- ItemHematology and Serum Biochemical Indices of West African Dwarf Goats Fed Shea Nut Cake Multi-Nutrient Blocks as Supplements to Daniella oliveri Based Diet(Longdom publishing, 2022) Olayinka A. Ojo; Dupe OgunbosoyeGoats are hardy, with small body size, broad feeding habits and short reproductive cycle. However, dry season is usually accompanied by low forage growth and reduced nutrients therefore resulting into undergrazing and reduced performance. This study is evaluating the inclusion of shea nut cake multi-nutrient blocks compacted using three different binders; cassava flour, cement, industrial starch (T1, T2 and T3 respectively), as dry season supplement. Effects of this dietary inclusion were evaluated on the hematology and serum biochemical indices of the experimental goats. Result showed that the highest Red Blood Cell (RBC) value 17.73 ± 0.23 103/ul was recorded in T2, serum low density lipoprotein (LDL), Alanine amino transferase (ALT), Urea, were significantly lower assigned to treatment 2 as compared to the control. The values recorded for Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) ranged between 41.68 to 64.02, with experimental goats in treatment 3 having the lowest value. The bilirubin of goats (2.74 mg/dl) was observed to be significantly lowest in treatment 3 compared to the control value. The highest total protein (TP) (10.50 g/ dl) recorded in treatment 2 was significantly higher than the control and statistically similar to values obtained for treatment 3 (10.05 g/dl). The highest level of serum cholesterol (63.37 mg/dl) was found in T3, although all cholesterol values observed in this study falls within the normal physiological range. Industrial starch can be used as shea nut cake multi-nutrient block binder without adverse physiological effect on experimental animals
- ItemHERITABILITY AND REPEATABILITY ESTIMATES OF DOE AND LITTER TRAITS IN NIGERIA; DOMESTIC RABBIT(Wyamaba University of Sri lanka, 2018) Olayinka A. Ojo; Timothy .R. Fayeye; Ogunbiyi, B.This study was conducted to estimate genetic parameter of Doe and litter traits in a sub-population of Nigeria domestic rabbit. A total number 30 (thirty) rabbit (24 Does and 6 Bucks) were selected from a population of rabbits maintained at the rabbitry unit of the Teaching and Research Farm, Kogi State University, Anyigba. All the rabbits were housed in cages separately and fed ad libitum with pelleted rations. In the mating plan, four Does were selected at random and assigned to one Buck each; mating were mostly carried out in the morning and evening. The Doe to be mated were first weighed with a top loader weighing balance in order to know the initial weight of each doe before being carried for mating, the mating was observed and number of time mating took place. A total number of 75 kits were produced from the study. Data were taken on sire effects on litter size (LS), Number of Time Mated (NTM), Doe Weight (DW), Total mortality (TM) and Litter weight (1-4 weeks) and were statistically analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) appropriate for Completely Randomize Design. LS, NTM, TM were significant (P<0.05).DW was not significant (P<0.05), in terms of litter weight, LW1, LW2, LW4 showed significant (P<0.05) but LW3 was not significant. Repeatability and Heritability were estimated from the variance components, the Heritability estimates (± SE) for LS, NTM, DW TW, LW1, LW2, LW3 and LW4 varied generally from medium to high (0.04 to 0.60) and the Repeatability estimates (±SE) rangedfrom low to high (0.3 to 0.90). Individual selection of sire may lead to fast genetic progress in traits that shows high heritability and or repeatability such as litter weaning weight.

Ojo; Bolatito Adenike Shobo; Olufunso Emmanuel Akinboye; Osagie John Afodu; Oluwafunmike Omowunmi OyekaleBackground:Japanese quails are cheap and easy to maintain, and they have the potential to bridge the gap in animal protein consumption shortage; however, their performance is highly dependent on the efficiency of nutrient utilization. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the effect of an egg-lime-molasses mixture (ELM) administration on Japanese quails’ nutrient utilization and carcass parameters. Methods: The study was conducted at the poultry unit of the Babcock University farmhouse, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, Nigeria, from January to March 2022. ELM was prepared by placing fresh chicken eggs in a bowl, after which one liter of lime juice and 500 g of molasses were added and covered tightly for 10 days at 27 °C with a relative humidity of 61%. The solution was then blended. Two-hundred-day-old Japanese quails were assigned to one of five treatments in a completely randomized design. The birds were subdivided into four replicates of 10 birds each. The control (T1) had no administration of ELM; T2, T3, T4, and T5 had inclusion levels of 10, 20, 30, and 40 mL, respectively, all in 500 mL of water. Food and water were provided ad libitum. Data on performance characteristics, apparent digestibility coefficients, and carcass parameters were collected and analyzed using SPSS software, version 22 using descriptive statistics and analysis of variance. Results: The results revealed that ELM did not significantly affect performance characteristics and carcass parameters (P>0.05). The values for digestible crude protein were significantly higher (P<0.05) in the control (62.99%). However, the lowest values were observed among birds administered the lowest dosages (10 and 20 mL ELM with 56.36% and 54.38%, respectively). Birds administered the lowest dosages of ELM (10 mL) had significantly higher (P<0.05) digestible lipids (55.50%) and digestible ash (23.41%) values. The birds administered 20 mL ELM had significantly least (P<0.05) values for digestible lipids (25.50%) and digestible ash (2.58%), while significantly highest (P<0.05) values were observed for the same group of birds for digestible crude fiber (41.05%) and digestible carbohydrates (38.79%). Conclusion: The inclusion of ELM in the water of Japanese quails did not alter their growth performance or carcass parameters.
- ItemPROXIMATE STUDY, MINERAL AND ANTI-NUTRIENT COMPOSITION OF CYMBOPOGON CITRANUS LEAVES HARVESTED FROM ILORIN, NIGERIA: POTENTIAL BENEFITS IN ANIMAL NUTRITION AND HEALTH(Wayamba University, Sri Lanka, 2017) Olayinka A. OjoThe leaves of Cymbopogon citranus (Lemon grass) were harvested from Kwara State metropolis in Nigeria during the late rainy season in June 2015 for the proximate, mineral and phytochemical analysis .This study was conducted to know the nutritive value of lemongrass harvested and its potential in Animal Production and health. The standard procedures of AOAC (2003) were used to analyze the proximate composition and mineral analysis. The results of proximate analysis revealed the presence of high crude protein (8.51% ±0.06). The leaves also contained appreciable amounts of crude fibre (4.49% ±0.02), ash (8.02% ± 0.04), crude fat (2.99% ±0.02). The total ash content showed it contained minerals, Ca (0.62% ±0.00), K (1.59% ±0.01), Na (280.00±0.01), Fe (286.5±0.01), Mn (61.56±0.15), Zn (21.91±0.06) and P (30.15±0.00) parts per million (ppm). Magnesium (0.44% ±0.00) and copper (5.73±0.00) were the least. The results of phytochemical analysis and antinutrients showed presence of tannins (0.006% ±0.00), saponins (0.67% ±0.00), alkaloid (0.53%±0.00), steroids (0.001±0.00), phenols (0.07±0.00) and flavonoids (0.001±0.00). The presence of these essential nutrients and minerals showed that Lemon grass is a potential source of feed supplement to enhance maximum productivity and improve growth performance of livestock
