(Department of Performing Arts, University of Ilorin, 2021-07-12) Gambari-Olufadi l, K.; Gobir, M.T.
The Covid-19 pandemic has generated a lot of reactions from Nigerians home and abroad both before and after the lockdown. These reactions are encapsulated in the linguistic choices of Tweeter users. The thrustnof this study was the examination of selected Covid-19 tweets through the adoption of a discursive pragmatic approach. The data forbthe study were selected purposively and randomly: and analysed using Agenda Setting Theory of McCombs and Shaw (1972).

A sociolinguistic study of interpersonal stance in selected Tweets on COVID-19 pandemic
(Journal of the English Scholars Association of Nigeria, 2022-12-28) Gobir, M.T.
The global pandemic, COVID-19, has been the central theme of most discourses including the social media discourse. Nigerians, like all other nationals have expressed their opinions in diverse manners regarding this menace. It is against this backdrop that this study investigates interpersonal stance in selected tweets on the COVID-19 pandemic from a sociolinguistic perspective. Using a purposive sampling method, five tweets were selected from the twitter commentaries during lockdown period. These tweets were examined through an adaptation of the analytical tools of Hyland's (2005) Stance Theory of attitudinal evaluation. The findings from the study show that rhetorical devices such as metaphor, simile, nouns and analogy were deployed in the tweets to stir the emotions of readers, create humour, and lessen the impact of the pandemic on the people. The paper concludes that tweets are not just multimedia resources found on the social media; they have meaningful connotations, they are weapons which the oppressed use to fight their oppressors in a social setting where moral decadence has become the order of the day.

A study of proverbs and gender perspectives in Olu Obafemi’s Pestle on the Mortar
(National Theatre, Alpha Crowns Publishing Limited and Department of English, University of Ilorin, 2021-08-18) Gobir, M.T.; Zakariyah, M.
Proverbs are brief, precise or succinct expressions of wisdom that are fixed in both structure and meaning, often memorable and passed down from one generation to another. are a very special way of passing an important message particularly in a serious dialogue because of their general acceptability in a speech community where they are used. Proverbs are societal based and context dependent for their moral import or didactic value to be realised. Although, the same proverbs can be found in as many cultures and, they are mostly used to emphasise the core-cultural values in a particular society, hence their special connection with culture. It is in view of this that this study examines Olu Obafemi’s Pestle on the Mortar from a sociolinguistic perspective through the lens of Accommodation Theory.

An interactional sociolinguistic approach to the analysis of selected Pidgin-based buyer-seller exchanges
(Department of Languages Linguistics, Federal University, Dutsin-ma, 2021-08-15) Gobir, M.T.
The genre of social interactions determines the linguistic characteristics of interlocutors. Pidgin English is generally regarded as a code meant for informal discourse. Despite the informality of this code, it has formal structures. Hence, the aim of this study was to examine selected Pidgin-based exchanges from a sociolinguistic perspective. Using the survey method and the purposive sampling technique, ten exchanges were selected from buyer-seller interactions. The exchanges were recorded and transcribed for ease of analysis. The data were analysed based on Tannen (2005) and Beiley’s (2015) perspectives on Interactional Sociolinguistics approach. The analysis of the data revealed that impoliteness is not only associated with buyers, it also characterises the language of sellers with the influence of cognitive factors such as motivation and state of mind. Apart from this, it has been found that the economic status of sellers in terms of affluence does not guarantee their superiority over those of the buyers in the studied context. In conclusion, even though Pidgin English is contextually an informal code, it has f

An interlanguage phonological approach to the analysis of selected Ghanaian newscasters' renditions
(African- British Journals, 2022-02-10) Adwoa, V.D.; Gobir, M.T.
In recent years, specially marked varieties of the English language have been the thrust of many researches, and the Ghanaian English is one of them. This study examined selected Ghanaian newscasters’ renditions using the tenets of Selinker’s Interlanguage Phonology Theory: simplification, overgeneralisation of the L2 and transfer. The study also incorporated the use of Praat application for the analysis of the data. Apart from this, the interview method was used to collect the data for the study. The data collected consist of interviews recorded across twelve radio stations in Cape-Coast, Ghana. The data analysis revealed that some phonemes of the British English (BrE) are unavailable in the Ghanaian English; hence, the newscasters introduce or transfer some of the phonemic features that are characteristics of the individual's variety into the British English (BrE), especially those with similar phonemic properties. Also, phonological simplification processes were introduced by the respondents to enable them to produce words easily and as a result, the words and syllables end up reduced, restructured or re-syllabified. In conclusion, the findings from the study have reflected that there are modifications by the studied speakers and these modifications are what make the English language spoken by the newscasters distinct from what is obtainable on the job, due to the exigencies of the second language situation and specific cognitive oriented problems.

English Speech Variation among Students of Kwara State University, Malete
(Department of French, University of Cape Coast and Department of French, University of Ilorin, 2020-08-15) Alabi, T. A.; Gobir, M.T.
The evidence and establishment of the national variety of English, Nigerian English, have therefore rendered the RP which is the standard spoken variety invaluable in the Nigerian environment. It is most appropriate to carry out proficiency evaluation based on what is obtainable as the standard in our immediate environment rather than looking outward to proffer solutions to internal linguistic problems. The foregoing assumptions and scholarly propositions triggered the researcher‘s interest to embark on a study of the speech patterns of selected undergraduate students to investigate and verify whether undergraduate students are representatives of proficiency in the Popular Nigerian English continuum based on their educational exposure; all in a bid to examine the implication of Popular Nigerian English on language pedagogy.
