Legislative and Executive Relations in Nigeria

Abstract
This chapter examines the complex connection that exists between the legislative and executive branches in Nigeria, highlighting the conflicts as well as the collaboration that is necessary for efficient democratic governance. It draws attention to important issues such as legislative oversight, the balance of power and the executive branch's impact on legislative agendas. The chapter extensively uses secondary sources including scholarly publications and government records. The chapter emphasises how collaborative governance promotes efficient policy execution, seamless budgetary procedures, and more robust democratic institutions. In Nigeria, where tensions between the executive and legislature are common, cooperation between these branches can enhance governance outcomes. Mechanisms such as consultative leadership, liaison committees and shared policy frameworks are highlighted as tools for aligning their priorities. Political party discipline and conflict resolution strategies are discussed as ways to reduce disputes and foster cohesion. The benefits of collaboration include more efficient lawmaking, enhanced accountability and political stability, all of which improve public service delivery and national development.
