Impact of sub-textual factors in the narratives of selected Nollywood films

| dc.description.abstract | Film is one of the significant avenues to examine and explore the foibles of man in a self deprecating manner without any morass of culpability. In film, whether it is the morbid fascination we see in the death of an antagonist, or the excitement generated by the sexual exploration of couples, once the lights are turned on and the credits roll, all our voyeuristic pleasures and thrills are over. No guilt, no remorse, no consequence. In Nigerian cinema space, however, there is a need for vigorous study of embedded ideology and cultural nuances that has made Nollywood films popular. This study, therefore, examined selected Nollywood films, with the objective of appraising the sub-textual factors that influence the narratives of Nigerian movies. In this process, the study adopted ideological analysis method to interrogate three randomly selected films. The findings were that improvisation, code-mixing and paralinguistic aesthetics are factors that impact Nollywood films. It concluded that some ideological and cultural derivatives within the framework of these films laid emphasis on oral tradition that leads to improvisation, colonial experience which results in code mixing and dramatic gestures culminating in paralinguistic aesthetics which makes them popular. The study therefore, suggests that some of these abstruse sub-textual factors within Nigerian cultural ideologies of Nollywood narratives are appreciated by the audience and encourage producers to continue reinforcing positive ones in their films. | |
