Abstract
In a developing country like Nigeria, training and development of manpower resources is
highly needed in virtually all organizations in order to ensure improved performance and
effectiveness. The study assessed the effects of training on workers’ performance in Kano State
Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. The study made use of questionnaire
and interviews to obtain primary data. Secondary data was derived from Training
Participant’s Register. However, while the quantitative data was analysed using multiple
regression, the interview responses were thematically presented and analysed. Frederick
Herzberg’s Motivation Theory was used as theoretical framework for the study. From the
analyses of data, the study found that on-the-job training programmes have significantly
affected workers’ performance in Kano State Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy
Affairs. As depicted in table 1.5 the coefficient of “on-the-job training programmes” stood at
0.036 which is positive. More so, the coefficient of “off-the-job training programmes” stood
at 0.149 which is positive. This implies that off-the-job training programmes have significantly
affected workers’ performance in Kano State Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy
Affairs. In view of these findings, we recommend, among others, the need to conduct both on
the-job training programmes and off-the-job training programmes for workers in order to
achieve the improved performance for the attainment of the overall objectives of the Ministry.
