The thrust of this research is to shed light on how proverbs encapsulate the history, beliefs, norms and value system of a particular group of people. The work is anchored on the Speech Act Theory championed by Austin (1962), and other notable scholars. The model that serves as the foundation for which our analysis was built is the pragmatics model of Lawal (2012). The research methodology involves the use of written texts and conscious oral documentation of the selected Ibadan-related proverbs. Our research findings show that Ìbàdàn-related Yorùbá proverbs give historical, geographical, political, environmental and moral accounts of both the people and the city itself. It was proverb is also used for advertising and promotion of heritage sites and tourist centers of attractions. In conclusion, Ìbàdàn-related Yoruba proverbs highlighted in this work show clearly the belief and value systems .
