- ItemAdoption of Automation and Effectiveness of Library Services By Librarians in Academic Libraries in Abia State(2022-04) Olusola Olowookere; Inemesit U.; Yahaya Aliyu IsmailaThe study examined adoption of automation and effectiveness of library services by librarians in academic libraries in Abia State. It adopted the survey research design with four objectives to guide the study. The population of the study comprises 27 librarians of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) Library. The data for the study was collected using the structure questionnaire and the census sampling technique was used since all the study population were used. The instrument yielded a 100% response rate. Data collected were analysed using the descriptive statistics which showed the frequency counts, mean scores and standard deviations, while the corresponding hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance with the chi-square inferential method. The findings revealed that library services necessary for automation in academic libraries by librarians include acquisition, circulation, cataloguing and classification, etc. It also showed that the facilities needed for automation of academic library services are computers, printers, scanners, effective internet services, etc. The study further revealed that the status of automation of academic library services in the academic library under study is not effective. The study showed the problems of automation of academic library services in Abia State to include inadequate funding of academic libraries, inadequate ICT skills of librarians, por internet access, etc. However, the test of hypothesis revealed that there is a relationship between automation and effectiveness of library services in academic libraries by librarians in Abia State. Consequently, the study conclusively recommends, among other things, that management of academic libraries should provide adequate funding to academic libraries to enable plan and execute effective automation of library services in academic libraries.
- ItemASSESSMENT OF LIBRARY DATABASE UTILIZATION FOR ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES AMONG KWARA STATE UNIVERSITY LECTURERS DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC PERIOD(Journal of applied Information Science and Technology, 2021-02) Florence Olabisi Ajani; Yahaya Aliyu Ismaila; Rafiu Olabamiji AyodelePurpose: This research investigated the utilization of library database for academic activities by Kwara State University lecturers during COVID-19 pandemic period. The entire population of 426 lecturers in the KWASU 7 faculties were adopted for the research. Design/Methodology/Approach: Descriptive survey was the method adopted for this study. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts and percentages were used to analyse the data. Findings: The findings of this research revealed among others that very few (34.4%) of the lecturers were aware of the subscribed online database; the major sources (67.7%) of awareness of the existence of the Elsevier database by the lecturers were through Conferences/Seminars/ Workshops/ Lectures. It was recommended that the university library should intensify sensitization of the lecturers on the awareness and use of the subscribed online database for teaching, research and learning in general. The study concluded that lecturers should make optimal use of the subscribed online database to improve their learning and teaching.
- ItemCorrelational Analysis of Technostress and Job Productivity of Library Staff in Selected Academic Libraries in Kwara State(Journal of Advancements in Library Sciences, 2022-08) Yahaya Aliyu Ismaila; Abdul Hadi AyodejiThis study investigated correlational analysis of technostress and job productivity of library staff in selected academic libraries in Kwara State. Descriptive survey research design was adopted and a sample of 53 library staff were selected from Kwara State University Library, Al-hikmah University Library and Crownhill University Library by using total enumeration sampling technique. A structured questionnaire was designed to obtain information from 53 participants, 51 were returned and fully completed. While PPMC was employed to test the study's only null hypothesis, frequency counts and percentages were utilized to examine the data gathered for the five research topics. The survey indicated that the respondent had a high degree of job productivity. The study also found that majority of the respondents experience eye pain; backaches; headaches; blurred vision; and tiredness as the technostress symptoms while poor working conditions, work overload, lack of technical support, lack of technological competence and expertise, and technophobia are some of the causes of technostress to the respondents. The result further revealed that technostress affects job productivity of the respondents to some extent while technology-based training; getting adequate user-friendly software; staying healthy and eating proper dieting; effective time management; and taking frequent break are some of the ways of managing technostress by the respondents. The outcome also indicated a strong correlation between technological stress and the library staff's ability to do their jobs effectively. The study recommends that the management should organize technology-based training on the use of computer system, software and hardware for their staff which will help them to be more conversant with the use of the adopted ICTs which will make them less predisposed to experience technostress; and they should get adequate user-friendly software which will be easy for the staff to use without stressing themselves before completing a certain task.

The study research objectives include: (i)determine the influence of computer self-efficacy on the use of Electronic Resources by undergraduates at University of Ilorin and Kwara University, Malete, Kwara state Nigeria; (ii)find whether information literacy influence use of electronic resources by undergraduates at the University of Ilorin and Kwara State University, Malete, Kwara State NigeriaAlso, the study adopted descriptive survey design and used a sample of 376 undergraduate students. Data for the study was collected using a questionnaire and were analyzed using frequency count and percentage while the two hypotheses were tested using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC). The study found that majority of the undergraduate students had a high level of computer self-efficacy which influence their use of electronic information resources. In the same vein, the study found that majority of the undergraduate students found that information literacy skills influence their use of electronic information resources. Furthermore, the study found that the combination of computer self-efficacy and information literacy skills influence the use of electronic information resources by undergraduate students in University of Ilorin and Kwara State University. Similarly, the study found that majority of the undergraduate students use electronic information resources to do their assignment and also use electronic information resources to get relevant academic materials through personal searches. On the other hand, the study found that that management should provide good facilities (e.g., good computer hardware and software and good communication network) to support usage and also improve internet connectivity to improve the use of electronic resources among the undergraduate students. Finally, the study found that both computer self-efficacy and information literacy skills have a significant relationship with the use of electronic information resources.

In the present society, the types of information and the media which present them have become manifold and multifarious, offering many postgraduates students ample opportunity to make choice of selection. Regardless of the group in a human society that is discussed, each one bases its actions upon current information and discards the earlier data. Philosophers emphasize the direct, experiential acquisition of knowledge in the material, physical plane of existence as the most proper form of information. So, no one can deny that knowledge and information are vital.

