- ItemHeterogeneous Ensemble with Combined Dimensionality Reduction for Social Spam Detection(iJIM ‒ Vol. 15, No. 17, 2021, 2021) Abdulfatai Ganiyu Oladepo; Amos Orenyi Bajeh; Abdullateef Oluwagbemiga Balogun; Hammed Adeleye Mojeed; Abdulsalam Abiodun Salman; Abdullateef Iyanda BakoAbstract—Spamming is one of the challenging problems within social networks which involves spreading malicious or scam content on a network; this often leads to a huge loss in the value of real-time social network services, com- promise the user and system reputation and jeopardize users trust in the system. Existing methods in spam detection still suffer from misclassification caused by redundant and irrelevant features in the dataset as a result of high dimensional- ity. This study presents a novel framework based on a heterogeneous ensemble method and a hybrid dimensionality reduction technique for spam detection in micro-blogging social networks. A hybrid of Information Gain (IG) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) (dimensionality reduction) was implemented for the selection of important features and a heterogeneous ensemble consisting of Naïve Bayes (NB), K Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Logistic Regression (LR) and Repeated Incremental Pruning to Produce Error Reduction (RIPPER) classifi- ers based on Average of Probabilities (AOP) was used for spam detection. To empirically investigate its performance, the proposed framework was applied on MPI_SWS and SAC’13 Tip spam datasets and the developed models were eval- uated based on accuracy, precision, recall, f-measure, and area under the curve (AUC). From the experimental results, the proposed framework (Ensemble + IG + PCA) outperformed other experimented methods on studied spam datasets. Specifically, the proposed framework had an average accuracy value of 87.5%, an average precision score of 0.877, an average recall value of 0.845, an aver- age F-measure value of 0.872 and an average AUC value of 0.943. Also, the proposed framework had better performance than some existing approaches. Consequently, this study has shown that addressing high dimensionality in spam datasets, in this case, a hybrid of IG and PCA with a heterogeneous ensemble method can produce a more effective model for detecting spam contents.
- ItemIssues and Trends in the Provision of Public Library Services in Nigeria: A Literature Survey(Journal of Balkan Libraries Union, 2014-06) Abdulsalam Abiodun Salman; B. Janneke Mostert; Tinashe MugwisiThe philosophy, orientation and nature of public library are routed in the responsibility of disseminating diverse and current information services to the members of its community. Waller and Mcshare (2008) posit two major challenges in the provision and use of public library services which are; lack of obtaining a thorough understanding of the nature of the environment which bothers majorly on information provision and use; and the development of policy frameworks that clarifies institutions goals and brings coherence to diverse and sometimes conflicting policy demands. This paper looks at issues and trends concerning some of the challenges bedeviling the provision and utilisation of public library services in Nigeria such as in-appropriate policies, lack of sufficient professionals, inadequate facilities and services and lack of awareness and proper understanding of the concept of public library services which led to non-use of the available services by potential users. Yield shift theory (YST) of satisfaction phenomena was used to explain the satisfaction phenomenon of public library services by users. Identified challenges were discussed and recommendations made towards developing a framework for improved public library services in Nigeria.

- ItemThe Access and use of Library and Internet as Information Source by Agricultural Academics and Extension Workers within King Cetshwayo District Municipality of Kwazulu-Natal Province, South Africa(Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal), 2022) Kayode Fatokun; Abdulsalam Abiodun SalmanAbstract Information plays a vital role in agricultural production, it is believed to be the foundation for improved agriculture. To improve agriculture, access and use of information is required. This study investigated the access to and use of library and internet by agricultural extension workers and academics as information source. Shannon and Weaver model theory was used to underpin the study. Purposive sampling was used to select three local municipalities within King Cetshwayo District of KwaZulu-Natal Province in South Africa. Quantitative technique was adopted with self-administered structured questionnaire. Convenience sampling technique was adopted to select 60 extension workers in three offices of the department of agriculture located in Eshowe, Melmoth and Ngwelezane and 9 academics from department of agriculture, University of Zululand, making the total number of the study participants sixty-nine (69). Statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) software was used to analyse data collected. Findings revealed that internet facilities are not adequate in agricultural department offices located in the rural areas, thereby, led to minimal use of internet.; Academics regular access to internet led to regular use of internet. Also, Academics had high access to library but low use of library. Most extension workers do not have access to library, thereby, they hardly use library for information source. The study recommends that effort should be made to train, especially the old extension workers on the use of internet for agricultural information source. Use of library should be encouraged among academics and extension workers.
- ItemUndergraduate Students’ Preference for Web-based and Conventional Library Services in Kwara State University, Malete, Kwara State, Nigeria(International Journal of Information Processing and Communication (IJIPC), 2018) Abdulsalam Abiodun Salman; Abdulmalik Oyindamola AleemThe purpose of this study is to investigate undergraduate students’ preference for web-based and conventional library services in Kwara State University. Specifically, the study aimed at identifying the types of web based and conventional library services available, and also determines the frequency with which the students are using web-based and conventional library services in the University. The study adopted descriptive survey design. The population of the study was 3,572 undergraduate library users out of which a sample of three hundred and forty-six (346) was selected using convenience sampling technique. Three hundred and twenty (320) respondents, representing 92.5% of the sample size returned their questionnaire. The questionnaire is titled “Undergraduate Students’ Preference for Web-based and Conventional Library Services” and was used to gather data from the respondents. Data collected were examined and analysed using frequency count and percentage while t-test was used to test the only null hypothesis of the study. The findings of the study showed that 95.9% of the respondents attested to the availability of web based library services. Also, 58.4% of respondents preferred Frequently Ask Questions (FAQ) as integral part of web based library services. In the same vein, the study also discovered that 93.3% of the respondent utilized library orientation and instruction services, while current awareness service is the least or rarely used conventional library services representing 41.9%. Cumulatively, the study discovered that web based library services are the most preferred services used by the students. The study recommended that university authority and library management should make provision and further advocate the use of web based library services, while the conventional services serve as complimentary. This is pertinent in order to conform to global modern library practice which is characterized by using ICT facilities and resources.
