- ItemA study of proverbs and gender perspectives in Olu Obafemi’s Pestle on the Mortar(National Theatre, Alpha Crowns Publishing Limited and Department of English, University of Ilorin, 2021-08-18) Gobir, M.T.; Zakariyah, M.Proverbs are brief, precise or succinct expressions of wisdom that are fixed in both structure and meaning, often memorable and passed down from one generation to another. are a very special way of passing an important message particularly in a serious dialogue because of their general acceptability in a speech community where they are used. Proverbs are societal based and context dependent for their moral import or didactic value to be realised. Although, the same proverbs can be found in as many cultures and, they are mostly used to emphasise the core-cultural values in a particular society, hence their special connection with culture. It is in view of this that this study examines Olu Obafemi’s Pestle on the Mortar from a sociolinguistic perspective through the lens of Accommodation Theory.
