dc.description.abstract | Abstract A Waqf in Islam is also known and referred as Islamic endowment. It usually benefits the community as a whole by offering a service that is useful to society or to a particular individuals based on the intended beneficiaries by the donor. The purpose of waqf is to provide benefits to society or to support various charitable activities. These include but not limited to rendering a financial support to the poor, digging of well (water) building of mosques, hospitals or schools such as university. A good example of this in Nigeria is Maryam Endowment Fund situates in Kaduna town, a city in Kaduna state of northern Nigeria. The endowment also has an office in Abuja known as Maryam Endowment Fund Estate (Kado Estate), Abuja (the capital territory of Nigeria). Maryam Endowment Fund though based in Kaduna, Nigeria has through the years aided and benefited many people especially in the northern part of the country thus becomes a pacesetter in the history of classical Waqf in Islam. This paper looks at Maryam Endowment Fund, its form and its activities and impacts vis-à-vis a pacesetter in Nigeria. At the conclusion, the paper also looks at some other foundations akin to Maryam Endowment Fund and their areas of dissimilarities with a view to bring out the difference between them and Maryam Endowment Fund.
