Salleh and Rashidat Modupe OladimejiRetention of academic staff in private universities has raised alarm among stakeholders in educational industy. Thus, effective retention measur of complex workforce are sinquanon for the effectivess of university programme. This study therefore examines nexus between retention strategies and lecturers effectiveness in private university in South West, Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive research design . The population of the study comprise 1921 academic staff in all 23 private universities in South West, Nigeria. Three states were purposively selectedfor the study, while proportional sample was used to select 565 academic staff using research advisor. The researcher designed questionnaire tagged retention strategies and teachers effectivenss questionnaire were you for data collection. The reliability coeficient of the study were ascertaine using test re-test method of reliability giving 0.69, 0.73 for RSQ and LEQ respectively. Pearson product moment correlation coefficent was used to test the hypotheses formulated in the study. The findigs of the study show that a significant relationship exist between retention strategies in South west, Nigeria. The study recommended among other that academic staff should be granted autonomy to pursue intellectual inquiry related to their areas of specialization without unreasonable restriction . Prominient should be given input package for insurance policies and retirement benefits to keep academic staff fit with social economic demand at old age and compesatation packages of academic stafff in private universities should be enhanced and made relevant to the prevailing economic circumstances through periodical review
