- ItemAesthetic of Choreographic Stunts in the Nigerian Nollywood(Cognizance Journal of Multidisciplinary Studies Vol5 No1. 2025. A Open Accessible, Multidisciplinary, Fully Refereed and Peer Reviewed Journal., 2025-02) Joe OdedinaThe Nigerian Nollywood has validated itself through the recent ranking by placing second to Bollywood of India and third to Hollywood of America in its popularity positioning. This acceptance is as a result of its rich content, treatment of social vices and the celebration of Nigeria‟s multi-plurality. However, most of the films are bereft of rich choreographic stunts. Indeed, choreographic stunts are seen as ingeniously deployed creative additions that spice up the overall aesthetics of film. Consequently, the study examines the aesthetic of choreographic stunts in the Nigerian Nollywood through the theoretical framework of realism as propounded by Siegfried Kracauer complimented with content analysis of five purposively selected films out of a sample population of fifteen. The aim was to spur Nigerian filmmakers into a more quality production in action scenes, while the objectives were to find out if this lacuna is caused by lack of stunt coordinators in Nollywood and if it has stunted the industry. In this line, the research adopted the causal-comparative methodology analysis to review existing data and some popular Nollywood thriller movies. It also explored an interview with one of Nollywood‟s actor/producer. The findings were that this vacuity resulted from insufficient professional trained stunt choreographers and low budget allocation to stunt performance which excludes the genre from audience with action interest worldwide. The article concludes that the void needs urgent intervention and suggests that stunt coordinator department be a standard part of Nollywood crew.
- ItemImpact of sub-textual factors in the narratives of selected Nollywood films(Dept. of English Faculty of Arts, University of Yaounde, Yaoundé, Cameroon, 2020-05) Joe OdedinaFilm is one of the significant avenues to examine and explore the foibles of man in a self deprecating manner without any morass of culpability. In film, whether it is the morbid fascination we see in the death of an antagonist, or the excitement generated by the sexual exploration of couples, once the lights are turned on and the credits roll, all our voyeuristic pleasures and thrills are over. No guilt, no remorse, no consequence. In Nigerian cinema space, however, there is a need for vigorous study of embedded ideology and cultural nuances that has made Nollywood films popular. This study, therefore, examined selected Nollywood films, with the objective of appraising the sub-textual factors that influence the narratives of Nigerian movies. In this process, the study adopted ideological analysis method to interrogate three randomly selected films. The findings were that improvisation, code-mixing and paralinguistic aesthetics are factors that impact Nollywood films. It concluded that some ideological and cultural derivatives within the framework of these films laid emphasis on oral tradition that leads to improvisation, colonial experience which results in code mixing and dramatic gestures culminating in paralinguistic aesthetics which makes them popular. The study therefore, suggests that some of these abstruse sub-textual factors within Nigerian cultural ideologies of Nollywood narratives are appreciated by the audience and encourage producers to continue reinforcing positive ones in their films.
- ItemIntroverted gaze at Nollywood as a means of escapism for African audience(Nasarawa State University, Keffi Journal of Theatre & Cultural Studies (JOCTUS), 2023-07) Joe OdedinaHistory of cinema in Africa is blighted with conscious duplicity by Europeans who used its introduction to the continent in early twentieth century to manipulate and control the native populace through distorted narratives. However, the popularity of Nollywood productions within the continent is presently changing some of that chronicles positively. The aim of this study was to explore how Nollywood movies have become a source of escapist entertainment for African audience whose needs for enjoyment draw them to gaze at its unique contents. The study did a content analysis review of the three most popular Nollywood films in Nigeria as observed through the Netflix platform for Nigerian subscribers in October 2020, to see why these films were embraced by Nigerian audience specifically and African audience in general. It was found that the content of the most popular Nollywood films represent the ways of life and aspirations of Africans, while competing European movies were not easily compatible with African narratives. The study concluded that although Nollywood movies have been incorporated by African audience, the technology required to tap into this abundant indigenous entertainment mode is limited to major African cities at expensive costs. This study has exposed the disparity between abundant entertainment availability and the sparse means with which to enjoy it. Government is advised to revamp its technological infrastructures to unclog the bottleneck that strains the potential developmental strides in entertainment through which income revenues could accrue to citizens and state.
