- ItemChallenges of Female Participation in Tahfizu’l-Qur’ān: Ilorin as a Case Study(Lafiya Journal of Arts, 2024) Hussain-Abubakar, Sherifat; Imam-Fulani, HajaratThe practice of Qur’an memorization, initiated by Prophet Muhammad and his Companions, has been perpetuated by Muslims across generations to harness its numerous spiritual and intellectual benefits. Today, Qur’an memorization has evolved to include global competitions that test and celebrate proficiency among Muslims. Despite both genders participating, female memorizers remain significantly underrepresented. This paper investigates the specific challenges faced by female Qur’an memorizers in Ilorin, Nigeria. Using a descriptive and analytical approach, the study employs interviews and observations as primary data collection methods. Respondents were randomly selected from among female students, teachers, parents, and coordinators of Qur’an memorization centers in Ilorin. Findings reveal that societal misconceptions about female roles and rights in Islam, coupled with a lack of female-sensitive institutional support, greatly hinder female participation in Qur’an memorization. The study suggests that addressing these challenges requires providing both physical and psychological support to female students and restructuring Qur’an memorization centers to be more inclusive and supportive of female learners.
