- ItemApplication of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Information Dissemination in Special Libraries in Nigeria(2019) Mohammed Lawal Akanbi; Dorcas Odunayo Ogunleye; Kabir Alabi SulaimanBackground of the study: This study examined the Application of ICT in Dissemination of Information in Selected Special Libraries in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State, Nigeria. Three Special libraries from the metropolis of the state comprised the sample population of the study; Central Bank of Nigeria Library, Michael Imoudu Institute of Labor Studies Library and Ghalib Chamber Library. Purpose: The study employed a survey research design using the Enumeration sampling technique. A questionnaire was used to obtain data from the respondents. The population of the study consisted of twenty-one (21) respondents which comprised of library professionals and library assistants. The usage of Email to render CAS is not a norm in these special libraries. Method: Data collected from the field were analyzed using descriptive method of analysis. Findings: Apart from CAS, it was found that selective dissemination of information (SDI) is not done with the aid of technological tools in these Libraries and these libraries rarely make use of OPAC to provide easy access to their resources, efficiency and effectiveness of ICT in the dissemination of information were not realized because of the low usage of ICT to drive operations in the library. The study recommended that there should be a standard alternative source of power for proper Usage of ICT facilities and management of special libraries should help their users in subscribed for a database that would assist them in having access to robust information. Conclusion: The study concluded that ICT facilities are put in place in the selected special libraries are not adequate and are as well not fully utilized. It was gathered that the usage of ICT facilities to render services like current awareness services (CAS) is not up to expectation.
- ItemSleeping Habits and Academic Performance of Library and Information Science Undergraduates in Nigeria(Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences Koodakyar St., Daneshjoo Blvd., Velenjak, Tehran, Iran, 2021) Ismail Olatunji Adeyemi; Kabir Alabi SulaimanIntroduction: The workload of studying library and information science (LIS) at undergraduates in Nigeria often accompanies challenging sleeping habits. Hence, this study examined the influence of sleeping habits on the academic performance of LIS undergraduates in Nigeria. Methods: The study adopts a mixed-methods strategy, using concurrent triangulation. Data were collected using a Web-based questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. Interview sessions were carried out with twelve participants using the Zoom application, and a total of 291 LIS undergraduates completed the questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and one-way ANOVA were used to analyze the research questions and test hypotheses, respectively. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the transcribed interview report. Results: It was revealed that most LIS undergraduates (85.6%) had good sleep quality during the examination period compared to no examination (14.1%). It was shown that there is a statistically significant effect of levels of study on students’ sleep duration (p-value = 0.02) and a statistically significant effect of types of institution on sleep quality (p-value = 0.03). The thematic analysis found that sleep duration positively influences academic performance while sleep quality negatively influences academic performance. Conclusion: It was established that LIS undergraduates have adequate sleep duration and sleep only when there is no examination. This implies that their sleep quality and duration are inadequate during the examination period, indicating that they do not have a healthy sleep habit. Moreover, it was established that sleep duration and sleep quality affect the academic performance of LIS undergraduates.
- ItemSocio-Psychological Factors as Determinants to Information-Seeking Behavior of LIS Undergraduates in Kwara State(2020-11) Kabir Alabi SulaimanThis study examines socio-psychological factors as determinants to information-seeking behaviour of LIS undergraduates in Kwara state. A descriptive survey method was adopted. A questionnaire was used to collect data for the study. The total population for the study is 2392. From which the sample size of 333 was selected using Raosoft size calculator. The study revealed that most of LIS undergraduate have fear during information searching process. The study also revealed that LIS undergraduates are of opinions that having access to the internet improves their ability to search for information. It was also found out that most of LIS undergraduates were helped with internet to have access to various sources of information simultaneously. In conclusion, there is a significant relationship between computer/internet and information-seeking behaviour of LIS undergraduates in Kwara state. This research recommends that LIS undergraduate should improve confidence in the use of internet/computer to seek information with ease and LIS undergraduate should develop a mechanism for self-confidence while seeking for information
- ItemThe use of bigdata in the management of library resources: Nigeria university expriences(2024-07) M. L. Akanbi; Kabir Alabi Sulaiman; Maliq Hammed Omolola; Bilqees Jumia NallahServices of libraries have to be accessible to all members of the community; this requires well situated library infrastructure, facilities and information resources as well as relevant technologies. Therefore, this study explored the use of big data in the management of library resources in university libraries. Four objectives were proposed for the study to describe the use of bigdata in managing resources of university library. In addition, ethical concern related to the use of bigdata was also identified in the paper. Descriptive literature review was used as methodology. The study conclude that Bigdata as a tool in university libraries is an important mechanism that is meant to protect library information resources for use. The nature of the library resources call for more protection especially resources are ICT in nature. However, the important of Bigdata in any organization including library become an imperative to resources management. The nature of services delivery in this present age in university library calls for the use of Bigdata so that right information resources can be provided to right people at tight time and place. Based on the concluding part, the study recommends that awareness should be provided by university libraries and management on the opportunities of Bigdata to library clienteles and training, conference and workshop should be orgnise by library and university management in order to equip library personnel with the needed skills and knowledge on better use of Bigdata in service provision.