- ItemLanguage Utility in the Production Process of Yorùbá Films(Department of English, Faculty of Arts, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, 2019-10) Joe OdedinaThe working dynamics of language in the production process of any movie cannot be underestimated. This is because language, in the form of dialogue gives meaning to the action seen on the screen. Without dialogue, the dramatic action of a film becomes meaningless or at the very least, difficult to understand. This paper examines the application of Yorùbá language in the production of Yorùbá films to find out whether the choice of Yorùbá language for these films is conscious and beneficial to the filmmakers, as well as ascertain the relationship of Yorùbá language to Yorùbá films. To do this, the paper employed a review method of selected literatures and movies in the selected areas with data analysis. The findings were that producers of Yorùbá films consciously use Yorùbá language in their work. The benefit of doing this is the popularity of the language and the wide audience base existing since the days of the Yorùbá Travelling Theatre Troupes. The relationship of Yorùbá language to Yorùbá films has therefore, become mutually beneficial to each other. The study also reveals that there is disconnect between the popularity of home video release and cinema box office. It therefore, concludes that concerted efforts need to be made to bridge this gap and suggest producers upgrade their production aesthetics to compete with foreign produced films that dominate the cinema box office. This will translate to commercial success for the producers and avail them better production values.
- ItemMutation of piracy and its effect on Nollywood.(NTAtv Journal of Communication, 2019) Joe OdedinaThe menace of piracy has been a recurring decimal in the Nigerian entertainment industry for a very long time. Although the illegal business of piracy is an encompassing thriving criminal enterprise that includes books, journals, movies, music and software, all of which have been examined in the past, the focus of this study is mainly the effect of mutation of piracy on Nollywood movies. This study examined the cause of piracy and its effects on Nollywood movies. The study adopted a historical analysis method to interrogate this work, as well as interviews of some industry personalities. Before the new millennia, piracy involved coming in physical contact with the work to be pirated. However, in this twenty-first century period, the development of new technology has made the theft of intellectual property a ubiquitous and safe enterprise. Consequently, the requirement of obtaining a copy before engaging in the illicit business has also been completely eliminated thereby making piracy more difficult to detect, let alone prevent. The findings are that the main cause of piracy is profiteering. Other unintended consequence is the economic loss to the original inventor and producer, which has a deteriorating effect on further production of such work. The study concludes that the law in the books that protect copyright owners should be reinforced and strictly enforced to discourage piracy violators and give confidence to film producers who want to commit their resources into legitimate production.
- ItemNollywood and the Burden of Postcolonial Heritage on Selected Nigeria Films(The Performer: Ilorin Journal of the Performing Arts, University of Ilorin, Ilorin Nigeria, 2018) Joe OdedinaNollywood film industry has received many accolades in the last few years. This has popularised Nigerian cultural entertainment around the world. However, Nigerian cinema was not designed to be a cultural channel at inception, but instead, as a tool of colonial propaganda. It is the burden of this postcolonial heritage that our paper intends to explore, as it examines the negative influence of colonial history on Nollywood. The paper employs an analytical method of research. By this, the study reviews some earliest Nigerian films among which are Ti Oluwa Ni Ile, The figurine and Living in Bondage and realise that the burden of postcolonial heritage on Nigerian cinema is pervasive and corrosive. Based on the above approach, our findings reveal that Nollywood’s portrayal of young, upwardly mobile and selfish characters who sacrificed their families, communities and country to get rich and become wealthy is a burden inherited from the days of colonial cinema. Nevertheless, regardless of the ubiquitous corruption in these Nollywood films, this paper concludes that there is no better medium to expose and rectify the negative impact of postcolonial influence on Nigeria cinema, other than Nollywood films. This is accomplished through Nollywood’s concerted efforts at revamping its socio-cultural messages for collective development. It therefore, recommends Nollywood writers and producers use topical themes of positive role model characters to alleviate the burden.
