- ItemUNE ETUDE MYTHOCRITIQUE DE L’EMPLOI DU TEMPS ET DE DEGRES DE MICHEL BUTOR(Published by Department of French, University of Ghana Legon, Accra, 2023) ABDULMALIK, Ismail; NNABUIKE Akunna PaulineMore often than not, the myth which is a controversial and anonymous story, can cause misunderstanding and confusion in the reading of the novel of Michel Butor. This is because, it figures prominently in these novels and is the source of the problem of understanding his texts. From his second novel, L’Emploi du temps, to his last novel, Degrés, the myth intervenes in an intertextual way; either to mitigate the situation described or to reinforce a particular theme. In L’Emploi du temps, the myth is used to reveal Revel’s difficulty in learning about and adapting to Bleston, an unremarkable modern city. Whereas in Degrés, the myth plays a philosophical role; difficulty of fusing various phenomena into one. In this present study focusing on mythocritical theory, we discovered that Michel Butor considers myth as a clever stratagem that transforms an irreconcilable binary opposition into a reconcilable binary one, thus creating illusion or confusion for the readers of his nonels. The myth exists in society and serves as a basis for reflection and philosophical thoughts of it.
