- ItemAccessing the Impact of E-Learning on Tertiary Education Management Amidst the Global Wave of Covid -19 Pandemic in Nigeria: Issues and Prospects(Organization and Human Capital Development (ORCADEV), 2022-06-12) Abubakar S. Yushau Alfakoro; Ibrahim O. SalawuTertiary education is an important tool for jumpstarting development in almost all nations of the world. It serves as a lever for other sectors of the economy, with far-reaching imperativeness aimed at economic, technological, and governmental growth. The unfortunate outbreak of Coronavirus in 2019 has had devastating effects on every sector of the economy, from which tertiary education is not exempted. E-learning naturally becomes an option in order to grapple with and cope with the changes occasioned by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study is an attempt to logically investigate the nature and dynamics of the challenges pursued by the adoption of the e-learning method as an avenue for coping with the enormous challenges associated with the effective delivery of tertiary education in emergencies. This is more expedient because e-learning has become a veritable tool for the global advancement of tertiary education. Mixed date method research was employed in the conduct of this research, and a sum of fourth (40) forms was distributed to the target audience, and the hypothesis was tested using chi-square. The findings of the study reveal that e-learning has aided the continuation of education amidst the SARS-19. The paper recommends that both stakeholders in the private and public education sectors of Nigeria should provide conducive e-learning facilities amidst and beyond covid -19 pandemic in Nigeria.
- ItemAn Impact Assessment of Insecurity on Nigeria’s Socio-political Development(Jigawa Journal of Politics (JJP), 2024-11-05) Ibrahim O. Salawu; Lambe Emmanuel OyewoleThe seemingly unabating wave of security challenges in Nigeria has taken its toll on the nation’s socio political and economic trajectory. The state was ordinarily created to ensure law and orderliness has been handicapped in the face of the waves of insecurity. The emergent scenario presents a contagious spread across the country. This paper assessed the impact of the increasing nature and patterns of insecurity in Nigeria by examining the trend of the spread and mutation of insecurity across the country. Therefore, the qualitative research method and the state fragility theory were employed to show the relationship between the nature of the state and the waves of insecurity. The paper identified lack of human capital development, economic downturn, fragile security architecture, growing political imbalance amongst the ethnic groups are some of the causes of the rising waves of insecurity. The paper concluded that the waves of insecurity is further exacerbated by unpatriotic elements seeking to criminalize and use insecurity as a medium for either gaining attention, profiteering or destruction. The paper therefore recommends that the growing uneven development and marginalization of some ethnic group must be tackled by the proper application of the federal character principles.

Kwara State government should procure more vehicles and trucks and ensure regular maintenance. Environmentalists should be given priority in the process of recruitment, selection and placement.
- ItemEXPLORING THE ROLE OF NEW MEDIA IN DEMOCRATIC CONSOLIDATION: PROSPECTS AND CHALLENGES(Social Sciences Research Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka Nigeria, 2016-01-15) Ibrahim O. SalawuThe complexity of Nigerian politics and its attendant weakness in social cohesion constitute a great clog to Nigeria’s socio political and economic development. The emergence of new media as hoisted on the internet and its ancillaries like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter etc with their quantum leap in information flow, has impacted greatly on the political landscape. This is bridging the hitherto wide information gap between government and the governed in Nigeria. This paper examines the theoretical basis for new media, using a reflective analytical method; it rationalizes the link between new media and the quest for democratic consolidation in terms of its growing utility for civic engagement in Nigeria’s fourth republic. The paper also examines the inherent challenges drawing from Nigeria’s experience. This is in addition to a critical foray into the dominant arguments amongst the major divides of the adherents of new media about its efficacy in ingraining democracy. It suggests a multi pronged approach for using new media to tackle the pervasive nature of poverty, the unbridled level of corruption in governance and the challenge of terrorism in the country. With these it is hoped that an atmosphere for a robust engagement between government, business sector and civil society entities can be engendered. This is with the ultimate aim of asserting its reverence as an indispensable effect for democratic consolidation globally and Nigeria in particular.
- ItemFrom ‘Prisons to Correctional Services’: Exploring Evidence Based Analysis of The Plight of Awaiting Trial Inmates in Kwara State, Nigeria(Journal of Governance, 2024-06-05) Ibrahim O. Salawu; Abubakar Sulaiman; Yushau AlfakoroInmates awaiting trial are individuals yet to be legally convicted of any crime but kept in police or correctional custody for ease of interrogation, among other reasons. This study, however, assessed the phenomenon of an increase awaiting trial inmates across correctional facilities in Nigeria, using Kwara State, Nigeria, as the study area. The study employed a survey research design with mixed data methods as methodology, in which primary data were sourced through semi-structured interviews and internet, journal, and website data as secondary data. Structural functionalism was the theoretical framework for the study. The population for the study consists of inmates awaiting trial, officials of the correctional service, police officers, and lawyers. The study revealed that an increase awaiting trial inmates has led to prison breaks, prison congestion, and an overstretch of physical infrastructure available for convicted inmates, among other challenges. The study recommended that ease and speedy judicial processes should be adhered to too; the building of special apartments for the housing of awaiting inmates’s trials should be encouraged; and budgetary allocation should be increased to components of the criminal justice system, among other recommendations.

