Abstract
Non-Governmental Organizations have played commendable roles in the economic, political
and social development of Nigeria. It is important to note that poor performance of
governments in meeting the socioeconomic quests of its citizens has been identified as one of
the reasons behind the proliferation of Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and Non
Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in the present Millennium. It is against this background
that the study assessed the role of Mayo-Belwa Development Association (i.e. a Local NGO)
in economic development. The data for the study was collected through interview
complemented by secondary sources which was analysed through thematic analysis with the
help of tables and charts via excel package of social sciences. The study found out that the
selected CBO (Mayo-Belwa Development Association) played positive role towards the
community economic development of Mayo-Belwa community. It did not only ensure economic
development but socio-economic development of the community and Local Government at
large. The study recommended among others the need for community leaders to provide proper
support to Mayo-Belwa Development Association. This to a long way will better participation
of the beneficiaries and the need for Mayo-Belwa Development Association to be registered
with the state government for better support.
