dc.description.abstract'History', in its classic usage, refers o the actual happening of the past or the narration of that happening. A narrative account of a historical event is posterior to the act of understanding, simply because to give an account of an event presupposes a prior understanding of it. It is history in the first sense rather than the second that is primarily associated with the process of understanding.
