- ItemA SOCIOLINGUISTICSTUDY OF THE USE OF NIGERIAN PIDGIN ENGLISH(2024) Babagogata Haruna AlhajiThis study investigates the use of Nigerian Pidgin English among drivers and students in Malete Motor Park, focusing on how language serves as a tool Tor communication and social negotiation in a commercial context. Using the Communication Accommodation Theory(CAT),the study examines the linguistic strategies employed by participants to adapt their language based dynamics, on social power relations, and cultural backgrounds. Through the analysis of selected conversations, the research highlights the role of Pidgin English as a lingua franca that facilitates interaction across diverse ethnic and linguistic groups, emphasizing its effectiveness in creating a shared sense of identity .Findings reveal that language features such as address forms, humor, and negotiation techniques are integral to fostering interpersonal rapport and managing social hierarchies. Address terms like "Oga" serve to acknowledge status and build respect, while humor and pleasantries help ease tensions and promote camaraderie. Negotiation over fares and services reflect the socioeconomic realities faced by both drivers and students, highlighting the adaptive nature of language in addressing economic status. This study concludes thatlanguage use in Malete Motor Park is not merely a tool for basic communication but a means of reinforcing social bonds, navigating power dynamics, and expressing cultural identity. These interactions demonstrate how linguistic convergence through Pidgin English facilitates mutual understanding and social cohesion, providing insights into the broader implications of language use in similar sociolinguistic environments. Recommendations for further research include exploring the impact of technological advancements on communication patterns and examining the role of non-verbal cues in enhancing linguistic accommodation. The study contributes to the field of sociolinguistics by providing a deeper understanding of language as a dynamic and multifaceted social phenomenon in commercial settings.
- ItemASTYLISTIC ANALYSIS OF SELECTED DSTV ADVERTISEMENTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA(2023) Babagogata Haruna AlhajiDSTV advertisements are a form of visual advertisement that communicatesmessages, desires, ideas, and intentions.Thus, this study aimsatvarious ways in whichadvertisers use language and style to communicate their customers and how various products are regularly on display to get customers attention thus amountingto sales in the long run. To achieve this, a total of five (5) DSTV advertisements were purposively selectedvia internet. The paperadopts stylistic features to examine how language and styles are adopted in the DSTV advertisements hub. It was discovered that bold print and capitalisation, images and colours were predominantly used at the graphological level which served as a means of catching audience attention, brand identity and enhancing readability. Likewise at the phonological level, alliteration, assonance and consonance were the predominant phonological features used in the analysed data which funclisroed as a means of creating memorability and musicality to the target audiences. Lastly at the morphological level acronyms,repetition and borrowing were predominant mainly foremphasis' sake, economise space and time and also to stir familiarity.The paper concludes that the positive effect of the stylistic features adopted by DSTV advertisements cannot be overemphasized noroverruled.
- ItemPRAGMATICANALYSIS OF SELECTED NEWS REPORT ON NAIRA REDESIGN POLICY(2024) Babagogata Haruna AlhajiLanguage is a powerful tool for shaping public perception, especially in the context of policy reporting. Thus, this studyexplores the pragmatic analysis of Five newsS reports on Nigeria's Nairaredesign policy, drawn from The Punch,The Guardian, and The Nation newspapers. The analysis utilizes Jacob Mey's Pragmatic Act Theory,along with presupposition, and implicature, the research examines how these elements influence the interpretation of the policy. The analysis reveals that assertive acts, such as informing and explaining, dominate the reports, providing detailed information about the policy's aims and implications. Expressive acts reflect public sentiment, highlighting reactions and emotional responses to the policy. Indirect language use, including subtle implications and nuanced suggestions, reveals underlying criticisms and broader implications. SSK and inference play significant roles in interpreting the policy's impact and the public's understanding, as they connectthe policy's details with real-world experiences and expectations. The findings demonstrate how direct language delivers clear information while indirect language and pragmatictools offer deeper insights into the policy's broader effects and public discourse. This study concludes that the importanceof pragmatic analysis in uncoveringhow news reports convey complex policy issues and influence and shape public perceptions, offering a deeper understanding of the interactions between media narratives and public opinion.
