dc.description.abstract | The working dynamics of language in the production process of any movie cannot be underestimated. This is because language, in the form of dialogue gives meaning to the action seen on the screen. Without dialogue, the dramatic action of a film becomes meaningless or at the very least, difficult to understand. This paper examines the application of Yorùbá language in the production of Yorùbá films to find out whether the choice of Yorùbá language for these films is conscious and beneficial to the filmmakers, as well as ascertain the relationship of Yorùbá language to Yorùbá films. To do this, the paper employed a review method of selected literatures and movies in the selected areas with data analysis. The findings were that producers of Yorùbá films consciously use Yorùbá language in their work. The benefit of doing this is the popularity of the language and the wide audience base existing since the days of the Yorùbá Travelling Theatre Troupes. The relationship of Yorùbá language to Yorùbá films has therefore, become mutually beneficial to each other. The study also reveals that there is disconnect between the popularity of home video release and cinema box office. It therefore, concludes that concerted efforts need to be made to bridge this gap and suggest producers upgrade their production aesthetics to compete with foreign produced films that dominate the cinema box office. This will translate to commercial success for the producers and avail them better production values. | |
