Abstract
The study investigated the effect of pictorial display instructional strategy instructional strategy on the acquisition of English grammar by lower primary school pupils in Modakeke, Osun State. The study adopted the nonequivalent pre-test, post-test and control group quasi-experimental research design. The population for the study comprised all the 1050 lower primary school three pupils of English Language in Modakeke, Osun State. The sample for the study consisted of45 lower primary school three pupils in their two intact classes. A multi-stage sampling procedure was used to select the sample for the study. The two intact classes were randomly assigned to one experimental group (pictorial display instructional strategy) and one control group (conventional instructional strategy). One research instrument was used to collect data for this study which is English Grammar Achievement Test (EGAT). The EGAT was a self-designed instrument by the researcher to evaluate the upils’ acquisition of Englishgrammar in English Language in both experimental group and control group in the study area. Data collected were analysed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) analysis. Results of the study showed that there was significant effect of pictorial display instructional strategy on the acquisition of English grammar by lower primary school pupils in Modakeke, Osun State (F = 16.483; p < 0.05). Results of the study revealed that there was no significant effect of pictorial display instructional strategy on the acquisition of English grammar by lower primary school pupils based on gender in the study area (F = 1.322; p > 0.05).The study concluded that there was significant effect of pictorial display instructional strategy on the acquisition of English grammar by lower primary school pupils in Modakeke, Osun State.
