Abstract
This study examined teacher participatory decision making and productivity in North Central private basic schools, Nigeria. The research design employed for the study was a descriptive survey research method design. The population of the study comprised of 31,566 teachers during the 2022/2023 academic session in all private junior secondary schools in North Central geo-political zone of Nigeria were considered as a suitable population for this study. A multistage sampling technique of stratified, proportionate and convenience sampling were was used to select 284 teachers in private schools from 3 States (FCT, Kwara and Niger States) in the zone as participants for this study from the target population. One main and four operational hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The Teacher Participatory Decision Making and Productivity Questionnaire (TPDMPQ) was tested for reliability using test-retest method while Spearman rank correlation coefficient statistics was used to analyze the data and test for hypotheses at 0.05 significance level. From the findings obtained in this study, it was revealed that positive relationship exists between participatory decision making and teachers’ productivity, teachers’ participation in curriculum management had the highest mean. However, teachers’ participation in decisions on school finance had the lowest mean and there is also no significance relationship between school plant maintenance and teachers’ productivity. This reveals that, less attention was given to teachers’ involvement and effective participation in decisions on maintenance of school plants and school finance. The study concludes that teachers’ participation in school policy implementation, maintenance of school plants, curriculum management and school finance all have important roles in improving teachers' productivity It was recommended that teachers should be actively involved in school policy planning and its implementation including formulation of rules and regulation, late arrival of students and disciplinary policies to improve teachers’ productivity and learning outcomes for students.
