- ItemEFFECTS OF THERAPEUTIC EXERCISE PROGRAM ON THE SELF-CONCEPT AND SELF-ESTEEM OF CONVICTED INMATES IN CORRECTIONAL CENTRES IN NIGERIA(2020) Prof. Ibrahim Laro ABUBAKARCorrectional educational therapeutic exercise program for health and positive emotional development has become an interesting area in the field of sports and exercise science. Studies confirmed that exercise has proven to be effective in improving and maintaining efficiency of the body physiological and psychological status. However, it is not certain whether Human Kinetics exercise program has the acclaimed potency among individuals who are in correctional centres as a result of convictions and what they stand to gain from it as they transit back to the society hence, this study investigated the interrelationships among incarcerated people with depressed mind and therapeutics exercises. Simple random sampling techniques was used for the selection of correctional centres. Participant were purposely selected based on their inclusion criterial, such as fitness level, willingness, readiness, voluntarism, and educational status. Seventy-four (74) out of one hundred and six (106) convicted inmates who volunteered to partake in his study and were randomly assigned into control and experimental groups. Therapeutic exercise program was therefore found to be a significant correctional education tool for self-concept and self-esteem of inmates in correctional centres. It is therefore recommended that the Government and the Correctional Centres Authorities at all levels should collaborate with expert in the field of sports and exercise science to design appropriate Exercise Program and put in place facilities that would boost self-concept and self-esteem status of prison inmates, so that upon completion of convicted term the integration and re-entry back into the society would be smother and highly integrating for a long term success and avenue for positive contributions.
