- ItemFinancial analysis of poultry production in Kwara State, Nigeria(Academic Journals, 2016-02-25) TM Yusuf,; SA Tiamiyu,; RO. AliyuThis study examined the economics of poultry production in Kwara State, Nigeria using budgetary and profit index analysis. Primary data were collected through a set of structured questionnaire from 80 registered poultry farmers using a systematic random sampling technique. The results of the study showed that 72.5% of the respondents were youth with the mean age of 38.7 years and 63.8% choose poultry farming as main occupation. Analysis of costs and returns revealed that poultry production is profitable in the study area. The gross income and net income for eggs production were found to be ₦4,062,422 and ₦1,255,965, respectively, while the gross and net incomes for broilers production were ₦1,683,209 and ₦499,187, respectively. The regression analysis showed that stock capacity, variable, and fixed costs including labour, feed, and equipment were the significant factors affecting poultry farm business in the study area. These costs increase as the size of the business increases. To achieve optimum output and maximise profit, poultry producers in the study area would have to stem down cost of production. Provision of technical education through extension agents would greatly help in achieving this lofty goal.

- ItemThe Effect of farmyard manure and urea on grain yield and agronomic characteristics of maize (Zea mays)(2022-06-30) AA Olowoake,; AI Afe,; JA Ojo,; TM Yusuf,; SK. Subair.Combining organic and inorganic fertilizer has been proved to be an effective and sustainable soil management strategy for increased crop yield and safe environment. Field experiments were conducted in two locations in Nigeria namely Malete and Shao during 2018 and 2019 seasons. This was to find out the efficacy of organic and inorganic fertilizer (including prilled and granular urea) and their various combinations on grain yield and agronomic characteristics of maize. The use of full dose of P and K + 75% N through Granular Urea + 25 % N through farmyard manure improved most of the soil chemical properties with high economic returns. It was concluded from the experiment that a combination of organic and inorganic fertilizers is an environmentally friendly practice and could lead to high yields and improve farmers’ income and their livelihoods.
- ItemTransforming Smallholder Farming in Nigeria through Off-Farm Employment(2016) TM Yusuf,; OL Ballogun,; SA. TiamiyuPoverty is one of the Nigeria’s policy challenges stalling all efforts to develop rural areas and transform agriculture. Although, poverty is an endemic problem in Nigeria, available evidence shows that rural areas in the country are the most affected. This study advocates off-farm employment for poverty reduction in the rural areas. An empirical investigation was carried out among farming households in Kwara State, Nigeria to analyze the potentials of off-farm employment in poverty reduction. Kwara state is among the six poorest states in Nigeria. A fourstage sampling technique was employed to select 200 farming households used as sample for the study. Three analytical tools including: descriptive statistics, regression analysis, and Foster, Greer and Thorbecke (FGT) classes of poverty measures were used for data analysis. The result of the study shows that a typical household comprised more than 10 persons with a male household head. The average age of the household heads was 45.5 years. 73.3% practiced farming with off-farm work. Poverty analysis was disaggregated into age, marital status, household size and primary occupation. Poverty incidence and severity are more among households with farming as the sole occupation. Households combining off-farm jobs with farming are non-poor. Age, literacy level, household size and occupation were the determinants of off-farm employment of the farming households. Policy options which will increase rural productivity, reduce rural poverty and encourage youth participation in rural economy were suggested.
