They acquire and organize information materials and services to support the teaching, learning and research objectives of the institution. In the past, academic libraries are usually considered as the physical structure that house the print books, journals, theses/dissertations, reference materials etc. but now this has changed, with the advancements in ICT tools, we are now in the era of electronic materials/resources. To cope with the challenges of COVID 19 pandemic that has emphasized the need for a more online learning platforms to keep staff and library users safe, academic libraries will need to provide online information resources and services to suit the present realities. Academic libraries will have to redefine their services to adequately provide information resources and services to support the objectives of the parent institution. This paper suggests strategies and services that academic libraries can adopt to cope with the changes in learning environment and sustain their services post COVID-19 era.
- ItemATTITUDE OF LIBRARIANS TOWARDS THE USE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES IN SELECTED ACADEMIC LIBRARIES IN KWARA STATE(University of Nebraska, 2019) Abubakar, Hajarat; Babafemi, Grace; Nallah, Bilqees Jumai; Oyeyemi, Francis OlusanjoThis study examined librarians’ attitude towards the use of ICT in selected academic libraries in Kwara State. Descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population of the study consist of all the librarians in University of Ilorin, Kwara State University and Al-hikmah University which gives a total number of 51 librarians. A structured questionnaire was developed to elicit information from the 51 librarians from the selected academic libraries in Kwara State, out of which 49 copies of the questionnaire were completely filled and return. The data collected were analyzed with the use of frequency counts, percentages and PPMC. The results of the study revealed that computer, projector, OPAC among others are the ICT facilities available in the selected library. Most importantly, librarians in the study have positive attitudes towards the use of ICT, and there is a significant relationship between attitude and use of ICT among the librarians. Furthermore, the study found that inadequate funding, poor infrastructural facilities among others are the challenges that librarians encountered while using ICT facilities. The study recommended that adequate funds be made available to the libraries, and there should be alternative for the epileptic power supply.
- ItemInfluence of Social Media on the Information Behaviour of Undergraduate Students in Kwara State, Nigeria(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences, University of Ilorin., 2020) Abdul, Hadi Ayodeji; Kehinde, Adetola Ayotunde; Amuda, Halimah Odunayo; Nallah, Bilqees JumaiInformation has been seen as a heavily stressed factor that shapes society, particularly the introduction of social media technology. This study, therefore, examined the influence of social media usage on the information behaviour of undergraduate students in selected universities in Kwara State, Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population for this study comprised 60,533 undergraduate students. Israel's (2003) sample size model was used to select the sample size with precision levels of 5% and a confidence level of 95%. The selectedsample size was three hundred and eighty-five (385). A total of 385 copies of the questionnaire were distributed to the respondents in the university libraries for the data collection. The data collected were analysed using tables and frequency counts. The findings of the study show Facebook as the most preferred social media tool by undergraduate students. The findings further revealed that there is a high usage of social media among undergraduate students. The findings also showed that the major purposes of using social media by undergraduate students are to connect with friends and for academic activities. However, the findings generally show that there is a significant relationship between the purpose of using social media and the information behaviour of undergraduate students. Since the benefits attached to using social media cannot be overemphasized. The study, therefore, recommended that university management should ensure that they integrate social media applications into their learning and teaching system.
