguistic expressions to manipulate those of others in political interviews of Nigerian politicians. A total of two (2) interviews conducted by Channels Television were randomly selected. The data for the study were video files downloaded from the official YouTube page of the Channel Tv station and were transcribed so as to draw out relevant extracts. van Dijk’s 2006 socio cognitive aspects of Critical Discourse Analysis and rhetoric were used as its theoretical framework. Findings revealed that ideology is an individual’s perception or experience of the world. It also revealed that the interviewees in the selected interviews deployed language as a strategy of domination and supremacy by exploiting lexical items and strong imperatives which allow them to impose their views on others. Commonly, it was found that they created asymmetrical power relations of privileged ‘we’, ‘us’ and less privileged ‘they’, ‘them’ through positive self-presentation of us and negative other presentation of them. It was also revealed that certain rhetorical and ideological strategies such as actor description, polarisation, burden, categorisation, comparison, consensus, populism, vagueness and appeal to emotions among others present in the selected political interviews are implicitly used to project different ideological positions of the politicians. Keywords: Critical discourse, Ideology, Politics, Power, Political interview Biographical notes: Aliyu Uthman Abdulkadir holds a Masters Degree in English Language from Kwara State University, Malete. He is a Lecturer in the Department of English, Kwara State University, Malete, Kwara State, Nigeria.

- ItemA critical discourse analysis of selected print media reports on insurgency in Nigerian newspapers(2023) IBRAHIM OMOLABIInsufficient studies have considered critical studies to explore diverse discourse patterns that arise from print media reportage of insurgent actions in the country. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to examine an investigation of the insurgency coverage in Nigerian media through the Critical Discourse Approach with a view to identifying the various ideological roles present in the coverage. van Dijk's (2006) Socio-cognitive approach to Critical Discourse Analysis was adopted as the theoretical framework for this study. The study used a qualitative method to analyse twenty (29) reports purposively. Data were selected from three National newspapers, namely: The Punch, This Day and The Guardian. Findings revealed the presence of six discursive strategies which are labeling, number game, evidentiality, lexicalisation, metaphor and categorisation. These strategies are utilised in news reports to construct polarity as well as social inequality and bias. This paper also revealed that the presupposition of the ideologies found is to increase the information deliveries and acceptance in the written reports of the insurgent actions in Nigeria. Most importantly, the ideologies are used to present two major groups, namely the in-group and the out-group. While the in-group refers to Nigerian citizens who were portrayed as victims and innocent, the out-groups refers to the various insurgency groups who bring about tears, pains and bloodletting among the Nigerian people. The study concludes that newspapers are often bias especially in their reportage of insurgent operations as revealed in the data analysis.

- ItemA critical-pragmatic study of the representation of female gender in Nigerian Hip-hop music(JAHCA, 2023) Ibrahim OmolabiHip-hop music has become a popular trend in Nigeria, as it enjoys a high level of acceptance among the Nigerian youths. Thus, this study examines the representation of female gender in hip hop music and the messages the music conveyed about female gender; it also unravels the hidden pragmatic meanings behind the content of the music. Nine (9) data from the lyrics of selected hip hop music were randomly selected and analysed using Mey's (2001) pragmatic act theory. This paper adopted a qualitative approach which is due of the nature of the data that was analysed and the approach that was used in analysing it. Findings revealed a dominant portrayal of slangy expressions suggesting sexual overtimes, female as mere edibles, women as sexual stimulant, seductive dance steps, and indecent dressing in the lyrical contents sampled. The paper also revealed that the implicit practs of exposing, seducing, luring and proposing were used in the data to show the role females play as characters in hip-hop music videos. The paper concludes that the use of vulgar expressions in the description of these female characters portrayed them mainly as sex commodities and sex workers, this questions the dignity of the African woman and the virtues she is expected to project to her fellow female folk, home and abroad. - ItemA Linguistic Stylistic Study of Selected AbdulRasheed Na’allah’s Ilorin Praise Poetry(2021) Ibrahim OmolabiLinguistic stylistics explores the linguistic features of a text; it is primarily concerned with the use of language and its effect in a text. This study is aimed at analysing the language structure/system of Abdulrasheed Na’Allah’s Ilorin praise poetry in order to render a linguistic description that is, identifying the linguistic features of Na’Allah’s poems and describing how they deviated from the known rules to create effect. The study purposively selected three (3) poems from the collection of Ilorin praise poetry. Some aspects of stylistic features at the lexical, syntactic and semantic levels were adopted in the analysis of the data collected from a selection of words and structures in the poems. Findings reveal that the poet incorporates certain marked pattern devices such as imagery, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, etc. to enrich the language of the poem in a bid to show prominence of his intended message to the readers through effective transmission of ideas and message. It was also revealed that meaning potentials were used in a manner that give prominence to his choice of language in a way that the description and representation of ideas used were distinctively made explicit for example, the poet used metaphor to draw attention of the reader to the despicable condition of Ilorin markets and heroes, and also used to give clearness and liveliness to things being praised. It was also found that the poet made use of repetition of same words or phrases at beginning, in close and end of successive stages as in the case of anaphora, epizeux and symploce to secure emphasis and draw the readers’ attention to certain issues. The study concludes that the linguistic choice and pattern in a work of art determines the style of language use; therefore, language is a powerful tool in the hands of poets; they manipulate the tool to suit their purposes.
- ItemA Literary Appraisal of Poets as Historians(2016) Agbaje, J.B & Aransi, A.OThe Yoruba believe that our past and present histories are being preserved for future generation. Hence, the Yoruba genres can be used to trace the history of a set of people and one occurrence or the other. Various genres of the Yoruba are embodiment of their history. In essence, Yoruba poets are seen as historians or repertoire of knowledge. All the stories which are embedded in Yoruba oral literature are seen in form of allusion. Yoruba orature helps to remember important cultural information and history of the Yoruba people. It is pertinent to note that the role of orature in the construction and reconstruction of history is remarkable as seen in the following genres of Yoruba oral literature such as alámọ̀, ìjálá, ẹ̀sàand orin. This paper concludes that in the above mentioned genres, like other Yoruba genres, poets play the roles of historians and that our past and present histories are preserved for future generation.
- ItemA Pragma-Crafting Study of President Muhammadu Buhari’s 2022 Democracy Day Speech(2022) Ibrahim OmolabiA Pragma-Crafting Study of President Muhammadu Buhari’s 2022 Democracy Day Speech Political speeches have been studied from different perspectives and using different ways of analyses. However, existing studies on these political speeches have largely been focused on interviews, inaugurals, democracy speeches, media interviews, etc. using the tools of speech acts, pragmatic acts, critical studies and stylistics. Despite these, there are still insufficient studies of analyses of political discourse using Achoea’s Pragma Crafting Theory as a new paradigm of speech act theory. This paper, therefore examines a pragma-crafting study of President Muhammadu Buhari’s 2022 Democracy Day Speech with a view to seeing how politicians use language to win the support of the masses. The speech was downloaded from the internet, and a total of eight (8) extracts were drawn from the transcript extracted from NTA Station and were rigorously analysed using a random sampling technique. The speech systematically uses Pragma crating theory as the theoretical framework underpinning the study. Findings revealed that democracy speeches are structured in different ways to perform some indirect speech acts of promising, and asserting facts about their integrity. The study also revealed that another notable feature is the use of inclusive language, where President Buhari consistently used pronouns such as “we” and “us” to create a sense of unity and shared responsibility with his target audience. The paper concludes that by understanding the pragma-crafting features employed in this speech will further give an understanding of how political rhetoric is shaped by cultural, historical and personal factors in political settings.