The study adopted simple random sampling technique in which two hundred and seventy-eight (278) respondents were selected from the population of one thousand four hundred and two (1402) in the department. Data collected from the study were analysed using SPSS and frequency tables and percentage distribution used to present the results. The study established that Computer, E-mails, Internet, Online databases, CD-ROM databases, Electronic journal and e-book are the major types of electronic resources available for teaching and learning of library and information science while the purpose of use of e-resources included; research work, assignment, examinations and projects, easy availability of updated data and quick access to information. However, low bandwidth, poor level of computer literacy, unreliable power supply, Inadequacy of facilities and Inadequate networking computers were the major problems affecting the use of eresources for teaching and learning of library and information science. The study concluded that digital databases, online journals and e-books gives students more information and connect them globally, It therefore recommended that the provision of Internet facilities, provision of high and stable bandwidth, training of students and lecturers on use of ICT, and the need to make online learning through use of electronic resources interactive so as to appeal and sustain the interest of users.

Salman; Muhammed MusaThis study was conducted on appraisal of library development committee activities as catalyst to enhancing academic library services in Kwara State University, Malete. The study was conducted using a qualitative research design. The interview guide has twelve items in which questions were sought on types of library services provided in Kwara State University, Malete. Interview approach was chosen in order to collect a well-detailed and comprehensive data and information on the appraisal of library development committee activities as catalyst to enhancing academic library services. The study found that the types of library services provided in Kwara State Library are: current awareness services (CAS), selective dissemination of information (SDI), reprographics services, reference services, circulation services, collection development service. The finding also shows that the challenges faced by library development committee are; poor funding, deficit infrastructure and nonchalant attitude. However, the solutions to the challenges militating against the success of library development committee are: provision of adequate fund for the library and appropriate use of fund meant for the library
- ItemMotivation and job satisfaction as correlates of job performance of library staff in Landmark University, Omu-Aran, Kwara State(2022) Abdul Hadi Ayodeji; Yahaya Aliyu Ismaila; Olusanya Dotun EmmanuelThis study examined motivation and job satisfaction as correlates of job performance of library staff in Landmark University, Omu-Aran, Kwara State. Descriptive survey research design was adopted and the entire 25 library staff constituted the population and sample of the study. Questionnaire was used to collect data from the 25 staff, out of which 23 copies of the questionnaire were completely filled and returned. Frequency counts and percentages were used to analyze the data collected to answer the six research questions while Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (PPMC) and multiple regression analysis were used to test the null hypotheses of the study. The study revealed that the level of job performance of the respondent is high; that appreciation, promotion, financial incentives, among others are the major motivational factors that influence job performance of the respondents while salary structure, job security, relationship with co-workers, institution’s policies, and work itself are the factors that determine the job satisfaction of the respondents; that motivation and job satisfaction influence the job performance of the respondents to a great extent while inadequate funds to support career development programme of the staff, insufficient technological skills, and lack of proper motivation from the superior are the major barriers to the effective performance of the respondents. The results of the tested hypotheses revealed that motivation and job satisfaction jointly influence the job performance of the respondents. The study recommends that library management should ensure that staff are constantly motivated and satisfied with their jobs which will in turn enable them to improve their performance and organizational productivity; library management in conjunction with the university management should provide enough fund to support career development programmes of the staff.
- ItemPerception of the use of card catalogue and online public access catalogue (OPAC) among undergraduates of Kwara State University, Malete, Nigeria(2021) Florence Olabisi Ajani; Yahaya Aliyu IsmailaThe purpose of this study was to identify the most employable and effective retrieval system between card catalogue and online public access catalogue (OPAC) among undergraduates of Kwara State University, Malete, Nigeria. Three research questions were raised in order to find out the perception of the use of card catalogue and online public access catalogue (OPAC) among undergraduates of Kwara State University. The study included a sample size of 360 students who were selected at random from the university’s seven faculties. Data was obtained through administered questionnaires and the data was evaluated using descriptive statistics. The outcome of the research indicated that majority of the undergraduates were aware of the OPAC and were of the opinion that it is more current and accessible anywhere within and outside the university environment than the card catalogue that requires users to visit the library before it can be access. Many of the respondents preferred online public access catalogue to the card catalogue due to its flexibility, less time consuming, and because it provides easier reference point. It is advisable for the university library to mount more OPAC stands for the undergraduates and other users of the library.

Five research questions were raised in order to find out the use of e-resources for achieving intellectual freedom. Sample of 362 students in twelve faculties of two universities were rrrandomly sur veyed. Data collected using questionnaire were analyzed usi3ng descriptive statistics. Results indicate that lion’s share of students are aware that e-resources are ver y good in writing academic papers, newspapers are the highly preferred print material, internet resources highly preferred, majority agreed e-resources encourage intellectual freedom and power outage is the major challenge in the use of e-resources.3

The data was collected from a sample of 360 users through questionnaire method. Users were faculty and students of seven academic institutions in Kwara State. The major objectives are to know the awareness and use, effectiveness of social media tools in their institution and to dig out the problems in their use. It is found that lion’s share are aware of social media tools, more than half found it as effective, more than half regularly using, twitter is used most, almost cent percent are using it for personal research/study/examination, inadequate power supply is the major hurdle, respondents suggested to provide adequate funds. Questionnaire administration method was adopted to accumulate data for the study. Combinations of both open ended and closed-form types of questions were used. The study reveals that most undergraduates’ students in Kwara State University consult serials for leisure and the few that consults serials either use serials in stock. Newspaper magazines were the major forms of serials used by the students in KWASU with Newspapers being the more utilized. University libraries and Internet were the major sources of serials used by the students. The result also reports that most of students from the University consult serials for informative and recreational purpose.
