- ItemEmbedded Topical Themes in Nigerian Movies and Their Influence on National Identity(Elegbakna Journal of Theatre and Film Studies, vol.3. Department of Theatre and Film Studies, Rivers State University, 2025-02) Joe Odedina and Musiliyu S. SanniThis essay examines the various embedded topical themes within Nigerian cinema, focusing on their cultural significance and the ways they reflect national identity. Through a critical lens, this analysis will highlight how these themes not only entertain but also serve as a medium for conveying important messages about identity, tradition, and culture in contemporary Nigerian society. The objectives of this study include identifying key topical themes, analyzing their representation in films, and finding out if there is a nexus between the themes and national identity. The methodology involves a qualitative analysis of selected Nigerian films and drawing from both academic literatures. The theoretical framework applied to prosecute this work is realism theory by Sigfried Kracauer. Realism is at the core of embedded topical theme in films, because the particular theme must have been an issue within the society and any radical deviation would make the topical theme unrecognizable. Some of the topical themes identified in the three selected movies are, theme of rotational kingship and criminality, theme of oral tradition and language co-mixing and theme of music and dance, including costumes and objects. It also found that these topical themes have a direct nexus with the Nigerian national identity. The study concludes that innovative storytelling techniques with the use of embedded topical themes not only reflect the complexities of Nigerian life but also challenge preconceived notions about its national identity.
