- ItemA SURVEY OF PROBLEMS HINDERING THE OPERATION OF OPEN UNIVERSITY SYSTEM IN OYO AND KWARA STATES, NIGERIA(Academic Research International, 2011) Olayiwola Olorisade; Afolabi S.O.; Abdulkareem A.Y.National Open University which was formally established in Nigeria by Act 25 of 1983 aimed at bridging the existing gap between the education of male and female, able and disabled, young and old. and nomads in the society. This study focused on problems facing the National Open University in Nigeria as perceived by facilitators and students in Kwara and Oyo States Stratified random sampling method was used to select 40 facilitators and 50 students from Kwara and Oyo State study centers A researchers' designed questionnaire was used for data collection It was validated and its reliability co- efficient, determined through test-retest method, was found to be 0.76. Two research questions were answered and two research hypotheses were tested using percentage and chi-square statistics respectively. The findings of the study revealed lack of standard classroom, inadequate supply of electricity and inadequate funding The study also showed that there is no significant difference between facilitators and students' perception of the problems associated with resource allocation and organization of the programme It was therefore, recommended among others that course materials, computer-based media and other facilities should be made available at all study centers for students use. Also, adequate funding and uninterrupted academic calendar of the University should be ensured while internet services should be provided at all study centers

- ItemEnhancing Students' Work Experience Through the Engagement of Small and Medium Enterprises(Journal of Arts, Science and Technology, 2022) Olayiwola Olorisade; Afolabi S.O.This paper unveiled the major challenges being faced by Nigerian students during their engagement in Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES). It explores a better way of improving students' engagement in the Work Experience Scheme by involving small and medium enterprises to provide entrepreneurial exposure and business mentorship. Although the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) has offered many Nigerian students the required exposure to practical work experience, some have not benefited from it. Some of the reasons for this include the increased student population in Nigerian tertiary institutions, the inability of industries to absorb all students due to limited spaces, and the inability to pay the required stipend. Other problems include the wrong placement of students for the exercise. This paper proffered strategies for providing a more robust programme of engagement that would promote entrepreneurial spirit and skills required by students to establish personal ventures and succeed at it at the end of their academic pursuit. The programme will provide opportunities to capture all that the students are required to go for SIWES in a more appropriate setting and provide rich collaboration between Small and Medium Enterprises (SME'S) and educational institutions in Nigeria.
- ItemPoverty Alleviation Of Teachers As A Tool For Implementing Basic Education Scheme In Nigeria(Nigerian Journal of Educational Administration and Planning, 2008) Olayiwola Olorisade; Afolabi S.O.For any policy on education to achieve its basic objective, attention must be paid to teachers' welfare since no education can rise above the quality of its teacher. The crux of this paper is how teacher poverty can be alleviated with a view to achieving Universal Basic Education in Nigeria. The paper unveiled the poverty status of teachers in Nigeria and some West African countries. It equally showed that the poverty status of the teachers is manifested in the continued struggle for a better condition of service over the years. However, the paper considered the roles been played by National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategies (NEEDS) and Millennium Development Goals (MDGS) which are United Nation's initiative in the year 2000. T-test statistics was used to determine the earning differential of ten randomly selected teachers with Ph.D and medical doctors in Kwara State. The paper, therefore, suggested strict adherence to UNESCO Standard of fixing teachers' salaries and allowances, Parity in salary structure of teachers at all level of education and across all professions depending on qualification possessed, periodic review of teachers' salaries and establishment of a new national teachers taskforce.
- ItemRelationship between Universal Basic Education Training and Teachers' Quality in Public Primary Schools in Nigeria(International Journal of Social Science & Education, 2012) Olayiwola Olorisade; Afolabi S.O.The study is a correlation study that unveiled the relationship between UBE training and teachers’ quality in, Nigerian Public primary schools using Kwara State as a case study. It was the State that championed education reform in the country. All the 24 members of State School Improvement Team (SSIT) and 50 members of Quality Assurance Bureau (QAB) constituted by the Kwara State Government were used as samples.. The Questionnaire tagged UBE Training and Teachers Quality Questionnaire (UTTQ) was used. Three (3) research hypotheses raised were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation and chi-square statistics. The findings of the study were: that there was a significant relationship between SUBEB training workshop and teachers’ quality; a significant relationship between training resources and quality of workshop training organized by State Universal Education Board (SUBEB), but there was no significant difference between the perceptions of SSIT and QAB on teachers’ quality in Kwara State. However, the programme was not without its attendant challenges which include: delayed and inadequate supply of the training materials and poor remuneration of the trainers and trainees. It was suggested that more funds should be committed to the training programme, training materials supplied promptly and adequately. Indeed, training and re-training of teachers is a sine qua non for quality teaching in schools.

- ItemTowards enhancing managerial skills for improved students' academic performances for national development(Kwara State University, Malete, 2013) Olayiwola Olorisade; Afolabi S.O.This study investigated the relationship between managerial skills (technical, conceptual and interpersonal) of institutional managers and students academic performances in Nigerian Colleges of Education. The research is a follow-up to an earlier one that considered other types of skills and its effect on organizational effectiveness. The study sample consisted of 461 academic staff, from nine Colleges of Education in Nigeria. Managerial Skills, Staff Morale and Work Effectiveness Questionnaire was the basic instrument used. Simple percentages and Pearson Product Moment Correlation statistics were used to test the questions and hypotheses. The study revealed a significant relationship between the technical and conceptual skills with students' academic performance; while there was no significant relationship between interpersonal skills and students' academic performance. Based on the findings, it was recommended that institutional managers should get more engaged with classroom teaching, to use and improve on their technical skills. They should involve staff in policy formulation, decision making, and goal setting to prepare efficient successors to manage the institutions, for improved students' academic performances. Institutional staff should also be exposed to leadership training, to acquire competencies in managerial skills in the bid to enhance institutional performances.
