- ItemAccess to and use of public library services in Nigeria(http://sajlis.journals.ac.za doi:10.7553/83-1-1639, 2017) Abdulsalam Abiodun Salman1; Tinashe Mugwisi; Bertha Jantine MostertThe study investigated the factors hampering access to and use of public library (urban and rural) services in Nigeria. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods were employed through the administration of a questionnaire to users in both urban and rural public libraries in Nigeria and conducting interviews with the public librarians. The objectives of the study centred on identifying awareness and utilisation of library services, including utilisation patterns. The study also sought to investigate levels of satisfaction among users as well as make recommendations for improved service delivery. The population was the registered public library user group from which 394 users were randomly sampled from twelve purposively selected libraries – two from each of the six regions. The respondents were mainly an educated male user group representing a wide variety of occupations. Awareness of services was restricted to a few services, and accessibility to the major library services was found to be a challenge to many. Utilisation patterns indicated infrequent use of only a few services, and very low satisfaction with what is being offered. Challenges identified included unawareness of services, too few copies of materials and lack of information literacy skills. Recommendations included the enhancement of community participation in decision-making concerning services, that relevant and enough materials be supplied, and that effective marketing be employed to improve access and to promote services among users and potential users.

It adopted the survey research design with four objectives to guide the study. The population of the study comprises 27 librarians of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) Library. The data for the study was collected using the structure questionnaire and the census sampling technique was used since all the study population were used. The instrument yielded a 100% response rate. Data collected were analysed using the descriptive statistics which showed the frequency counts, mean scores and standard deviations, while the corresponding hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance with the chi-square inferential method. The findings revealed that library services necessary for automation in academic libraries by librarians include acquisition, circulation, cataloguing and classification, etc. It also showed that the facilities needed for automation of academic library services are computers, printers, scanners, effective internet services, etc. The study further revealed that the status of automation of academic library services in the academic library under study is not effective. The study showed the problems of automation of academic library services in Abia State to include inadequate funding of academic libraries, inadequate ICT skills of librarians, por internet access, etc. However, the test of hypothesis revealed that there is a relationship between automation and effectiveness of library services in academic libraries by librarians in Abia State. Consequently, the study conclusively recommends, among other things, that management of academic libraries should provide adequate funding to academic libraries to enable plan and execute effective automation of library services in academic libraries.
- ItemARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ADOPTION AND UTILIZATION BY LIBRARIANS IN UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES IN KWARA STATE, NIGERIA(DigitalCommons@University of Nebraska - Lincoln, 2023) Abdrahman .A. MOUSTAPHA (CLN/NLA) & Ibrahim .O. YUSUF (CLN/NLA)The study investigated how librarians working in various university libraries in Kwara State, Nigeria, adopt and use artificial intelligence. The study raised four research goals as well as four research questions. A descriptive survey method and random sampling techniques with 450 randomly selected librarians from Kwara State Universities, Nigeria, were used for the research. Five research assistants were trained on how to contact respondents and secure their consent before distributing the structured questionnaire designed by the researcher, who assisted in the tool distribution process. The researcher was able to retrieve 410 copies of the 450 questionnaires that were given to the respondents. However, the rate of return was 91%, which is a respectable amount. A self-designed questionnaire was used to elicit responses from the respondents, and a simple percentage was adapted for data analysis. The results showed that there was little adoption of AI in university libraries in Kwara State, Nigeria. The research also reveals that security scanning devices at the entrances and exits of university libraries are the most prevalent AI systems, while other AI systems such as bots, chatbots, face recognition, touch recognition, RFID technologies, humans, AI classification tools, machine-readable catalogs, and not smart AI features are still missing from the Kwara State University libraries. A self-designed questionnaire was used to elicit responses from the respondents, and a simple percentage ratio was adapted for data analysis. The findings revealed that AI has received minimal attention in university libraries in Kwara State, Nigeria. According to the study, the most common AIs are security scanning equipment at university library entrances and exits, followed by robotics, chatbots, face recognition, and touch recognition. RFID technologies, humanoids, AI classification tools, machine-readable catalogs, and AI smart features are still lacking in Kwara State's university libraries. The results of this study also indicate that librarians in a university library are aware of the many ways in which artificial intelligence can be applied to provide services. The results of the study indicate that obstacles to adoption include significant disruption caused by artificial intelligence in traditional library services, a lack of skills and a need for training prior to adoption, irregular power supply, and a lack of adequate infrastructure for adoption, among other problems. The study recommended the need to organize training for librarians to enhance their skills in using artificial intelligence to provide services, and the university administration and libraries should commit and provide the necessary support for the adoption of artificial intelligence by providing the necessary infrastructure to ensure its rapid implementation.

