Examining the Effects of Local Government Participation in Economic Development Planning of Sabon-Gari Local Government Area in Kaduna State
(KASHERE JOURNAL OF POLITICS AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS, 2025-07-10) Yusuf Birisan Lawal; Lukman Omomeji Shehu; Yusuf Ibrahim Ajao
Development strategies, efforts and programmes are more and more being designed to induce local participation towards ensuring economic development. It is on this basis that the study examined the relationship between local government participation and economic development planning in Sabon-Gari Local Government. The study adopted qualitative research design relying solely on Face-to-Face interview to generate data for the study with the population comprised of six (6) respondents comprising Local Government Chairman, Vice Chairman, LEEDs Coordinator, Sabon-Gari and Desk Officers (I, II & III). The information from interview section was corroborated by secondary data from relevant documents. Some of the relevant documents reviewed include NEEDs Document, (2005) and LEEDs Implementation Manual, 2005. The data generated from the interviewees were thematically analysed. From the presentation and analysis of data, the study concluded that Local Government participation in NEEDs through LEEDs has promoted economic empowerment and development through a more articulate, forward looking, progressive and radical strategy with its inclusive participatory nature (involving government, private sector and the people) in managing the resources of the country for the benefit of the teeming population. However, many factors have stood against the dreams of this strategy including weak leadership at the centre, debt burden etc. The study therefore, recommended among others the need for Nigeria as a nation through its government should fight for debt relief and the need for a monitoring agency to be established that would help in the service delivery of the NEEDs, SEEDs and LEEDs programmes.

Nigeria's Rural Development Policy: Fostering Sustainable Cities and Communities
(Jewel Journal of Politics, 2025-08-15) Yusuf Ibrahim Ajao; Akeem Ayanda ARABA (PhD); Lukman Omomeji SHEHU
Sustainable Development Goal 11 emphasizes the need to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable, and serves as the framework for this study. The idea of sustainable cities and communities has become a central focus of contemporary urban planning and governance. However, rapid urbanization and the persistence of unsustainable development policies have intensified the challenges of rural underdevelopment, particularly in Nigeria. Despite the crucial role of rural development in driving sustainable economic growth, successive administrations in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic have largely neglected policies aimed at strengthening rural communities. This neglect has produced multifaceted socio-economic and environmental challenges. This study examines the relationship between rural development policy and the concept of sustainable cities and communities as articulated by the United Nations. It further interrogates the interconnected challenges facing both rural and urban areas in their pursuit of development. Employing a qualitative research design, the study relies on thematic analysis of data and insights from purposively selected respondents. Findings reveal that rural development and sustainable cities are mutually reinforcing, underscoring the importance of integrated policy frameworks. The study recommends prioritizing strategies that strengthen rural–urban linkages, such as efficient transportation systems, sustainable agricultural and land use practices, investment in renewable energy, expanded access to education and healthcare, and the preservation of biodiversity and ecological balance.

(ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY JOURNAL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES, 2026-01-05) Salawu Ibrahim O.; Adamu Rashida Oyoru; Yusuf Ibrahim Ajao
Over a decade now, the Nigeria state have been bedeviling with several typologies of security challenges, which is more predominant in the North-eastern Nigeria. The nature of insecurity in North-eastern has been rapid and ramped ranging from Boko-haram, bandits, suicide bombing, cattle rustlers among other security challenges. The upsurge in this level of insecurity as made life unconducive and unbearable for many populace in most parts on North-eastern Nigeria. This menace has made majority of citizens to leave their ancestral home to find abode in refugee camps who are been technically referred to as internal displace persons (IDPs). The effects of this insurgency has resulted into social vices such as out of school children, economics hardship, health issues among other several consequences. The paper adopts both the qualitative and quantitative research method, which consist of primary and secondary data. The research population were made up of the personnel of Non-governmental organization, Internally Displaced Person (IDPs) across the Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe state respectively and other similar federal and state agencies in humanitarian response delivery. The sapling technique was purposive and sample size was calculated using the Taro Yamane formula and data analysis was presented in SPSS and thematic forms. The paper finds out that Humanitarian non-state actors (HNSAs) have played a pivotal role in delivering life-saving assistance. Other findings shows a strong positive perception of their contributions to food security, healthcare, education, and psycho-social support, particularly among IDPs. The paper therefore recommends that HNSAs should adopt area- based aid models that incorporate host communities into planning and delivery frameworks which will reduce grievances and reinforce social cohesion. At the same time, the establishment of community-based feedback mechanisms is essential for aid delivery programs in North-east Nigeria.
