- ItemA Study of Postmodern Ideology in the Drama of Selected Nigerian Playwrights(Islamic University Multidisciplinary Journal, Uganda, 2018) Adebisi, Basiru Adeyemi; Emmanuel-Olowonubi, O.The banality of postmodern drama has given rise to the dynamic level of creativity in dramatic composition, transposition and experimentations of various issues in the society. The approach to such issues abhors not the pretentious manners of modern approach as dramatist deliberately infuses actor's consciousness to live within and outside the dramatisations of drama. This paper therefore studies postmodern ideology in selected works of two Nigerian Playwrights. Through contents analysis methods of research, the study explores various elements of postmodernism within the socio-political reality of Nigeria. It that the term" postmodernism involves a radical re-thinking of representational strategies, and with this, a question of our underlying assumptions about how" meanings” are produced especially as against the emotional drench of classical and modern dramas.
- ItemCultural Significance of Performance Space in Traditional Yoruba Film: A Study of Mustapha Jayeola’s Obara Meji(GUU; Journal of Humanities: A Publication of College of Humanities Gregory University, Uturu, 2025) Adebisi, Basiru AdeyemiExploring the core essence of performance space beyond artistry, especially from the Yoruba cosmology has not received adequate attention in film making process; whereas, performance space is a thematic determinant of film production for pragmatic purposes. This paper therefore, examines the cultural significance of performance space in Mustapha Jayeola’s Obara Meji. Through content analysis and descriptive method with Sunday Enesi Ododo’s Techno-Cultural Performance Theory (2012), this paper explores the classification of performance space within the cultural affiliation of Yoruba cosmology, carefully classifying the performance spaces in the film as sacred and secular in its exterior and interior settings. Spaces such as Igbo-oro (evil forest), agbala (Balogun’s courtyard), witches’ coven and Torera’s redemptive room are sacredly significant to Yoruba cultural spirituality; while King’s courtyard, riverside and forest spaces are secular but complementary to the cultural ecosystem of Yoruba environment. The Yoruba film Obara Meji exemplifies the deep cultural significance of performance space in Yoruba tradition, serving as a medium for storytelling, spiritual expression, and social commentary. The paper concludes that spatial dynamics of Obara Meji not only provides authenticity to its themes but also demonstrates how Yoruba performance space traditions remains relevant in contemporary visual storytelling. It is recommended that more attempt should be made by story writers, set designers, directors and critical stakeholders in production process to be deliberate in aligning cultural significance of Yoruba culture to specific performance space for cultural education.
- ItemPerformance of Morality in Islamic Song: A study of Abdulazeez Abiodun (Saoty Arewa)'s Kini Akoko(Elegbakna: Journal of Theatre and Film Studies, Department of Theatre and Film Studies, Rivers State University., 2025) Adebisi, Basiru Adeyemi; Ganiyu, ShukuratIslamic music and musicians have been the subject of serious criticism by Islamic scholars with subtle and strong condemnation of the art for lack of morality. However, this study explores the significant role of Islamic songs in moral teaching. It addresses the physical and spiritual needs of Muslim Ummah particularly in upholding discipline, morality, and ethics in a religious-cultural society. Kini Akoko by Alhaji Saoty Arewa is examined through content analysis and descriptive methods with the adoption of Adedeji's Transformative Music Theory (2006) as the Theoretical Framework. It is among other findings that Islamic songs perform reformative and educative roles as portrayed in Kini Akoko, which places a premium on chastity among young girls and the destructive effects of fornication in society. It is revealed that negligence has contributed to moral decadence in society. The study concludes that Islamic songs have moral functions in society not only for the Muslims but for building general family ethics and values within the Yoruba-African society. As a universal language and uniting force to all classes of people, the importance of music in promoting moral values and social change should (rather than condemning) be recognised and celebrated through awards, festivals, and other events especially when it is designed with cultural sensibility or affiliations like Kini Akoko, Islamic songs as a transformative tool for promoting moral values and combating moral decadence should be explored rather than condemning the art, particularly in modern society. - ItemStudy of Domestic Injustices and Solutions to Marital Unfaithfulness in Selected Nollywood Films of Yoruba Expression(EDE: Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2021-01-19) Adelowo, Adedoyin Folashade; Adebisi, Basiru AdeyemiThis paper, understudies the degree of marital unfaithfulness and domestic injustices meted out against women by men in Olanrewaju Abiodun’s Awa Okunrin, written by Funke Akindele and produced by Gbadebo Osunmo, and Taiwo Aromokun’s Si Gbogbo Okunrin respectively. Through descriptive and content analysis methods, it is discovered that the degree of psychological, physical and emotional trauma womenfolk is subjected to prompts few ladies to challenge the menace of violence against the female gender by adopting self-defense stance. The paper argues that the ten commandments in Taiwo Aromokun’s Si Gbogbo Okunrin serve as golden rule for reasonable men. The Commandments are issued to save women from seemingly unending marital injustices. Although the process seems violent in nature, yet it becomes a workable and sustainable antidote to stopping marital infidelity. While we agree that the employment of gun (force) to instill decorum into the men’s senses is violent in nature, it is our conclusive belief that nothing good comes easy. All concerned stakeholders especially those that cater for women's rights in the socio-political space, should register as women police outfit with appropriate authorities to enable them to protect the rights of women, challenge the chauvinism of male dishonesty and disband women from matrimonial prisons. - ItemTechnical Aids in Òpélé-Ìbà Masquerade Festival of Òsogbo Osun State(EDE: Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2020-07-22) Adebisi, Basiru AdeyemiThis paper x-rays the philosophical, cultural and socio-spiritual aesthetics of technical aids in Òpélé-Ìbà masquerade festival performance of Òsogbo in Ò̩ sun State, Nigeria. The study adopts the participant-observation and descriptive research methods within the purview of Sunday Enesi Ododo's Techno-Cultural Performance Theory. It has come to the fore in this study that, although masquerade tradition is a common phenomenon to Yorùbá people yet the historical evolutions are different from lineage to lineage even in the same cultural set-up. Apart from visual glamour, technical aids such as costumes, makeup, props, and others are cogent and subsequently codified and godified by the family. The non-ritual nature of technical aids equally goes beyond mere embellishments glamour to promote the economy of the family through the artistic expression of the masquerade. Also, the design patterns of the technical aids supply more than cultural aesthetics pleasure, but equally portray high degree of social belief of the people during celebration. The paper argues that the expressive nature of these aids fulfill the utilitarian nature of African performance arts especially masquerade festivals. It is, therefore, recommended that the potentials of these technical aids in the communication and aesthetic process of the festival can be explored by making the costumes more attractive to enhance its entertainment gait. Also, the utilisation of space can attract creative input by designing a special raised platform for the masquerade to perform.

Through the descriptive research method with the instrument of participant-observation, the performance stance of the technical elements are interrogated within theoretical framework of Sunday Enesi Ododo’s Techno-Cultural Performance Theory (2012). The paper concludes that these visual objects of aesthetics are not just performance indicators but greatly becomes operational both as separate entities and with performers especially in traditional African theatre context.