- ItemCharacterization of biodiesel from alkaline refinement of waste cooking oil(International Annals of Science,, 2020-09-04) Mustapha, A.O, Adebisi, A. A and Olanipekun, B.OThe waste cooking oil (WCO) is a low cost and prospective feedstock with no competitive food uses for biodiesel production, but the yield and quality have been greatly affected by impurities. This study examined the chemical and fuel quality of biodiesel of both WCO and alkaline treated WCO. The transesterification process using the alkaline treated cooking oil (ACO) methanol and sodium hydroxide as catalyst followed the Association of Officials of Analytical Chemists (AOAC) techniques. The pH values between 7.27 and 8.65 were found for alkaline treated cooking methyl ester (ACME), alkaline treated cooking oil (ACO) and WCO. Density of ACME, ACO and WCO varied between 0.89 and 0.93 (g/cm3). The fatty acids found were benzoic acid (3.77%), octanoic acid (8.35%), and palmitic acid (75.02%) – most abundant. Comparison of results with the American Standard for Testing Materials (ASTM) values showed quality enhancements of ACO in physicochemical and fuel properties over WCO. The biodiesels from ACO have enhanced emulsification, fuel and free fatty acids qualities over the WCO, showing the refinement methodology of WCO has overall improvement in the biodiesel purity and quality against the previous conflicting reports.

While PPMC was employed to test the study's only null hypothesis, frequency counts and percentages were utilized to examine the data gathered for the five research topics. The survey indicated that the respondent had a high degree of job productivity. The study also found that majority of the respondents experience eye pain; backaches; headaches; blurred vision; and tiredness as the technostress symptoms while poor working conditions, work overload, lack of technical support, lack of technological competence and expertise, and technophobia are some of the causes of technostress to the respondents. The result further revealed that technostress affects job productivity of the respondents to some extent while technology-based training; getting adequate user-friendly software; staying healthy and eating proper dieting; effective time management; and taking frequent break are some of the ways of managing technostress by the respondents. The outcome also indicated a strong correlation between technological stress and the library staff's ability to do their jobs effectively. The study recommends that the management should organize technology-based training on the use of computer system, software and hardware for their staff which will help them to be more conversant with the use of the adopted ICTs which will make them less predisposed to experience technostress; and they should get adequate user-friendly software which will be easy for the staff to use without stressing themselves before completing a certain task.
- ItemCritical Issues in Cataloging and Classifying Arabic Books: a case study(DigitalCommons@University of Nebraska - Lincoln, 2021) Abdrahman .A. MOUSTAPHA (CLN, NLA) & Raihanat AHMAD (ALA)Cataloguing of Arabic materials in the library has posed great challenges for librarians especially the cataloguers who define the access factors to facilitate easy retrieval. The main hassle in cataloging Arabic books is identifying the part of a set of nouns and adjectives for the main entry selection. Usually, in an Arabic name, the name of his father or ancestors may be included with some adjective or one which suggests the area of birth. Cataloguers also face different issues with cataloging Arabic books in terms of the duration of the writer's name, the reversal of the call, the authors with different names, and the pronunciation of the names except, cataloguers may additionally face a hassle with e-book titles, prolonged titles, one-of-a-kind titles for the identical article, titles that don't represent the content material, and literary titles are not unusual problems in cataloging Arabic books. These challenges are to be addressed to make certain the uniformity and credibility of information in cataloging Arabic books. In reality, this paper intends to discuss and share the troubles of cataloging Arabic non-public names and titles of Arabic books as confronted via the cataloguers of the Kwara State University library. We wish that this effort will contribute to developing tips and requirements designed for Kwara State University Library, Nigeria, and to enhance the change of Islamic Statistics and Information within the Islamic globe.

