dc.description.abstract | The study investigated the perceived changes in climate, crop yield and examined the coping strategies of farmers. Through a three-stage sampling technique, 192 farmers were randomly selected as respondents. Data collected by means of structured interview schedule were analyzed using percentages, frequencies, and Pearson Correlation statistics. The result of the study revealed that 41.7% of the respondents were between 31-40 years with an average age of 36.07 years. More than half of the famers strongly agreed that the amount of rainfall in recent time is on the decrease while 47.8% of the respondents strongly agreed that the timing of the rainfall is not favourable for the cultivation of arable crops. Also, 55.7% of the respondents noticed a shorter rainy season accompanied by flood while 40% of them observed a gradual spread of drought in the state. In addition, about half of the respondents reported an increase in the ambient temperature. Most of the respondents (67.5%) strongly agreed that there was a reduction in crop yield. Therefore it was recommended that the farmers should intensify the use of fadama with irrigation facilities while research should concentrate on massive production of pests, disease and drought tolerant species of crops which are currently in short supply. | |