- ItemPolitical Settlement Analysis of the Blight of Internally Displaced Persons in the Muslim World: Lessons from Nigeria(Intellectual Discourse, 2018-12-10) Ibrahim O. Salawu; Aluko Opeyemi IdowuThe menace of conflicts and natural disasters in different states of the world had spiralled into a global phenomenon of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). These are groups of humans who had helplessly drifted away from their natural and ancestral home due to conflicts and disasters but had not crossed international boundaries into another country. They merely take solace by the protection offered by the spirit and letters of relevant international laws which have domesticated by member states. This paper seeks to answer the question regarding the extent to which the IDPs have become a menace in Nigeria. The paper reveals that many governments’ actions are the primary and the root cause of the IDPs while others are recipient of the domino effect. The paper relies on a panel data elicited from thirteen out of the thirty six states in Nigeria. The paper reveals the need for urgent measures by government to douse the upsurge in the number of IDPs. The political settlement analysis was used to proffer a better way of culminating the crises. Recommendations are directed to the individuals, civil societies and the government at all levels.

- ItemREVIEWING NIGERIA’S STAKE AND THE STRATEGIC IMPLICATION OF MOROCCO’S PROPOSED MEMBERSHIP OF THE ECOWAS(Studies in Politics and Society, 2019-12-05) Ibrahim O. SalawuInternational relations remain one of the surviving platforms for negotiation, consent, exploitation and domination of nations by nation. Cooperation and integration are two of the mechanisms used in the articulation of regional arrangements. The Kingdom of Morocco, a Maghreb nation in North Africa’s bid for ECOWAS membership has attracted recurrent intellectual engagements by the ECOWAS member states and the academia. This study relies on qualitative research methods of data collection and analysis. The respondents were purposively selected based on their cognate experience and practice of the international relation and regional organizations. The Critical theory was used to gird the study, this allows the researcher to critically examine data collected from publications and triangulation which resulted in the discovery of the following: Regionalism is a complex phenomenon that may not be easily captured in one international relations theory; Regional arrangement of ECOWAS is threatened by external ‘interests’ like that of Morocco-ECOWAS membership. That given the antecedent of Morocco in the Maghreb Union, her interests in ECOWAS might be beyond economic alliance and there is still much to know about Morocco’s intentions. Therefore, the study recommended among others that Nigeria and other West African states should go back to the drawing board to re-examine their position on Morocco’s ECOWAS membership. Furthermore, ECOWAS members, especially Nigeria should guide her strategic position in ECOWAS by diplomatically weighing the short term and the long-term benefits of allowing Morocco to become ECOWAS member.
- ItemTHE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DEFECTION AND ELECTORAL OUTCOME IN SOUTHWESTERN NIGERIA: AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS(Yamtara-Wala Journal of Arts, Management and Social Sciences, 2024-06-01) Abdulrauf Ambali; Ibrahim O. Salawu; Moshood A. OlatunjiThe way and manner politicians in Nigeria defect from one political party to the other has not only constituted democratic nuisance, but has continued to raise serious concern among political observers and participants and this has been attributed to lack of clear ideology which makes candidates defect from one political party to the other which may affect the outcomes of elections in Southwestern, Nigeria. Using content analysis of secondary data obtained from various available literature and documentary evidences, and descriptive analysis of primary data obtained through the administration of questionnaire on purposively selected respondents, this study critically explored the linkage between defection and electoral outcome in Southwestern Nigeria. The study found out that politicians’ defection from one political party to another affect electoral outcomes in Southwestern, Nigeria. Specifically, the result of the findings revealed that the weighted average mean was obtained as 3.14 indicating strong agreement of respondents to the negative impact of defection on electoral outcomes. It is concluded that strong connection exists between political ideology and defection and this have effect on electoral outcome. It is our candid opinion that for the purpose of deepening the practice of democracy in Nigeria, any elected politician that defects to another party should be made to stand down and seek re-election. The loophole within Nigeria electoral system that allows this to happen must be changed. That is, a legal reform to affect some enactments, particularly in the constitution whereby machinery for the vacation of seat after defection will make the occupier to lose the seat.