- ItemHeavy Metal Uptake Responses in Plants Grown on Crude Oil-Polluted Soils as Prospects for Phytoremediation(African Journal of Applied Sciience and Environmental Management, 2020-07-06) OLAWEPO, GK; 1OGUNKUNLE, CO; 1FATOBA, PO; 1ANIMASAUN, DA; 2BENUWABOR, PO; 3DANZAKI, MMThe demand and utilization of petroleum products have re-energized its exploration and exploitation globally and this upsurge in world production, refining and distribution of petroleum products have brought with it various problems of environmental pollution, which have effects on the ecosystems. Twenty (24) polyethylene pots each containing 7 kg of sandy loam soil mixed with 50 ml of crude oil, were arranged in the Botanical garden of the University of Ilorin, Nigeria, to assess their ability to phytoextract heavy metals in Crude oil-polluted soil. Seeds of Amaranthus hybridus L., Tithonia diversifolia, Abelmoschus esculentus L. and Zea mays were sown in polyethylene containers containing 7 kg of contaminated or Control soil. The containers were arranged in a complete randomized design. Plants were left to grow for two months with regular watering. Plants were harvested, separated into roots and shoots and oven-dried to constant weight. The experimental plants have been able to reduce the concentration of Cu in both soils by about 45% to 85%, Cr in the soil by 92.08% to 96.72%, as the residual concentration varied between 66.00 mg/kg and 99.00 mg/kg, Cd in the soil was reduced to 4.00 mg/kg and 17 mg/kg which represented 96.8% and 86.4% reduction. Tithonia had the highest Pb reduction in crude oilpolluted soil. Ni concentration was reduced by 85.84% by Tithonia planted in crude oil-polluted soil, 94.59% by Amaranthus hybridus planted in Control soil. These show that all the test plants were good phytoextractors of the metals.
- ItemHeterogeneous Ensemble with Combined Dimensionality Reduction for Social Spam Detection(iJIM ‒ Vol. 15, No. 17, 2021, 2021) Abdulfatai Ganiyu Oladepo; Amos Orenyi Bajeh; Abdullateef Oluwagbemiga Balogun; Hammed Adeleye Mojeed; Abdulsalam Abiodun Salman; Abdullateef Iyanda BakoAbstract—Spamming is one of the challenging problems within social networks which involves spreading malicious or scam content on a network; this often leads to a huge loss in the value of real-time social network services, com- promise the user and system reputation and jeopardize users trust in the system. Existing methods in spam detection still suffer from misclassification caused by redundant and irrelevant features in the dataset as a result of high dimensional- ity. This study presents a novel framework based on a heterogeneous ensemble method and a hybrid dimensionality reduction technique for spam detection in micro-blogging social networks. A hybrid of Information Gain (IG) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) (dimensionality reduction) was implemented for the selection of important features and a heterogeneous ensemble consisting of Naïve Bayes (NB), K Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Logistic Regression (LR) and Repeated Incremental Pruning to Produce Error Reduction (RIPPER) classifi- ers based on Average of Probabilities (AOP) was used for spam detection. To empirically investigate its performance, the proposed framework was applied on MPI_SWS and SAC’13 Tip spam datasets and the developed models were eval- uated based on accuracy, precision, recall, f-measure, and area under the curve (AUC). From the experimental results, the proposed framework (Ensemble + IG + PCA) outperformed other experimented methods on studied spam datasets. Specifically, the proposed framework had an average accuracy value of 87.5%, an average precision score of 0.877, an average recall value of 0.845, an aver- age F-measure value of 0.872 and an average AUC value of 0.943. Also, the proposed framework had better performance than some existing approaches. Consequently, this study has shown that addressing high dimensionality in spam datasets, in this case, a hybrid of IG and PCA with a heterogeneous ensemble method can produce a more effective model for detecting spam contents.
