    APPRAISING THE ROLES OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT) AS A CHANGE AGENT FOR UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES IN KWARA STATE, NIGERIA

    This study investigated the role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as a change agent for university libraries in Kwara State, Nigeria. The study objectives include: (i) identifying types of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facilities used in university libraries in Kwara State; (ii) examining the roles of ICT in university libraries in Kwara State; (iii) investigating the challenges militating against the use of ICT in university libraries in Kwara State. In order to achieve the study objectives, three research questions were designed to guide the study, the two null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The study comprised 50 professional librarians population in selected university libraries in Kwara State, Nigeria. A structured questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for the analysis while the study used Chi Square in analysing the two null hypotheses. The results revealed that (i) numerous ICT tools are used in the university library in Kwara State, Nigeria; (ii) ICT has changed the roles of university libraries in Kwara State, Nigeria; and (iii) numerous challenges militates against the use of ICT in university libraries in Kwara State. Based on the findings, the study recommended that the Federal and State government including proprietors of private universities and other stakeholders should ensure adequate funding of university libraries in the light of active investment rather than a passive obligation, There is urgent need for the improvement of power supply in university libraries in order to enhance maximum use of the ICT facilities because they depend on light (electricity) to function.

    EFFECTS OF SCAFFOLDING METHOD OF TEACHING ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS IN FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING IN KWARA STATE

    This study was undertaken to determine the effects of scaffolding method of teaching on the academic performance of secondary school students in financial accounting in Kwara State, Nigeria. The full population of the survey was 1,759 comprising all the senior secondary school students, offering financial accounting in Ilorin South Local Government, Kwara State, Nigeria. The sample size is 275 students using simple random sampling technique. One of the specific objectives was to determine the effect of treatment of scaffolding method on the academic performance of secondary school students. The research design of the study was based on the pretest-post-test non-equivalent control group design. Mean, and Standard deviation were used as the statistical tools to analyze the data to answer the research question. Analysis of Co-variance (ANCOVA) was used to test the null hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The findings of this study showed that the scaffolding method of teaching has a positive effect on secondary school students‟ academic performance in financial accounting. The study also revealed that there was a significant treatment effect of scaffolding method on the academic performance of students in financial accounting. The study concluded that the scaffolding method is an effective method of teaching financial accounting in secondary schools. The implication, therefore, is that, when the scaffolding method is well utilized, the students‟ performance is expected to improve. The study recommends among others that for students‟ achievement in financial accounting to be improved, financial accounting teachers should ensure regular use of scaffolding method in the classroom while teaching.

    Influence of Teaching Practice on Business Education Students’ Employability Skills

    The study investigated the influence of teaching practice on Business Education students’ employability skills in universities in North-central and South-western States, Nigeria. The study which employed a descriptive survey identified three employability skills which were communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Three objectives, three research questions and three null hypotheses were raised for the study. The entire 400 level business education students in universities offering business education programs in North-central and South-western States, Nigeria constituted the population of the study. There was no sampling since the entire population was considered sizeable and manageable. A structured 43-items questionnaire titled Questionnaire on Influence of Teaching Practice on Students’ Employability Skills (QITPSES) was designed for the study. The reliability of the instrument was ascertained using the Cronbach Alpha method to obtain the r-coefficient of 0.93 for clusters B1-B3 of the questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed to 1,594 business education students in universities in North-central and South-western States, Nigeria. One hundred and forty copies of the questionnaire were not returned and so 1,454 copies were used for the study. The research questions were analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation. T-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were used to test the null hypotheses of the study at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed among others that teaching practice positively influence business education students’ communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills to a high extent (x̅= 3.01, 2.76, and 3.02; SD= 0.85, 0.60, and 0.81 respectively). It was concluded therefore that business education students, irrespective of their background (gender and institution type) rated the influence of teaching practice on communication skills, teamwork skills, and problem-solving skills as positive to a high extent. Based on the findings, three recommendations were proffered, among which was that Government should provide finance in form of stipend for trainee teachers (students on teaching practice program) as this will encourage them more to acquire the necessary employability skills.

    PERCEIVED ENTREPRENEURSHIP COMPETENCIES REQUIRED BY BUSINESS EDUCATION STUDENTS IN ESTABLISHING SMALL SCALE VENTURES IN KWARA STATE

    The study investigated perceived entrepreneurship competencies required by business education students for establishing small-scale ventures in Kwara State. Descriptive survey research design was employed for the survey. A total of 205 comprising 39-business education lecturers and 166 entrepreneurs in Ilorin metropolis made up the population for the study. Three research questions and three null hypotheses guide the conduct of the study. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire with Cronbach reliability coefficient of 0.86. The method used for analyzing the data collected for the study was mean and standard deviation for the research questions and t-test was used to test the null hypotheses at the 0.05 level of significance. The result of the data collected and analyzed indicated that managerial skill, Information and communication technology skills and marketing skills are required by business education students in establishing small-scale venture as perceived by business education lecturers and entrepreneurs. The result of the test of the null hypothesis showed significant difference in the mean rating of lecturers and entrepreneurs. It was concluded that entrepreneurial skills are highly required for establishing small-scale ventures. It was recommended among others that undergraduates in Business education should strive towards skill acquisition because success and progress in the world of work and becoming self-employed, self-reliant is dependent on the skills and abilities possessed.