- ItemOnline Streaming: A Paradigm Shift for Nollywood Movie Distribution(Department of Communication Studies, Faculty of Arts, College of Humanities and Legal Studies, University of Cape Coast,Ghana, 2024) Joe OdedinaThe Nigerian movie distribution and exhibition business has undergone major transformation in the last few years due to technological innovation. The study is about Nollywood paradigm shift from hard copy movie distribution to online streaming services. The aim is to ascertain why producers are moving to soft screening through online pay-to-view platforms. The objectives were to find out if this new trend is financially beneficial to the producers and whether it will likely continue in the future. The study adopted qualitative methods to interrogate existing data on some of the most popular Nollywood films released online by Netflix. This is based on a snap-shotofNetflix’spopularitychartinthemonthof October, 2020 and news of cinema theatre films release around the same period. The findings are that the online distribution deals must have been profitable for the producers, judging by repeated use by some of them and others enlisting in the business. The expanding scope of Nollywood producers using these online streaming platforms for distributions of their work suggests the likelihood of a continuing process. The study concludes that this is a mutually beneficial relationship between local producers and online business global entities. It, therefore, recommends that Nollywood producers avoid signing exclusive deals with online distributors only. This will allow home-grown cinema theatres to be financially rewarding to prevent the nation’s cinema theatre chains from collapsing due to redundancy.
- ItemPattern of production elements and aesthetics in some Nollywood films(The Crab Journal of theatre and media Arts, Department of Theatre and Film Studies, University of Port Harcourt, Rivers state., 2019-06) Joe OdedinaFilm is one of the most important communication tools that spur the development of the human race. The reason for this is because of its power to critically evaluate the follies of man through the illusion of moving images. In the Nigerian cinema scholarship, however, the need to carry out a thorough study on the production elements and aesthetics of the content of Nollywood films is critical. The objectives of this study are to evaluate the pattern of production elements in some Nollywood films, examine the aesthetic values in the content of these films and observe the use of spectacle in the films. The paper adopted textual analysis method to interrogate three Nollywood films, with a view to ascertain the creative use of production elements that generate aesthetic values for the films. These elements were observed to enhance the aesthetic content of some Nollywood video films. The study concludes that Nollywood film emphasises the use of colourful costumes and beautiful decors to enhance the aesthetic value in the pattern of production elements of its films.
- ItemThe Economic Development of Yorùbá Video Films(Alore Journal: Ilorin Journal of the Humanities, 2020-09) Joe OdedinaThe video film industry in Nigeria has grown exponentially in the last decade to rave reviews and popularity. However, the economic development of Yorùbá video films is usually aggregated with the English speaking (Nollywood) video films by several scholars. This superficial approach creates a need to critically evaluate the Yorùbá video films to find why it is flourishing. This study, therefore, examined the themes and plotlines of three randomly selected Yorùbá films. The objectives were to ascertain factors responsible for its growth to determine if the Yorùbá cultural expositions in these films have contributed to their popularity and economic development; and establish whether or not the transition from the celluloid production to video has benefited the development of Yorùbá films. The study employed a descriptive method of historical and narrative analysis to interrogate this development and adopts Siegfried Kracaur’s (1974) realism theory as framework. The findings were that the factors responsible for the growth of Yorùbá video films are socio-political and economic imperatives associated with these films. The study concluded that the Yorùbá cultural exposition of music, song, dance and costumes exhibited in these films have made them popular with the audience, thereby sustaining the growth and development of the films. The transformation from celluloid to video films has impacted positively the industry in the form of economic growth and employment creation, while at the same time it has exposed some challenges in the aesthetic content of the films.
